Books With Witches | TTT | Top Ten Tuesday | 10/22/24

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Please check out her website for more TTT topics!

This weekโ€™s topic is: How My Reading Habits Have Changed Over Time

Books With Witches

So we are sticking to the spooky season themes for TTT this month because I can’t do the topics – my brain functioning is almost fried (almost lol)…so I need EASY topics and this is easy. I feel like I’ve read a bunch of books this year with witches so let’s see what they are:

Goodreads Monday: A Monsoon Rising by. Thea Guazon

Happy Monday!

Goodreads Monday is a weekly meme where you chose a random book from your Goodreads TBR and show it off. This meme is hosted by Budget Tales Book Blog.

Title: A Monsoon Rising (The Hurricane Wars, #2)

Author: Thea Guazon

Pages: 400

Links: Goodreads | Amazon

Publication Date: 12/10/24

Synopsis:

Two hearts circle each other in the eye of the storm in this highly-anticipated follow-up to The Hurricane Warsโ€”prepare for more enemies-to-lovers romance, magical adventures, and political schemes in this Southeast Asian-inspired world.

After a lifetime of war, Alaric and Talasyn were thrust into an alliance between their homelands that was supposed to end the fighting; however, being married to their sworn foe feels far from peaceful. Now Talasyn must play the part of Alaricโ€™s willing empress while her allies secretly plot to overthrow his reign. But the longer the couple are forced together, the harder it becomes to deny the feelings crackling like lightning between them. When the time comes to act, can she trust him, or must she ignore her heart for the sake of so many others?

As the master of the Shadowforged Legion, Alaric has trained for battle all his life, but marrying a Lightweaver might be his most dangerous challenge yet. With tensions between nations churning, he needs to focus on the greater threatโ€”the Moonless Dark, a cataclysmic magical event that could devour everything. Only he and Talasyn can stop it, with a powerful merging of light and shadow that they alone can create together. But saving their world from this disaster is a mere preface to his fatherโ€™s more sinister schemes, and his wife is a burning flame in the darkness, tempting both his loyalties and his desires.

The Hurricane Wars arenโ€™t over. Itโ€™s time to choose whatโ€”and whoโ€”to fight for. The world holds its breath amidst a whirlwind of new magic and old secrets that could change everything.

From the author of the bestselling phenomenon, the Kissing Booth, comes another sizzling story about an overachieving girl who unknowingly kisses the one guy she shouldnโ€™t the night before her new internship begins.

One summer internship. Two complete opposites. And a connection neither expected…

Annalise Sherwood has worked herself to the bone to get a place on a prestigious internship program and nothing is going to stop her now. Work hard, play later, that’s her motto. She figures one night letting her guard down won’t hurt, though – especially when it ends with the best kiss of her life.

But to Anna’s horror, she discovers that the mystery guy she kissed that night is none other than Lloyd, the company CEO’s son. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he’s everyone’s favorite guy and a total charmer, swanning around like he owns the place. And from the moment they meet again, he rubs Anna up the wrong way.

As the summer and the internship wane on, Lloyd seems to be finding any excuse to annoy Anna, and she’s not afraid to give it right back to him. But when a lot of late night working brings them unexpectedly closer, she begins to wonder if there’s more to him than she originally thought..

Content Warning: strained parental relationships

Likes:

+ Annalise is an intern and she’s making new friends, learning the ropes and also trying to avoid a workplace romance with the guy she met before she realized with is the CEO’s son. I like how we see her journey trying to succeed on her own. Also she has some mom-issues that eventually get worked out by the end of the story

+ The romance interested me more in the second half of the book. For the first half, Annalise and Lloyd are trying to figure out how to remain being coworkers and fighting an attraction. But it really develops more in the second half when they can’t fight it anymore. But even from there it’s not easy for them.

Dislikes:

~ I didn’t really love either character. Lloyd seems like a good character in the beginning but I thought he came off as a jerk in some situations, especially when more things about Anna are revealed. As for Anna, I think there was too much back and forth, debating on her feelings about Lloyd. I can see how both of them got frustrated but I didn’t like Lloyd.

~ The romance is too slow, like I said, too much back and forth between them.

Final Thoughts:

I enjoyed this story more in the second half than the first and I didn’t quite warm up to Lloyd so overall I thought it was an okay book.

  • Copy the first few lines, but donโ€™t give anything else about the book away just yet โ€“ you need to hook the reader first

The breathtaking sequel to the instant New York Times bestseller Night of the Witch culminates with a sweeping romance and an epic battle to determine the fate of magicโ€ฆand the world.

Fritzi is a champion. After escaping the clutches of Dieter Kirch, the sadistic leader of the witch hunters, Fritzi and Otto have taken refuge among the witches of the Black Forest. Fritzi is finally ready to assume her place on the council as the coven’s goddess-chosen champion. Plagued by distrust and self-doubt, Fritzi throws herself into her duty to serve the goddesses . . . until she uncovers a powerful secret that could mean the very undoing of magic itself.

Otto is a warrior. He swears himself to Fritzi as her bonded protector, certain the peaceful unity of a witch and hunter will heal the wounds he helped make. But as the horrifying plot that threatens the Black Forest’s magic comes to light, Otto will have to face his both his past and what it means to bind himself to a magic he does not fully understand.

Shadows loom. Truths are revealed. And as dangers new and old arise, Fritzi and Otto must stand together against everything that threatens magicโ€”even if the biggest threat might be the very bond they share.

Content Warning: violence, possession

I read Night of the Witch last year, which is book one of this series. So I decided to read book two and here are my thoughts:

Likes:

+ Like the first book, I thought there was good world-building. This is set in Germany when witches were being burned so I always like a little historical fiction in my fantasy books, and this particular part of history is one that I don’t know much about.

+ There are new challenges Fritzi and Otto have to deal with like the return of Dieter who can take possession of Fritzi. But I love how Fritzi and Otto’s bond has really grown and though there is romance, I feel like it wasn’t the main focus. They are a pretty solid couple with no drama between which was kind of nice!

+ Even thought this is a dark book, I love the humor some of the secondary characters brought into the story like Liesel, she such a fun character always checking up on Fritzi and Otto.

Dislikes:

~ I felt like this book was slower for me to get into. For a minute I had to get my bearings and remember what happened in book one but once I did, I thought not much was happening like in book one.

~ The ending felt rushed.

My Thoughts:

I think this was a solid conclusion to the duology and overall an interesting series if you are into witches, history, romance, magic and fantasy!

The snark and instant chemistry of Better Than the Movies meets the indulgent summer fun and family hijinks of The Summer of Broken Rules in this compulsively readable rom-com from Alex Light, author of The Upside of Falling.

Jackie Myers is a fraud. Or she might be a geniusโ€”the juryโ€™s still out.

The thing is, she secretly runs pleasebreakmyheart, a gone-viral account aimed at breaking hearts and ending relationshipsโ€ฆ. And she just used it to break up her insufferable eternal nemesis’s picture-perfect relationship.

Wilson is the buttoned-up, type A assistant manager of her nightmaresโ€”but it turns out heโ€™s also, apparently, a really great boyfriend.

So with her conscience (and paycheck) on the line, Jackie decides thereโ€™s only one thing to do: Sheโ€™s going to help Wilson win his ex-girlfriend back. Which should be easy, considering Jackie hates himโ€ฆright?

I needed a light contemporary romance book to balance out all my fantasy reads and so I read this one. Here are my thoughts:

Likes:

+ This one is a quick read and it’s light on the romance. It’s a coming of age story about a girl named Jackie who doesn’t know what her next steps are after high school but that doesn’t mean she’s not doing anything about that. She runs a romance advice blog that has been going viral, and for her day job, she dresses up in a frog costume and deals with the kids. Not only that, her older sister got her a job at her workplace. So it’s not like Jackie is not trying, she’s definitely trying to find her way and that’s relatable.

+ There is an enemies to lovers romance between Jackie and her manager, Wilson. I thought their banter was really funny. He’s uptight and Jackie is the opposite. They would have stayed enemies is Jackie didn’t offer to help him get his ex-girlfriend back. I thought it was a cute romance.

+ Jackie’s relationship with her older twin sisters, Jillian and Julie, is a big part of this story. They are already almost set in their careers so it makes Jackie feel like she’s a person with no direction. The sisters definitely have a close bond and a lot of the conflict in the story deals with mostly that relationship. There is another relationship that is important to her, which is the one she has with her best friend who is leaving for college, so Jackie is juggling a lot of things at one time.

Dislikes:

~ I felt like Wilson came off older than Jackie – and he is – but he just seemed way older than her even though they were only like a year or two apart in age. He is set with a lot of responsibility though, so I can see that but there were times I just couldn’t picture him as a 19 year old.

Final Thoughts:

I read this book fairly quick and I think for teens and young adults, they would relate a lot with Jackie. I was looking for a light, young adult, contemporary romance and this one is pretty entertaining.

โ€œYou made a bargain…
Your soul for hisโ€”and now, you are
mine.โ€

Cate Holloway knows the unspoken rule of New avoid the powerful Gage crime family at all costs. Of course, that was before her brother got caught in their chaos. Now

Cate has no choice but to confront the dark and forbidding prince of New Orleans himself and beg for her brotherโ€™s life.

But Lachlan Gage is as lethal as he is beautifulโ€ฆand the only currency heโ€™s interested in is her soul.

Because Lachlan isnโ€™t just some ruthless criminal. Heโ€™s fae. And he has his own secret reasons for binding her to him.

Tricked and desperate, Cate is torn between humanity and the breathtaking Otherworld. A place filled with shadows and secrets, with members of each fae court plotting against her just as her captorโ€™s motives for trapping her become more mysterious.

And if she canโ€™t break this sinister bargain in the next thirty days, sheโ€™ll be bound to the inscrutable yet infuriatingly tempting fae prince and his deadly worldโ€ฆforever.

Content Warning: violence, mentions of sexual assault/rape

I saw this book on Kindle Unlimited, loved the cover and also wanted to read something with Fae and so I borrowed it. Here are my thoughts:

Likes:

+ Pleasantly surprised that this was an urban fantasy set in New Orleans! There is just something so dark and mysterious about New Orleans and I can definitely see vampires, fae, and all the other monsters living there.

+ I like Cate and her need to help people even though she barely has anyone in her life. She is an orphan who was passed around in foster care and got close to Channing who is now her brother. She tries her best to look out for him but his choices in life has gotten him trouble with the Gage family, who run New Orleans.

+ The cast of characters are great! I like that even though Lachlan Gage is a dangerous man, he has a dysfunctional family who Cate gets kind of close to, especially with his sister.

+ The romance is the slowest burn ever and I will say I thought with a title with the word “Filthy” in it, I thought it was going to be super spicy but it actually wasn’t! That was surprising, but there was spice but I found it pretty mild or not as detailed as I thought it would be. But I did love the connection that was growing between Cate and Lachlan, even with all the drama happening around them, and the slow burn between them. Their banter was fun and I love how she never backed down with him.

+ Love the twist at the end and look forward to book two!

Dislikes:

~ Just wanted a little more spice! It’s a closed door kinda story.

Final Thoughts:

I think this hit the spot for what I was craving for at the moment which was an urban fantasy story with a sexy Fae, lots of banter, some Fae politics, found family, and a MC with a secret background. All the tropes I love in one place! I’ll definitely be reading the next book.

WWW Wednesday | 10/16/24

WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Sam over on Taking on a World of Words.

The idea is pretty simple, every week you dedicate a post to the three Wโ€™s:

What are you currently reading?

What have you just finished reading?

What are you going to read next?

Well, Fall break has come and gone and oh it was nice to sleep in and just relax. Can you believe Halloween is in 2 weeks? Which means it’s almost November, which means it’s almost my birthday (which is right before election day – yay me – talk about anxiety for my birthday! lol). But that means it’s also almost Christmas – which means…my husband comes home for good! ๐Ÿ˜… It’s been quite a 2 years of parenting alone but you know what? It’s also an accomplishment and I’m like, YEAH, I DID THAT! Yay for me! As I tell my kids all the time, you can do hard things and yes I tell myself this all the time when I’m feeling frustrated or discouraged.

Anyway…what have I been reading – take a look!

What are you currently reading?

Stranger Skies by. Pascale LaCelle – 8% – finally started back reading this one! Will be finished this week I hope.

The Games Gods Play by. Abigail Owen – 20% – I’ll get to this one when I finish some arcs.

The Whispering Night by. Susan Dennard – 11% – will be working on this one too this week!

Dating and Dragons by. Kristy Boyce – 6% – hoping to finish this one soon!

A Queen’s Game by. Katharine McGee – 2% – just started this one!

Dark Water Daughter by. H.M. Long – 7% – I’m determined to finish this one before I have to return it!

What have you just finished reading?

What are you going to read next?

What are you reading right now?

Wisteria by. Adalyn Grace | Book Review

My Rating: โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ซ

Title: Wisteria (Belladonna, #3)

Author: Adalyn Grace

Format: eBook (NetGalley)

Pages: 419

Publication Date: 8/20/24

Categories: Romance, Fantasy, Series, Enemies to Lovers, Gothic, Young Adult

#1 New York Times bestselling author Adalyn Grace delivers a sensational conclusion to the deathly and decadent Belladonna trilogy, with dramatic twists and a seductive new romance that will set readers’ hearts ablaze.

Blythe Hawthorne has never let anyone tell her what to doโ€”not society, not her overprotective father, and certainly not the man sheโ€™s bound herself to, no matter how rude and insufferable he is. In fact, sheโ€™s determined to be a thorn in his side for the rest of her days, even as he ensures that her life in his palace is anything but a fairytale. But as Blythe discovers a new side of herself linked to his past, sheโ€™ll have to decide if sheโ€™s willing to let an unexpected spark igniteโ€ฆand to discover the truth about who she really is.

I really enjoyed the first two books of this series and definitely wanted to continue the story. Also how could I resist this book cover? It’s one of the prettiest book covers this year! I finally finished the book and here are my thoughts:

Likes:

+ Blythe and Aris take center stage in this story. There is so much animosity between them, it’s amazing they both can stand to be in the same room together. Aris is such a grump though, I could see why Blythe was frustrated with him all the time.

+ The story is beautifully written – from the world building, the setting and just how the characters are fully fleshed out. We already know Blythe from when she was introduced in the other books but this is her story. I love how strong her character is even with an illness.

+ The love story is tragic and bittersweet. There are some moments of heat between them but very few.

Dislikes:

~ I think their love story is too tragic, which is fine – I mean the love between Fate and Life is sad. But I wanted more romance between Blythe and Aris since they spent most of the book fighting and hating one another. Especially because I love how much they hated one another – I wanted the payoff but I didn’t feel satisfied.

~ I didn’t love Chaos but that is what “chaos” does, it disrupts everything but still, I just didn’t love the ending.

Final Thoughts:

I’m a little bummed this one fell short of my expectations but I think the whole series overall is great. Blythe and Aris deserved a story and I think that Fate and Life finding each other again and again is beautiful and bittersweet.
