+ Claire and her husband Tom, with their two kids move into a new house. But this house eats things so naturally Claire wants to move because what if the house wants to eat them? But Tom feels like this house could be a tool for them. So they stay until things get really crazy.

+ This story has it’s creepy and gory moments, but it wasn’t too scary that it freaked me out. Actually I was surprised that the more I read about this house eating things, I was like Claire and thought of the house like a house pet! This story was actually fun to read. The house had different tastes but it sure did love a dead body. Yikes! But it’s not only a house that ate things, when the house ate a person, even the memory of said person is erased from everyone not tied to the house. I thought that was really interesting and made me question a lot of decisions that Claire and Tom made. I also questioned was it the house making them more bloodthirsty or was it just them?

+ This is a horror story but I love how spot on this author captured Claire who went from being an artistic young woman, to now a wife and mother. It felt so relatable, down to the issues she had being married to Tom but never voiced out loud. I thought the ending was very interesting!

+~ I think I went into this one thinking I wouldn’t be able to read it at night, so I was surprised that it wasn’t that kind of horror. So halfway into the book I was expecting more horror and thrills and it wasn’t living up to my expectations in that sense, but it’s not a bad thing because I actually had fun reading this book.

Final Thoughts:

This one has its creepy and gory moments but it’s also kind of funny. How did I end up being scared of a house and then in the end kind of sympathize and care about it? That’s what happened while I read this very interesting and usual horror story. I actually want to read more of this type of horror, so I look forward to see what this author writes next.

World Building: Set in present day, Los Angeles, Anya is half white and Filipino, struggling to become an actress. She gets a job offer by a powerful family in the movie industry, that pays good, but the job is a little strange. Anya loves the perks of being on the inside though even if she’s basically a baby-sitter for a grown man. I really enjoyed Anya’s Filipino family that was represented. But another thing is happening in this story, there are murders happening around Los Angeles, and Anya might somehow gotten herself tangled in the middle of it all. So there is a very dark undercurrent to this story.

Characters: Anya is a morally gray character who is trying to break into the movie industry but also dealing with feelings of inadequacy because her mom expects more from her. But we learn just how far she will go to see her dreams come true. I also liked how she had a complicated relationship with her mom and how that plays out. Jude, is a very mystery character – but is he a killer? We are in his thoughts and head a lot, which got confusing because there are two voices in his head! There are other characters from the De Witt family that is central to this story.

Romance: I was not expecting any romance in this and it’s definitely not the kind that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside. I was kind of disgusted and scared for Anya at the same time. There is spice, but like I said, it’s a confusing situation because Anya is attracted to the mystery of Jude, but also enticed by his darkness because she thinks there is a darkness in her too.

Story: This story is wild, chaotic and weird. It’s a story about power and how much one will do for it. Was it easy to follow? No, not really. Because at times it felt like a fever dream! Of course so much is revealed at the end, but I couldn’t tell if Jude’s reality and his thoughts were something I could trust. And though I liked Anya, she would slip into delusions, as if her life was a movie script. I did like how the murder mystery is played out but again, it was not straight forward.

Narrator(s): It is dual narrators and both did such an amazing job, especially the male narrator who had to voice a mentally unstable character! He brought the right amount of crazy and creepiness to the character. The female narrator did so good with the Filipino accents, I felt like I was listening to my own family. I actually switched back and forth from ebook to audiobook and I have to say the audiobook really added something more to the story compared to when I just read it as an ebook.

Final Thoughts:

This was unique, strange, confusing, weird and not exactly for me. But did I listen to this audiobook to the end? Yes, because the narrators did a fantastic job keeping me interested and I had to find out who was committing the murders. There were some things I liked about the story, Anya trying to navigate her world as half white and half Filipino – and her complicated relationship with her mom. Trying to figure out Jude was a little harder. I enjoyed the murder mystery too but overall, I think people who want a story where that is a little out there will enjoy this one more than I did.

The Killing Rules is about a popular cheerleader named Harper who has a very dark and gruesome secret. She’s a monster, a blood beast. She kills bad men.

This story is a little bit gory, there is a murder mystery and but there is even a romance. I think the first half builds a bit slowly because of the mystery of Grayson’s dad being murdered and other murders that are occurring in town. Harper is living a double life as the popular girl and a killer, plus if her ex-friend/crush Grayson knew her secret he would look at her differently – it’s why she pushed him away when his dad was killed. Everything picks up in the second half where there are a few twists, like Harper isn’t the only one going around killing people – so who is it? Also we learn about blood beasts and hunters!

I liked Harper, she couldn’t control what she was and I kind of love that the monster in her only killed bad people. This story kinda gave me vibes and energy of the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Final Thoughts:

This had mystery, action, gore and romance. I liked how it explored friendship, family, and feminine rage. I also enjoyed the second half with the twist and turns. Definitely check this out if you like YA thrillers!

Gingerbread Bones is a young adult horror that definitely brought on the thrills and chills. It starts off a little slow with the world building – a group of delinquent teens are sent to the wilderness to be filmed for a reality show. The messed up part is the person who sent Georgie and Hamish (siblings) is their own step-mother who is some popular parenting influencer. That’s already messed up but things get worse and then the story really picks up.

The group is split up and then they realize someone or something is hunting them in these dark woods. There is a Hansel and Gretel twist to the story and it does not shy away from paranormal activity and horror. But even with those elements I found this to be a fun read because of the characters! Yes, they are teenagers and act like it but I didn’t find it annoying, I found it entertaining. They are all there for some petty and/or big crimes they have committed or their parents just want them to learn a lesson, but when they are put together there are some crazy interactions, some of them making me laugh out loud because they are all kind of losing it (I don’t blame them). Things get crazier when we realize what is hunting them and the ending is wild and climactic, exactly what I wanted from a young adult thriller.

I liked that this had a combination of mystery, thriller, suspense, even a tiny bit of romance, plus a close bond between two siblings. I enjoyed this one despite the slow start and this one has supernatural/paranormal elements so just go with it and try to suspend your belief.

Final Thoughts:

This one gave me some thrills and chills with the setting and the situation that the kids are put in. I enjoyed the drama between the characters and the wild ending was entertaining. It had a slow start but it does pick up nicely. This is a good one to read for fall when you are in a spooky book kind of mood!

World Building: The story is set in a contemporary world but with some fantasy because of the magic and deal with the devil the Winter Family has made. There is also a place called the Ruin which is where their magic comes from or something to that effect and I likened it to hell or the underworld. The Winters are wealthy and powerful and they are trying to hold onto that power, no matter the cost.

Characters: I love the complicated characters in the Winter Family. Told through Cecily, we see every aspect of her flawed family. Her mother who is like the queen of their family, her siblings who are more favored in their mother’s eyes. Her uncle Dorian and his family add to the dysfunction as well – and all of them have some kind of magical power because of the deal with the devil their ancestor made. Then there is Soren, a boy that the family killed to keep a secret, but he isn’t quite dead yet and has come back to cause havoc to the Winter family. Cecily herself is someone who loves her family, wants badly for her mom to love her as much as she loves her siblings, but also realizes how wrong her family is for wielding their power the way they do – yet Cecily will do the same if need be. It made for a lot of drama – fun drama though!

Romance: Cecily is the only one who can go into the Ruin and come back out, so it’s not a surprise that the boy she is falling for is dead and part of the Ruin. Soren wants revenge on her family, and Cecily knows her family isn’t good and she’s trying to uncover all the secrets but there are some hard choices that have to be made where Soren is concerned. I feel like the ending left it open for a book two and I hope there is one so I can see if Cecily and Soren’s romance progresses.

Story: I was very into this story. The Winters are trying to stay the top dog but lately it hasn’t been easy with so many scandals brewing. Most of them are not good people, and when their power starts to crack and someone starts murdering members of the family, it leads to a search for who is trying to kill them. I enjoyed the different magic each family member had, I thought it was unique. I enjoyed the complicated relationship between all of them, how they kind of despise one another but it’s family over everything and everyone. I liked the mystery and the suspense! There were some moments in the middle where it slowed down a little but it does pick up again. There are a few twists and the ending feels like it’s setting up for a book two, which I hope is the case.

Final Thoughts:

I thought this was a fun young adult story with magic, so much family secrets and drama, a murder mystery and even a little romance. I hope there is a book two!

World Building: Set in a small town, Dusty likes to keep to herself and her best friends until things.

Characters: Dusty’s mom left their family and it’s left a lingering trauma in Dusty but she tries to stay strong for her younger sister who she loves a lot. Dusty is known in town, and has a few popular friends, but she likes to keep to herself. I loved her relationship with her best friend Mali. There is also a boy named Will, who is a new kid and also keeps to himself, and he and Dusty make a connection. But there is also another boy named Eli who Dusty has a connection to also.

Romance: I thought for a moment this was going to be a love triangle but things are clearer near the end of the book. The romance between Will and Dusty is a very slow burn, with challenges coming between them. I was definitely waiting to see their relationship grow and see what direction it would go.

Story: I think for me, this story was too slow. I loved the paranormal elements, the vampires, but trying to figure out how they became vampires took awhile. Most of the story was about how Dusty acclimated to life as a new vampire. Things pick up and get very interesting at the 90% mark, and that was a little too late for me. Also the story ended abruptly, but I believe this is book one, so there will be a continuation to the story.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, this was an okay read for me. I loved Dusty and her story but the mystery of the vampirism and how it happens took too long to unfold, for me. I did like the small town setting and the sweet little romance brewing between Dusty and Will but even that was a slow burn.

World Building: The setting is inspired by ancient Rome, which was really intriguing. Unfortunately we don’t get to know much about the world except what happens in the conclave, where most of the story takes place. Though it is set in a place where select powerful people are secluded to conduct votes and business, it really made a good setting for this murder mystery story.

Characters: High Priestess Kerasea is a powerful woman but she’s hiding a dangerous secret. Torren is the head of the Praetorian guard and he is investigating a murder and one of his suspects is Kerasea. He has some conflicting feelings about her and the both of them are forced to be together in conclave, with a murderer on the loose taking out very powerful people. I really enjoyed Torren’s friend Julian, who I didn’t feel like I could trust though but that added to the tension and mystery.

Romance: The romance is a slow burn. Yes there are some feelings between Torren and Kerasea, mostly because he hates her but also is obsessed with her. Kerasea can feel his animosity but there is a murderer to catch. The tension grows between them, especially since they don’t know if they can trust one another. There is a spicy scene at the end which was nice because the tension was building but their positions of power are really complicated so it will be interesting to see what happens between them.

Story: This is a murder mystery so everyone is suspect, which was kind of fun. There were some slow parts but I chalk that up to being a mystery, which usually moves slowly but everything picks up in the second half. Also, I thought Kerasea’s secret was intriguing and cannot wait to learn more and see what happens with her character. There is a cliffhanger ending though that definitely makes me want to read book two.

Vibes: who dunnit but Roman inspired

Final Thoughts:

I haven’t read a murder mystery like this in awhile where it’s a who dunnit in a closed setting and it’s even more interesting because it happens in a Roman setting and during a conclave. The tension between Kera and Torren adds to the atmosphere plus Kerasea’s secret. The ending is a cliffhanger and I will definitely be reading book two.

I saw this on Kindle Unlimited and saw it was dark academia and took a chance on it. Here are my thoughts:

~ Right off the bat, I will say this book did not have to be 1026 pages – although on my ipad where I was reading it, it said 703 pages. This book didn’t have to be anything above 350 pages, or less. I really wish someone took a scalpel to this story and I don’t mean that in a bad way. There was a story but it was hard to find it with all the extra fluff.

+ The things I did like? Summer is a Freshman at Avalon University – lots of different species go there: fae, angels, vampires, shifters, sorcerers, etc…they are there to hone their magic. So I expected the typical dark academia story and we do get that: there is sex, there is romance, there is drama and also a serial killer? I liked Summer’s (a fae) new friendship with Alice (a vampire), and seeing them grow into best-friends. I liked the Morningstar brothers, especially Connor who becomes Summer’s boyfriend – he’s good and a he’s a golden retriever. I even liked some of the silly relationship drama. A lot of this story made me laugh because some things were getting ridiculous!

~ But why are these characters 27-30 years old and act like teenagers? Why didn’t they just make them 18-21? There was no need to make them older unless it’s because of the spicy scenes? 🤷🏻‍♀️. Speaking of characters – there is a mystery character that I hope will be revealed in book two.

+~ Summer, the FMC, has a secret past. It’s so secret and troubling for her, she doesn’t even want to talk about being a Fae. Apparently their realm has been wiped off the face of the planet or realm world. So we basically learn nothing about her. I know she loves sex with Connor, because they have it every other chapter and there is….almost 80+ chapters?! She loves when men think she is hot, even though she loves Connor. She does love Alice, and that was a relationship I did like seeing grow. She has power she hasn’t tapped into yet. But yeah…I was fine that she was needy and needed attention, but…I wish their relationship didn’t drag out for 700 pages.

~ The romance started out cute. Connor is a good guy, and I think he’s why I kept reading because a good guy like him is hard to find in books. He’s a unicorn – he doesn’t get jealous? Like…what? And look I like my MMC’s bad, and filled with trauma…so Connor was actually refreshing. Maybe boring, but I thought it was cute how much he loved Summer. And okay so she’s never been loved and he has the perfect family full of love, but what was up with her flirting with other guys? If that’s the case, then make it a reverse-harem! Let her explore, let Connor be open to it …but that’s not how this story goes and this girl is making emotional connections with someone online she calls Stranger? Just…NO. Even though he sounds intriguing. I was ready to be all in on Connor and Summer’s love story if she just didn’t search for more, in other guys. Connor was done dirty and he didn’t deserve it. But the romance was 95% of this book! It’s about Connor and Summer dating, having lots of sex, and moving on to talking about marriage. Also, Summer’s nickname for Connor is “Big Guy” and she says it a lot. I didn’t mind him calling her Babe all the time, but the Big Guy was said way too much. Another issue I had…the spicy scenes, it was quantity over quality. This story made me wish for a good quality, creative, steamy scene instead of all the ones we got.

~ So there is a mystery serial killer on the loose? Nothing much happens with that storyline except halfway into the book, and a little more at the end. There is no urgency and Summer is always leaving the safety of her dorm, to venture out for a jog alone even though she knows someone is out there killing girls that look like her. The story could have been tighter and maybe the threat of a killer more thrilling if a lot of the fluff was cut out.

+ Speaking of Connor – the ending is emotional, and I was surprised how much I felt about him, since I almost DNF’d the book a few times. Why didn’t I DNF? I actually wanted to see if something would happen in the story, other than the romance portion of the story. 😅 And the story is so easy to consume since it’s light on the world-building. Also maybe I wanted to torture myself and couldn’t believe how many times this couple had spicy scenes or how many times Summer said Big Guy so I had to see it through to the end. 😂

Final Thoughts:

This story needed major editing, because it didn’t need to be as long as it is. I also needed more depth from the characters and it would be nice if they acted their age (which is supposed to be late 20’s/early thirties). I kept reading because I wanted to see if something would actually happen with the serial killer, but most of this book was about Summer and Connor’s romance which moved fast and had spicy scenes every other chapter. Yet, I was bored with the spice. And then Summer talking to other guys and flirting with them even though she is so in love with Connor? Yeah….poor Connor. My 2.5 stars goes to Connor, the friendship with Alice and the ending where we finally get some action. It does end with a cliffhanger though…so am I reading book two? Most likely – but will I DNF it if it is as long as this one and she’s trying to figure out how she feels about three guys, then maybe! 😅.

+ This story hooked me right away! Vic and Henry has been on the run since their mother, a powerful witch, was murdered. But now The Order have found them and want Henry to study at Avalon Castle, where other witches are admitted there for training and learning. But while Henry has found his place there, Vic, has to figure out where she belongs. I like the dark academia and the witches learning about their powers, and how to fight different monsters. I also like the friendships Vic make at the school.

+ My favorite part of this story I think are the monsters! The monsters are creepy, scary and brought so much suspense and even a little horror. I loved it.

+ I also like the secrets and betrayals in this story. The Order has an enemy, The Brotherhood, and the leaders of both used to be friend’s with Vic’s mother. Now tensions have ramped up ever since Vic has come to the castle so I thought it was interesting to see how she tied into everything.

+~ There is romance but not much spice, and I think the romance took a backseat, which was fine. But I would love to see more between Xan and Vic. I wanted more banter and chemistry.

~ Vic and Henry are siblings and there are times we see their relationship but it’s clear that they are drifting apart. Henry wants her to leave to castle for safety, but Vic wants to be there to protect him. But from the beginning I didn’t feel a strong bond between them.

Final Thoughts:

I enjoyed this one, especially the action filled parts where Vic encounters these scary monsters around the castle! I wasn’t expecting the creepy, horror and suspenseful vibes, but I loved it. I liked seeing Vic grow as a character and the ending makes me definitely want to find out what will happen in book two!

I thought this book had much more action than book one, Dead Fake. I enjoyed that it was fast paced and had a zombie coming after a bunch of kids in a mall!

I still think I’m not the right audience for this series because I’m older and yes, it reminds me of R.L. Stine Goosebumps, but again, I have just grown out of it.

But I think teens would enjoy this series.
