Weekly Wrap Up | 12/24/23

Aloha friends!

It is Christmas Eve and honestly, I’m ready for Christmas to be over. It’s fun, lots of fun for the kids but it’s so hectic and we had to go to the mall – or I should say shopping center in town it’s a big one – but it was my only chance to see a friend who was visiting and we needed to exchange gifts, plus my hubby had a dentist appointment next to the mall. The traffic was getting on my nerves, people were driving nuts, and I was so ready to go home once we got there. 😆

We are going to my parents house for Christmas lunch tomorrow so that should be easy and then it will be time for me to decide on what to do for my daughter’s birthday. I don’t know why I’m having such a hard time figuring out what I want to do for her- maybe because I’m tired?

Anyway how are you spending Christmas Eve? Did you get all your shopping done or are you a last minute shopper?

Okay this book has been on my radar for awhile and I saw good and bad reviews for it so I had to read it for myself.

+ It has very gothic, academia vibes to it which was nice and it was what I was expecting. Effy is an architect and takes on a project for the estate of one of her favorite writers, Emrys Myrddin. The estate is a fantastic gothic setting with tales about the Fairy King and the “drowning”, and the mystery about Myrddin and his writings. I like how Preston and Effy were investigating his writings.

+ Effy is a fascinating character and at times an unreliable one. She’s beautiful, all the men tell her so and they are drawn to her – she even got into a situation with her professor, which has caused her to be an outcast at school. She’s afraid of men because of what happened to her and she deals with a lot of misogyny. Her mother basically hates her – which is awful. She’s alone and needs help but doesn’t have anyone on her side until she meets Preston, who off the bat, she doesn’t like at all. Effy also has these nightmares about the Fairy King and takes sleeping pills so she is mysterious herself. The themes about misogyny and power imbalances are very present in this book though and there were a few quotes that hit home.

+ I did like Preston and Effy’s interactions because he’s this stuffy, uptight literary student. I think the most Effy has ever stood up to a guy was to Preston – she wasn’t afraid of him and he didn’t make her feel unsafe, which I liked about him. As for the chemistry between them – there is tension for sure, but I also felt at times they would have been great just been really good friends.

~ I think there was a lot going on in this book and I chose to stay focused on the Myrddin mystery – basically that’s the whole reason Preston and Effy are at the estate in the first place. There is a war also going on in the book and there is Effy’s nightmares about the Fairy King and I was confused at times if Effy was experiencing things with this Fairy King or it was all in her head.

~ At times the setting or I should say time period, was confusing. I know it’s basically an alternate Earth, countries names are all made up, and the world they live in kind of felt like the 1940’s-ish and I’m just going off of them smoking cigarettes and drinking hard liquor a lot. Effy also mentioned something like girls at school usually come away with a ring and engaged – so that sounds like to 1940’s or earlier to me. I enjoyed the setting but at times I felt like I was confused about certain things about this world.

My Final Thoughts:

I think I read this at the right time – the weather here has been rainy and the gothic setting of this book and the lyrical writing was perfect for my mood. It is a dark story dealing with misogyny, parental neglect, power imbalances and even grooming. I do think the world building at times was somewhat confusing or something was mentioned and not explained fully. The romance was a sweet spot in the story with Preston and Effy being a sort of rivals to lovers relationship. I thought Effy’s journey from being alone to finally having someone in her corner and being kind to her without wanting anything in return was amazing for her. If you like lyrical prose and a gothic setting, you’ll like this one.

Looking Back on 2023: New to Me Authors

I saw a Blogmas post on the blog Bookish in Bed where she did a feature of new to her authors this year. I wanted to do a similar post and look back on my year of 2023 and see which new authors I took a chance on this year!

New to Me Authors in 2023

Rachel Gillig – One Dark Window and Two Twisted Crowns – I read both books in 2023! And I’m excited to read more from her.
Jumata Emill – The Black Queen – this one was an entertaining read. Especially because I decided to read more thrillers this year and I don’t know why.
Sue Lynn Tan – Daughter of the Moon Goddess – I still have to read the other books in the series. I love the covers!
Susan Stokes-Chapman – Pandora – I just couldn’t get into Greek mythology this year and I don’t know why!
Sophie Sullivan – A Guide to Being Just Friends – this one was just okay.
Nisha J. Tuli – Trial of the Sun Queen, Rule of the Aurora King, Heart of Night & Fire – I think it’s obvious I like her work and was glad to stumbled upon her books on Kindle Unlimited.

Sajni Patel – My Sister’s Big Fat Indian Wedding – this one was quite and the book cover is so vibrant!
Beth C. Greenberg – First Quiver – Greek mythology characters but again this year was not my year for Greek mythology.
Lauren Kung Jessen – Lunar Love – I saw this all over the blogosphere – I liked it and will definitely try a book of hers again.
Lina Chern – Play the Fool – this was a fun mystery and will definitely try this author out again.
Ginny Baird – Right Girl, Wrong Side; The Holiday Mix-Up – I read two books of hers this year and both were 3 stars.

Kerrigan Byrne & Cynthia St. Aubin – Nevermore Bookstore – this was entertaining.
Autumn Blake – Bewitched Shadows – a witchy book that I just couldn’t really get into.
Lana Ferguson – The Nanny – this one was spicy! Would definitely try more of her books.
L.J. Swallow – Thornwood Academy – one of those quick read series – very reminiscent to Wednesday (the show) though. Won’t continue unless I have nothing else to read.
Margaret Atwood – The Handmaid’s Tale – I wanted to read something classic and this one was good!
Ebony LeDelle – Love Radio – this one was good! Will read more from this author.

Elayne Audrey Becker – Forestborn – it took me awhile to finish this one and I don’t think I’ll finish the series – not because I didn’t like it but definitely a mood read.
Rati Methrotra – Night of the Raven, Dawn of the Dove ; Flower and Thorn – I read two books from this author this year and found both entertaining. Will definitely read more from her.
Alexis Calder – Kingdom of Blood & Salt – this one was okay – won’t continue series.
TJ Klune – The House of the Cerulean Sea – wanted to see what the hype was about and it’s a very cozy story!
Kristyn J. Miller – Seven Rules for Breaking Hearts – I liked this one.

Maren Stoffels – Stranger Danger – this was a fun thriller. Will definitely read more from this author when I’m in the mood.
Alex Aster – Lightlark – I wanted to see what the hype was all about and this wasn’t for me. Won’t continue.
Kyrie McCauley – All the Dead Lie Down – I couldn’t get into this one.
Sarah Adams – Practice Makes Perfect – this was cute and will definitely revisit this author.
Stacey Trombley – A Taste of Torment (read the whole series) – this was pretty good and addictive! Bingeable series.
Stacia Stark – A Court this Cruel & Lovely – not bad and I was going to continue the series but for some reason couldn’t get into book two but will try again.

Amanda Linsmeier – Starlings this was interesting and will definitely check out more from this author.
Lena Jeong – And Break the Pretty Kings – I love the cover but didn’t love the story.
Mazey Eddings – Tilly in Technicolor – I loved this and am surprised I’ve never read a book from this author before!
Ellen O’Clover – Seven Percent of Ro Devereux – I loved this one a lot so will definitely read more from this author.
K.L. Walther – The Summer of Broken Rules – will definitely read from this author when I’m in a Taylor Swift mood!
Krystal Marquis – The Davenports – I didn’t love this one but I’m still interested in more works from this author.

Zoulfa Katoun – As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow – amazing book! One of my 5 stars reads of 2023. Will definitely read more from this author.
Skyla Arndt – Together We Rot – I liked this one, it was definitely dark and sorta creepy – more mysterious though.
Mia Tsai – Bitter Medicine – this was a fun urban fantasy book that I enjoyed!
Sharina Harris – Sign of the Slayer – Buffy the Vampire fans would love this book.
Delilah S. Dawson – Midnight at the Houdini – this was an interesting book but not my cup of tea.
Julie Soto – Forget Me Not – loved this one and can’t wait to read more!

Kate Pearsell – Bittersweet in the Hollow – I liked this one a lot and will look forward to reading more!
Ana Huang – King of Wrath; King of Pride – I’m working on King of Greed right now so I think it’s safe to say that I enjoy her books so far!
Jamie Varon – Main Character Energy – this was a blogtour read and I liked it!
Thea Guanzon – The Hurricane Wars – this one has very interesting world-building but I like that the author is Filipino so I’ll continue the series.
Brandy Colbert – The Blackwoods – there was one very compelling character in this story that I loved a lot, she was my favorite part of this story.
Diana Rodriguez Wallach – Hatchet Girls – this one definitely hit the spot for a creepy, somewhat gory thriller – would love to read more!

Abiola Bello – Love in Winter Wonderland – this one was cute, I love that it revolved around saving a book store!
Elana K. Arnold – The Blood Years – love this historical novel.
Isabel Ibañez – What the River Knows – I can’t believe this is the first book I’ve read from this author! Loved it!
Alix E. Harrow – Starling House – I actually had a book from this author years ago but I never read it. So this was my first book and I thought it was entertaining.
Sara Hashem – The Jasad Heir – some parts of this was slow but overall I loved it and look forward to the sequel.
Jennifer D. Lyle – Swarm – this one was funky! Giant butterflies that attack? And zombies? Pretty entertaining if you are into end of the world scenarios!

Lauren Roberts – Powerless – this one was okay, and I’m 50/50 on whether I’ll continue the series.
Erin La Rosa – Plot Twist – a cute rom-com with some heavy topics (alcoholism)
Jennifer Chen – Artifacts of an Ex – I thought the art aspects of the story was cool but the characters felt older than high school age. Still interested to read other works though.

I can’t believe I read 58 new authors this year! 😱 Wow…I wasn’t expect that many. But I’m happy to say almost more than half of these are authors I would love to read from again!

+ I read a book by this author last year and thought it was pretty good and this book is set in that same world. What I really enjoyed about this book is that it’s in the same world, so we get to learn more about it but it’s inspired by South Asia and I love that representation. I like that is it unique.

+ This has a lot of action. Kress is a fighter in the ring, but she has a bad reputation because of something her parents did. I love that she’s a strong character. Kress is an outcast but because she’s a fighter she gets chosen to go on this expedition deep underground. She is part of this expedition group of miners and other people but not everyone is trustworthy so there is a lot of tense moments underground with this group of people and monsters coming for them.

+ There is a little bit of romance going on with Kress and her best-friend, Rivan. It’s a friends to lovers situation so it takes them awhile to really admit their feelings but there is a lot of angst and longing in both but they are kind of stuck in a harrowing situation so it takes them awhile to figure that out.

~ I didn’t totally connect to any of the characters but I did still enjoyed the story. Would have loved to be more invested into the characters though but for some reason I just couldn’t.

My Thoughts:

I like the South Asian inspired setting and the action is great. I just wish I could connect to the characters so I could be invested in the high stakes of their situation but despite all that I did enjoy this story for the most part.

+ Okay I said maybe I’m over historical romances, but I think if it’s a historical fantasy romance like this particular book then I’m not over it at all. I definitely like how this story had the drama of a gossip sheet (like Bridgerton), the balls, a royal wedding, a romance and a rebellion going on.

+ There’s magic in this book and Niamh’s craft is sewing. I thought it was pretty cool how she could create fashions that evoke emotions. Other characters have magic too like but not everyone has it. It definitely made the story feel enchanted with the element of magic that certain characters could wield.

+ This story has a strong cast of characters from the main ones Niamh and Kit to the rest of the group which consisted of Kit’s future wife, his best friend and his family. I like the LGBT+ representation, Niamh and Kit are both bi-sexual, and other characters are queer as well.

+~ Speaking of romance -I love a good enemies to lovers romance and there is a lot of tension between Niamh and Kit which for the most part I enjoyed. But there was something about their romance at times that frustrated me also maybe it’s the times he’s being rude – but his grumpiness is supposed to be attractive? I just felt like he was being a brat at times.

~ The political conflict in the book didn’t feel solved at the end, and honestly I think Jack and his wife could have their own book where they fall in love with one another and he figures out how to become a better leader.

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed this book and loved that it was historical romance with magic elements I thought the writing was very lyrical and made the story enchanting.

5 days until Christmas y’all! My hubby is home but even with him home, I feel more exhausted? I got to go over to my mom’s house this weekend and helped do some cleaning. She’s always cleaning but since her surgery she can’t do heavy lifting – even though I know she wants to! So I did the cleaning for her. Her healing is going well, she still feels a bit weak but she looks better each time I see her.
