Living together? That’s a war Graysen was never trained for.

Imprisoned in Graysen’s tower, Nelle Wychthorn finds herself ensnared by something far more dangerous than chains.

The sway is awakening. His tamer influence bleeds into her thoughts, seizing hold of her will—and he doesn’t even know it.

If he ever discovers the hold he already has… she’s lost.

Escape is her only chance. Convince him to open the door, find the hidden tunnel, and run.

Graysen Crowther walks a knife’s edge. He defies his family by keeping Nelle in his tower instead of the dungeon. She’s a pawn to force her father’s hand—surrender the god‑forged weapon, or lose his daughter.

But living together?
He’s utterly out of his depth.

Nelle wages war, tormenting him mercilessly, upending his carefully ordered world. Yet within the intimate chaos as roommates, fury and heat collide. Wild. Consuming. Ruinous.

When Graysen is ordered into the catacombs to hunt an elusive beast, long‑buried memories resurface of his mother’s secret life—and a mysterious Horned God who may know the truth about her final day.

To right the terrible wrong that haunts him, he must find the Horned God to unlock everything he desperately needs… if his family doesn’t uncover his true intentions first.

Content Warning: violence, death

This is book two in the Of Crows and Thorns Saga, so I’m not sure why this one is called Part One?

~ I gave book one three stars because though I was intrigued with the characters, I thought book two would have more world building which it needed badly in book one. Once again, this story is focused on the characters and there is no new world-building at all. I need world-building. This story mostly stays in the Crowther family fortress or keep. Graysen does leave and we sort of follow him on a mission but again…it needs more world-building.

+~ This is a very character-driven story. Graysen is stuck between a rock and a hard place, either to save his mom, or save Nelle. He knows what he and his family is doing to Nelle is wrong, but he needs to find a way to appease everyone, which sucks. Nelle is a prisoner at the Crowther’s fortress and they plan to auction her off in order to find their mother. I liked learning more about Graysen’s home life, but I need him to step it up big time and do the right thing and let Nelle go. As for Nelle, I wish she was older than 19, because she does act like a teenager. The bickering should be funny, but they were just like two kids fighting at times. So I’m still waiting for Nelle to grow, but I know there isn’t much she can do stuck at the fortress- actually I want to see her carry out her promise and burn the place down but nothing like that happened. I do love her wolf-wraith, Sage.

+~ I can’t believe I’m happy about a book having LESS smut, but yay, it has less smut than book one. Though Graysen and Nelle are forced to be together, there is the issue of him betraying her and her being a prisoner that keeps them apart emotionally and physically for most of the book. There is eventually some spice because she’s a Wyrm and he’s her Tamer and it is a kind of mating bond that is hard for them to deny. I feel like they finally get to know each other better in this book but I still want to see more of an emotional connection between them. And speaking of smut…it felt so comical at times! I think it’s supposed to be funny because these two are always fighting. I was laughing at times but also rolling my eyes at these two – I could not take them seriously.

~ At this rate, I want to learn more about Silas Boone and less about the Crowthers. 😒. The story barely budged forward and this is a 635 page book (but it does read quickly because I kept waiting for something to happen). We learn a lot about Tabitha, Graysen’s mom, but I want to learn more about the Horned Gods – what is their deal? I mean, can Nelle have another romance option, like maybe Silas? I’m open to it because Graysen needs to lose her and hurt about it. 😅

~ I wanted Graysen to grovel, but he hasn’t even said sorry…it’s the only reason I read this book actually. To see how Nelle would punish the Crowthers…but except for some pranks she pulls on Graysen, there is no punishing happening, except to Nelle. I actually haven’t read a book that’s made me so mad at the characters before 😂.

~ And speaking of lack of world-building…I have no sense of what this world is, but they name drop brand names a little too much.

Final Thoughts:

This book feels like filler, because nothing much happens to move the story forward. I still want more world-building, character growth, and emotional connection in the romance. I want to see Nelle enact her revenge and leave Graysen actually, which I know won’t happen – maybe that’s why I’m mad at the story 😅. She’s going to forgive him and help his family out, isn’t she? I guess I’ll have to wait and see.

Let’s Talk Bookish:  What do you collect besides books? | 2/20/26

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly bookish meme originally created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @ Book Nook Bits, where every Friday, bloggers write discussion posts based on a weekly prompt and Dini @ dinipandareads has cohosted since the beginning of 2025.

This week’s topic is:

February 20: What do you collect besides books? (Suggested by Jillian @ Jillian the Bookish Butterfly)

Prompts: Do you own a lot of books? Do you think of yourself as a book collector? Outside of reading, do you have any other hobbies that involve collecting things? What would you love to have a collection of?

**********

Do you own a lot of books?

No, I don’t. I used to, but over the years with moving a few times, I had to make some hard decisions. 😅 Now I have 3 book shelves in the house. I actually just added the 3rd one and that’s probably all I can have right now and I’m fine with it. I started collecting more sprayed edge books but I think I’ve slowed down with that right now.

Do you think of yourself as a book collector?

No, I don’t think I am. Not with the collections I’ve seen other people have! Compared to them, I am not a book collector….but I WISH.

Outside of reading, do you have any other hobbies that involve collecting things?

Journals…I used to collect journals, but not anymore! Now, if I need one, I’ll buy one at Ross or something for really cheap. I have been buying book journals for recording the books I read, I feel like it helps me write my blog posts. I take notes in the journals and then that helps me write out of my blogs. But at least with these book journals, I only need to buy one for each year – unless I read more than 200 books. I almost started collecting Pop Mart stuff but nipped that in the bud when I got back into buying sprayed edged books.

What would you love to have a collection of?

You know I wanted to get into collecting vinyl and realized I can’t collect books, vinyls AND save to go to concerts (because I always have to fly out to one)….SO vinyls are taking a backseat, plus I don’t even have a good vinyl player or space to put it. My cheap on is collecting dust. I have like…4 vinyls 😅 and just bought the new Bruno Mars one, but that’s IT. Where does your money go? My money goes to is my KIDS, food, books, and travel. All of it is expensive…I hate inflation. 😩

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Title: The Poet Empress

Author: Shen Tao

Format: ebook (kindle unlimited)

Pages: 400

Publication Date: 1/20/26

Categories: Dark Fantasy, Historical Fantasy

Debut author Shen Tao introduces readers to the lush, deadly world of The Poet Empress, a sweeping, epic and intimate fantasy perfect for fans of The Serpent & the Wings of Night, The Song of Achilles and She Who Became the Sun.

In the waning years of the Azalea Dynasty, the emperor is dying, the land consumed by famine, and poetry magic lost to all except the powerful.

Wei Yin is desperate. After the fifth death of a sibling, with her family and village on the brink of starvation, she will do anything to save those she loves.

Even offer herself as concubine to the cruel heir of the beautiful and brutal Azalea House.

But in a twist of fate, the palace stands on the knife-edge of civil war with Wei trapped in its center…at the side of a violent prince.

To survive, Wei must harden her heart, rely on her wit, and become dangerous herself. Even if it means becoming a poet in a world where women are forbidden to read—and composing the most powerful spell of all. A ballad of death…and love.

The Poet Empress is an epic fantasy that explores darker themes, subjects, and scenes that may not be suitable for all readers. Please see the author’s content note at the beginning of the book.

Content Warning: violence, death, self-harm, abuse, torture

I heard so many good things about this book and was happy to see it on Kindle Unlimited.

+ Wei, her family, and their whole village is starving. There has been a famine for years, and there seems to be no help from the emperor. So when the new heir for Emperor needs concubines, Wei tries her luck and is totally rejected because she’s a peasant. Until she makes a bold statement. Her life changes from then on but it’s relative to say that her life improved for the better because now she got to love in Azalea House, the house for concubines and she has food. But her fiancé tortures her every night. He hurts her physically and then heals her. To top it off the concubines want her gone so Wei has to learn quick how to survive.

+ Wei is an amazing character. She’s strong because of her poor upbringing, but quick to learn when she sees the royals are a different beast to deal with. I love how she realizes learning to read and write will give her power. Wei goes from a peasant to the one who has the most power in the story. She may not have magic like the Princes but she is smart and strong (mentally). Terren, her soon to be husband, kills people for fun. He hurts Wei, for amusement, but wow is his backstory heartbreaking. I hated him but he was made into the monster he is and half of this story is about learning how it happened. Wei has some choices to make at the end of this story because she can change the course of history…but will she do it? There are a lot of morally gray characters in this story which is only fitting with so much at stake.

+ There is so much court political intrigue and there is a lot of violence too. But it’s a sad story when you see how the court turned brother against brother. How power corrupts, and how power can be a mask for fear. Or how power is limited to only men, by denying women things like learning how to read. This is another book that is timely for what is happening in the world today – especially when it comes to women’s rights, how women are treated, and the abuse happening to women at the hand of elites.

+ The magic system was very interesting, it had to do with poetry. To have power you needed to know how to read and write.

~ It may seem like a slow read at first but it’s building towards an epic ending. It’s necessary to learn the background of Mao and his brother Terren. But don’t expect romance in this story, this is not that type of story! The love story is the one between Mao and Terren and how they are torn from one another. Also this is a dark story so check any trigger warnings.

Quotes From This Book:

“What is the point of suffering if we have nothing to gain?” – The Poet Empress by. Shen Tao

“How often was it, I wondered then, that the path we took was one forced upon us?” – The Poet Empress by. Shen Tao

“Why are women always expected to love those who would hurt us? To take care of those who would use us, however they please, without the slightest regard for whether we lived or died?” – The Poet Empress by. Shen Tao

“So you see now, Lady Yin, power is such a wicked thing. Razing everything it its path, consuming all, leaving none untouched. Not even the kindest of souls among us are spared, once they have had so much as a taste.” – The Poet Empress by. Shen Tao

“I don’t know how much suffering is normal. How much was ordinary, expected, the price we paid to live. How much was created by us, needless.” – The Poet Empress by. Shen Tao

“It could be the greatest nation in the world, the most magnificent empire there ever existed. But if it could not keep its own children safe and fed, was it really something worth fighting to save?” – The Poet Empress by. Shen Tao

“To grow a tree was not easy, the wait until it bore fruit long. But if the seed was not planted in the first place, nothing would ever grow.” – The Poet Empress by. Shen Tao

Final Thoughts:

This is a powerful story about power and the love between two brothers that is ruined. It’s about women and their lack of power, but the high expectations put upon them. There is so much to unpack in this story and it is a dark one. It’s violent. The court political intrigue kept me in invested and though Terren was a villain, I still needed to know how he came to be this villain. I felt like it was a slow burn of a book, and yet it’s hard to put down because Wei’s story is compelling. Can’t wait to see what this author writes next!

I, Medusa by. Ayana Gray | Book Review

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Spice: 🌶️

Title: I, Medusa

Author: Ayana Gray

Format: hardcover (own)

Pages: 336

Publication Date: 11/18/25

Categories: Historical Fiction, Greek Mythology, Retelling, Fantasy, LGBT+

From New York Times bestselling author Ayana Gray comes a new kind of villain origin story, reimagining one of the most iconic monsters in Greek mythology as a provocative and powerful young heroine.

Meddy has spent her whole life as a footnote in someone else’s story. Out of place next to her beautiful, immortal sisters and her parents—both gods, albeit minor ones—she dreams of leaving her family’s island for a life of adventure. So when she catches the eye of the goddess Athena, who invites her to train as an esteemed priestess in her temple, Meddy leaps at the chance to see the world beyond her home.

In Athens’ colorful market streets and the clandestine chambers of the temple, Meddy flourishes in her role as Athena’s favored acolyte, getting her first tastes of purpose and power. But when she is noticed by another Olympian, Poseidon, a drunken night between girl and god ends in violence, and the course of Meddy’s promising future is suddenly and irrevocably altered.

Her locs transformed into snakes as punishment for a crime she did not commit, Medusa must embrace a new identity—not as a victim, but as a vigilante—and with it, the chance to write her own story as mortal, martyr, and myth.

Exploding with rage, heartbreak, and love, I, Medusa portrays a young woman caught in the cross currents between her heart’s deepest desires and the cruel, careless games the Olympian gods play

Content Warning: violence, death, rape, domestic abuse, physical abuse, sexual assault, grooming

+ I have always loved the story of Medusa without really knowing much about her or how she came to be cursed. I think I was always drawn to her because of her power but this story definitely gave me the background about her that I needed to know!

+~ The story focuses on Medusa/Meddy when she is young. She is a mortal young lady born to a god and goddess. Her sisters are immortal so already Medusa is at a slight disadvantage in life where the gods rule. Home life is scary when her parents tempers flare, there is physical abuse, but on the other side of the coin, home is where she is surrounded by her sisters who she loves very much and Theo, her best friend. When she tries to save her sister from a marriage to another man who is abusive, Athena, the goddess steps in and offers to make Medusa an acolyte at her temple in Athens. The part of the story where she is training as an acolyte moves a little slower but it does pick up.

+ Meddy is someone who does something when she sees something wrong. I love that about her even when society has rules about what a woman can and can’t do, she breaks the rules. The story shows also the power dynamics between the gods and goddesses and everyone else – how they can make or break a person’s life on a whim, due to their judgment alone. So many times Meddy felt helpless and I felt for her. She also experiences racism in Athens at the temple. Meddy is also preyed on by a god – she’s only 17 and naive about the world, and hasn’t been taught a lot about it, and he takes advantage of that.

+ I love Meddy’s relationship with her sisters. The female rage Meddy and her sister feel after they are curse, is warranted and this book is even timely with what’s going on in the world today. I felt rage with them!

~ I loved that the story told me about Meddy’s younger life, up until she is cursed. But I would have loved to have how she dies play out also. I felt like that was rushed and maybe that part doesn’t really matter but I wanted to see it play out.

QUOTES FROM THE BOOK:

“That’s the curious thing about monsters,” she whispers. “The worst ones don’t bother hiding in the dark.” – I, Medusa by. Ayana Gray

Final Thoughts:

This is a beautifully told story about Medusa’s life as a young woman. We get to see her upbringing and the power of men and the gods and goddesses. I felt helpless with Medusa but also proud of her for helping others who were in trouble. The female rage that Medusa and her sisters feel at the end is relevant to how women are feeling today, so this story is very timely. I do wish we got to see how her life played out until the very end, but other than that I loved this book.

Aloha friends!

Another week is over and here’s what happened:

+ We had a high wind event this past weekend, wind and rain which caused schools to close on Monday, but my kids already had that day off so their schools chose another day off, which was Friday – so lucky them they have a 4 day weekend. I’m glad because they are both trying to heal from being sick and I think this 4-day weekend will help a lot.

+ I hope everyone had a Happy Valentine’s Day if you celebrate. I get my kids Valentine’s now instead of my hubby because honestly? That man has everything 😅.

**********

Do you like to read romance novels?

I love romance novels – it’s the genre that got me started reading when I was in my teen years. Most of the books I read are romance – whether it’s romantasy, fantasy with romance, contemporary romance, historical romance….yes, I love romance!

Who are your favourite fictional couples?

Yikes…this is a hard one and I don’t know which type of romance we are talking about here so it’s going to be RANDOM choices because there are so many I love but I can’t remember them all, so here are some that just are kinda memorable to me as I scroll through my blog posts😅:

  • Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, of course…Pride and Prejudice by. Jane Austen
  • Daphne and Miles – Funny Story by. Emily Henry
  • Vanka and Emeric – Little Thieves by. Margaret Owen
  • Guinevere and Oskar – Tusk Love by. Thea Guanzon

Which characters from different books or series do you think would be perfect for each other?

This is an even harder question and I have no brain capacity for this 😅.

My kids were sick over the weekend and then we had a stormy weekend. It actually got COLD in Hawaii and when I say cold it was 59-62 degrees on Saturday. I was freezing 🥶. I did get some reading done, all my audiobooks on hold on Libby came through 🤦🏻‍♀️….so yes I’ve been trying to finish them so I can work on March arcs.

Also did you watch the Superbowl? The game wasn’t very exciting – I kind of tuned out, and the commercials were awful – what happened to fun and funny commercials of the past? 😩 So not even the commercials kept me entertained. The Bad Bunny halftime show was so good though 10/10 no notes! I was dancing! I loved how his set showed community – I loved the people who were the bushes and I loved seeing the elderly people during the show also. It was so good!

Another week is over and here’s what happened:

+ Just getting through life while our country is in a dumpster fire! What else is new this year? 😒

+ Well my daughter started off the week with sniffles and then a cough, but no fever. Just figure it was allergies from our crazy weather of wind and vog (volcanic smoke), hot, cold, rain! So just had her start her Flonase – she’s still coughing but she’s much better now. My son had an itchy throat on Thursday and he had no school that day because it was a waiver day off. Friday I took him to urgent care because it was still itchy and uncomfortable – he had no fever, tested negative for strep and flu…so they said keep an eye on it and prescribed Tylenol and a cough expectorant. But he woke up yesterday with a 103 fever so his body is definitely something viral – I did a covid test on him and it’s negative also. 🤷🏻‍♀️. Both my kids have a three day weekend – lucky them, no school after the Super Bowl! But they are spending it trying to get better.
