Content Warning:

I’m sad I didn’t love this one and I think it’s because nothing about Alessandra or Dominic was intriguing to me even though when they appeared in the two previous books very briefly I was quite interested in their story.

It’s clear these two love each other very much and maybe the marriage in trouble trope just bored me. I get that Dominic worked too much and put his job first but he had issues from the past that made him want to achieve everything. Thing is I didn’t find him very interesting – his brother Roman was more intriguing! Alessandra was just okay too.

I actually loss interest 30% in and skimmed the rest or else I would have DNF’ed it. I just wish there was more drama and spark between them.

My Final Thoughts:

This one is my least favorite of the Kings of Sins series but I’m still going to read King of Sloth though.

This is a very popular series on Kindle Unlimited and I wanted to see why. I had a copy of this book for almost half a year now and I could not get past the first few chapters – but I made a vow to finish it even if I had to skim it by the end of 2023 so I finally did it!

What an interesting world of “saddles” and King Midas. Auren lives in a cage and her owner/lover is King Midas. In this first book there seems to be nothing that appeals to me about Auren or King Midas. This is definitely a starter book that lays out the setting and characters and nothing much else. There isn’t even much romance in it because I don’t know what Auren and Midas have going on but I feel no connection. I think it got interesting when she left her cage and I’m sure her character growth gets better in the next few books but this one did nothing for me.

I don’t think I’ll be continuing on with the series unless I have nothing else to read or someone can tell me why I should continue with the series in the comments below!

I wanted to read something creepy and look at this cover – it’s totally creepy. This is what I thought of the story:

+ I like the four different main characters. Four girls, who’s mothers are gone/missing or dead – the town assumes they are dead. So these four girls: Bo, Whitney, Jude and Delilah all live together and basically are trying to move on with their lives. They had distinct personalities and their lives are intertwined with certain events that culminated at a bon fire party. There is a big mystery in this story and these girls are the ones trying to figure out what is going on. I like the feminism theme in the story

+ The town of Bishop is strange. Women and girls go missing or end up dead every few months – but why? There is no “hospital” even though one of the girls had to be brought to one. There are the Harding boys who seem like they are the popular boys in school who can get whatever they want, but what they is to mess with these girls. There are these random storms or tornados but they are in a small town so that doesn’t seem totally mysterious…or is it? And what’s with the sunflowers?

~ A few things didn’t work for me – I was thrown into the story and left to figure things out. And it took me awhile to care about what was going on in this town. All I knew was that the boys were awful and two of the girls were in love with one of these awful boys, and that sucked. I knew right away this town was killing it’s women, but why? And why didn’t anyone else in town care about missing women?

~ I’ve read a few books similar to this but I don’t think I enjoyed the execution of this one. Everything is a big mystery but it didn’t creep me out as much as I wanted it to and it had all the potential to do so. I didn’t know what the connection was to the tornados, sunflowers and missing women and when the mystery is revealed I wasn’t super surprised. I wanted to know more about the town and get a better feel for the people, even the villains. I just wanted more from the story and I wanted to be spooked. Sunflower fields and a strange, small town with missing women has such a big potential to scare me, but this didn’t.

  • you like lite-horror and magical realism
  • the feminism message in the story

Why you might not want to read it:

  • didn’t scare me enough
  • slow start

My Thoughts:

This one didn’t work for me. I liked the concept and I like the creepy town, and the sunflowers fields, but it wasn’t as scary as I was expecting. I also feel like the story just didn’t flow easily. The bright spot for me in the story is the one about the girls working together to figure out why the women were going missing. The girls survive what is coming for them together, which is awesome, especially because it is such a dark story.

This one is a DNF for me. I love the cover and I enjoyed some other books from this author but this one just wasn’t doing it for me. Here’s what I thought:

+ Interesting concept, was intrigued about the Forest and mysterious island.

~ I felt no connection to the characters and kept wondering what is happening and wishing the story would move faster.

~ I think it would appeal to teen readers. For me, I just wanted more. I was bored and didn’t want to struggle to finish it.

  • too slow and wasn’t keeping my attention

I tried many times to finish this book but I think it was clear I was just not interested and it wasn’t for me. I think this will still appeal to young adult fantasy fans though.

This is the second book in the Avalon Bay series, and I enjoyed the first one, Good Girl Complex, a lot so was definitely going to read this one. Sadly, I wasn’t into Evan and Gen’s story like I was with Cooper and Mac. Here’s what did and didn’t work for me:

+ The beginning of the story is good – we get to know Gen and Evan and their history. Obviously these two cannot stay away from one another as much as they try. The physical attraction is undeniable but then the feelings part is when the trouble begins. They both have issues.

+ Gen has a lot going on and I do see growth. Evan also has some things to work on when it comes to Gen and his mom, Shelley.

+ Cooper and Mac make cameos in the story. Cooper doesn’t like Evan and Gen together but the heart wants what it wants!

~ I think I got bored with the story. It’s repetitive. It’s a constant back and forth between Evan and Gen, and the sexual attraction is easy for them. Everything else is hard. I think it felt flat on the emotional side of their relationship. They are also a bit toxic for one another. So I wasn’t invested with the second chance romance. Gen tries to date someone else, but we all know who is end game, so it felt like a waste of time.

~ I didn’t connect to any of the characters.

Why you should read it:

  • you might like this better than the first one if you like second chance romances

Why you might not want to read it:

  • it hit a lull in the middle and never managed to suck me back into the story

My Thoughts:

This one was just okay. I did like Good Girl Complex more because it was the rich girl/poor boy trope. If you like second chance romances with a lot of spice, you will enjoy this one, because one thing is for sure and that is Gen and Evan can’t keep their hands off one another.

Content Warning: Drug Use

I absolutely struggled through this one which is the opposite experience I had with book one of this series. I read the first book in 2 days! This one…I could barely finish, it’s taken me a month and I basically skimmed it to the end.

What didn’t work for me? You have to suspend your belief A LOT for this one, and as much as I tried, I couldn’t do it. I don’t know if it was because of my reading mood – I wasn’t in the mood for slapstick humor? Meddy is getting married to Nathan and flies to Oxford, England for the wedding – her aunts and mom bring the chaos as usual and this time they’ve hired wedding planners/vendors to help them. What they don’t know is this family of wedding planners has a sinister motive for helping them with this wedding. When they do find out these planners/vendors are not who they say they are – it is straight chaos until the end of the story.

The aunties that made me laugh in book one, made me cringe a lot in this one. They try to learn how to talk like the British and it’s kinda funny at first but the more it keeps going on, it’s just tiring. It’s even more chaotic than book one and this all takes place at Meddy’s wedding! It was too much chaos for me. I wanted Meddy to take control of the situation and obviously she does not know how to do that. Plus she’s lying to her fiance/husband for 90% of the story. It’s supposed to be her special day, couldn’t she have told Nathan at least?

Some things I appreciated about the story? The Indo-Chinese represenation like in book one. No matter how crazy Meddy’s family is – she loves them.

  • you love chaotic, ridiculous, zany stories with slapstick humor
  • Meddy’s Aunts and mom are wild haha

Why you might not want to read it:

  • not in the mood for chaos

My Thoughts:

I really enjoyed the first book and I wish I stopped there. You will enjoy this story if you want more of the chaos Meddy’s Aunts and her mother brings…they bring it even more in this sequel. Unfortunately, I couldn’t suspend my belief enough to enjoy the wild ride this story took me on.
