Just a story of course, a fairy tale, one Mira had stopped believing in when she was youngโjust like she stopped believing in the idea of her mom returning, after she up and left without a trace when she was only thirteen.
Mira is grown up now, starting freshman year at the nearby Lakeland University. College feels normal, exactly the thing sheโs been craving most… except for one particular classmate: Julian Santos, a mysterious boy with long hair, golden eyes, and a coldness that seems directed exclusively at Mira for reasons she canโt understand and he wonโt explain.

She suspects her mom might be telling the truth when she stumbles across strange animal tracks on a hiking trail, and when sheโs miraculously saved from a twenty foot drop by the one and only, Julian Santos.
The problem? Julian would have had to jump the length of the cliff to catch her, making him incredibly fast and strong beyond belief. When she confronts him about this, he denies everything.
But when a Blood Moon rises, Mira soon finds herself caught in the middle of an ancient, magical war, with Julian on the other side of the line. She discovers thereโs much more truth to the old town legends than she could ever have anticipatedโand her familyโs historic role in it will change her world forever.

From the author of the โexciting, suspenseful, horrifyingโ (Stephen King) Fever House, a Vietnam veteran and his adopted niece huntโand are hunted byโthe vampire that slaughtered their family.
Itโs the winter of 1975, and Portland, Oregon, is all sleet and neon. Duane Minor is back home after a tour in Vietnam, a bartender just trying to stay sober; save his marriage with his wife, Heidi; and connect with his thirteen-year-old niece, Julia, now that heโs responsible for raising her. Things arenโt easy, but Minor is scraping by.
Then a vampire walks into his bar and ruins his life.
When Minor crosses John Varley, a killer who sleeps during the day beneath loose drifts of earth and grows teeth in the light of the moon, Varley brutally retaliates by murdering Heidi, leaving Minor broken with guilt and Julia filled with rage. Whatโs left of their splintered family is united by only one desire: vengeance.
So begins a furious, frenzied pursuit across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. From grimy alleyways to desolate highways to snow-lashed plains, Minor and Julia are cast into the dark orbit of undead children, silver bullet casters, and the bevy of broken men transfixed by Varleyโs ferocity. Everyoneโs out for blood.
Gritty, unforgettable, and emotionally devastating, Coffin Moon asks what will be left of our humanity when grief transmutes into violence, when monsters wear human faces, and when our thirst for revenge eclipses everything else.
In the grimly captivating sequel to Anathema, Maevyth and Zevander must navigate the perilous mortal lands to deliver Zevander from the clutches of an ancient, malevolent power that threatens to shatter both worlds.
An eldritch magic has awakened, turning the mortal world darker. Colder. Famished. With flesh-eating monsters and a sinister curse spreading like a plague, the last glimmer of humanity in Foxglove Parish has long-since faded.
For Maevyth and Zevander, the only chance of escape is through The Eating Woods. But fate has woven a new web, tangling the threads of destiny, and crossing the mystical boundary to Aethyria might not be so simple.
As the bones of Maevythโs past are unearthed, and truths unravel with unsettling clarity, the possibility of never leaving Mortasia is becoming more of a reality. Unfortunately for Zevander, time is running out. The longer he stays in the mortal lands, deprived of essential vivicantem, the more he succumbs to the encroaching specter of madness.
Or maybe those chasing shadows are someone hunting him. A wretched evil closing in, threatening to pull him into the darkest corners of his mind.
Only, this time, Maevyth may not have the power to save him.

Two feuding co-stars in a Jane Austen film adaptation accidentally travel back in time to the Regency Era in this delightfully clever and riotously funny debut
Tess Bright just scored her dream role starring in an adaptation of Jane Austenโs Northanger Abbey. It’s not just the role of a lifetime, but itโs also her last chance to prove herself as a serious actress (no easy feat after being fired from her last TV gig) and more importantly, itโs her opportunity to honor her mom, who was the biggest fan of Jane Austen ever. But one thing is standing in Tessโs wayโwell, one very tall, annoyingly handsome person, actually: Hugh Balfour.
A serious British method actor, Hugh wants nothing to do with Tess (whose Teen Choice Awards somehow donโt quite compare to his BAFTA nominations). Hugh is a type-A, no-nonsense, Royal Academy prodigy, whereas Tess is big-hearted, a little reckless, and admittedly, kind of a mess. But the film needs chemistryโand Tessโs career depends on it.
Sparks fly, but not in the way Tess hoped, when an electrical accident sends the two feuding co-stars back in time to Jane Austenโs era. 200 years in the past with only each other to rely on, Tess and Hugh need to ad-lib their way through the Regency period in order to make it back home, and hopefully not screw up history along the way. But if a certain someone looks particularly dashing in those 19th century breechesโฆwell, Tess wonโt be complaining.
A wickedly funny, delightfully charming story, The Austen Affair is a tribute to Jane Austen, second chances, and love across the space-time continuum.
Content Warning: grief, illness
+ Tess has scored a role in the movie, Northanger Abbey, the story written by the famous Jane Austen. Thing is she and her co-star, Hugh, do not get along. He is grumpy and she is sunshine. When something happens to make them time-travel into the past (Jane Austen’s past), they have to learn to put those acting skills to the test and pretend they are engaged!
+ I love Tess and Hugh’s interactions as they travel to the past and try to convince people they aren’t imposters. Their personalities are such opposites and it was fun to see them try to navigate regency England. I love a Jane Austen inspired story!
+ It’s a funny, quick read but also had some themes dealing with grief.
~ I thought their plan to get back home was so random! But kind of funny and lent to the whole light-hearted, rom-com elements.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, I thought this was a cute read and definitely for the Jane Austen fans!

Until tumbling from the pyramid becomes the least of Ellaโs worries. Because instead of hitting the mat, she’s falling hard for the quarterback. . .
Content Warning:
+ Ella is a cheerleader from England who goes to Whitland in Nashville, Tennessee. Along with the culture shock, which hasn’t really fazed her, he boyfriend of a few years dumped her and then she has a one-night stand with the star quarterback at Whitland. I thought Ella was a cool character, typical college girl going through the growing pains of relationships and school.
+~ The romance is a one-night stand to friends to lovers. There is a lot of back and forth between Ella and Hudson, which was not my favorite of the romance. I do think their relationship is relatable because it’s set in college and young love can start and end so fast. There is spice but because these two kept things mostly casual throughout the book I didn’t quite connect to their romance.
+ I enjoyed the cheer parts of the book and it gave me flashbacks to Netflix’s show Cheer (where the star cheerleader was a girl named Gabi haha – there is a Gabi in this book also, coincidentally). I thought Ash was an intriguing character.
~ The conflict that comes at the end of the book was minor and it didn’t feel like the big deal, Ella made it out to be. It was resolved with communication.
Final Thoughts:
This was a light, sports romance and a very quick read. I don’t feel like I connected much to the characters, because of the back and forth and miscommunication but I did enjoy all the cheer aspects to the story – I thought that was interesting and fun! Overall, this was not for me but if you like sports romance, you might enjoy this one.
+ It’s September! So that means I had to spend some time getting my car maintenance done and safety check. I waited about 3 hours but at least I got to sit and read!
+ Football (NFL) is back! And the Philadelphia Eagles won their first game, so I’m happy.
The Summer I Turned Pretty (Amazon Prime Video)– Season 3 – a boring episode, but it made me dislike Jere even MORE.

Snort! Kendra jolted awake, her face pressed against the cool window shade. She forced a cough to clear her throat, her cheeks coloring as she realized sheโd been snoring. Her eyes darted around to see if anyone in the neighboring seats had heard, and she rushed to wipe the side of her mouth, checking for drool. No one in the row in front of her seemed to have noticed anything, and she was thankful that most of the first- class passengers were wearing noise-canceling headphones and watching in-flight movies.
Pull yourself together, girl. Taking a deep breath, she covered her face with the palms of her hands, willing herself awake.
The sweet woman next to her patted her arm with a chuckle. โYou must have been tired, dear. You missed the meal and everything!โ
Thank god I didnโt have to pay for this upgrade. Kendra yawned and nodded in agreement. โIโve traveled quite a bit in the past two weeks. Iโm looking forward to a good nightโs sleep.โ I could honestly go back to sleep right now.
โAre you heading home?โ
Home.
She smiled tightly. โYeah, something like that.โ Truth was, sheโd been a tumbleweed for the past two years. Home was wherever she decided to rest her head, though sheโd been craving a place to plant her rootsโsomething she hadnโt been sure sheโd ever do when she left. And she never fathomed that sheโd have a desire to return to the US to do so.
A chime sounded before a flight attendant spoke over the loudspeaker. โLadies and gentlemen, we have begun our de- scent into Reagan Washington National Airport. As we pre- pare for landing, please make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright and locked position. Your lap- tops should be put away and . . .โ
Kendra offered a small smile to her neighbor. โAre you returning home?โ
The woman shook her head, the scent of her gourmand perfume wafting over Kendra in waves of vanilla and toffee. โMy daughterโs. Sheโs going to be induced next week. My fourth grandbaby!โ She grinned with pride and rummaged through her purse, which she cradled in her lap protectively.
โAw, congratulations! Thatโs so exciting.โ A cell phone was shoved in her face, showing three smiling kids, two missing their front teeth. โTheyโre very cute.โ
Once they landed and arrived at the gate, Kendra helped her row mate with her bag and headed toward baggage claim as her phone pinged with a text message.
Lani: Is you here yet?? Inquiring minds (aka your nosy brother and your parents) want to know . . .
Kendra: The eagle has landed.
Lani: Tuh! I know you havenโt returned from Gulliverโs travels with a big ass head SMH. Make sure you look like somethin before you waltz your ass up in here . . .
She rolled her eyes and sent her cousin a middle finger emoji before tucking her phone into her pocket. Returning home hit different now that Kendra was deemed a failureโit felt like tucking tail and admitting defeat after desperately trying to carve an uncharted path with nothing but hope and a blunt instrument. Whether anyone would admit it, the hushed tones of the family whisper network turned up the volume on every inadequacy and failed attempt, and once again the grumblings shone a spotlight directly onto Kendra. Always the fucking black sheep.
Kendra sighed, muttering to herself as she approached her fifth red light in a row. โNow theyโll get to harp on the fact that Iโm late.โ She glanced at the clock on her dashboard and shook her head with annoyance.
Having run home just long enough to drop off her suit- case and pick up her car, sheโd rushed back out before her family started blowing up her phone. DC traffic was only predictable in that it was inevitable, and finding parking was next to impossible. Sometimes, the search for parking took as long as the commute. That never stopped Kendra from wanting to driveโyes, one could take the Metro or ride- share to a destination, but that meant having to depend on too many outside variables when she was ready to leaveโ she was too much of a control freak to depend on the time- liness of others, and when she wanted to go, she wanted to go. Waiting on others to do what she was more than capable of doing herself drove her up the wall. Being the baby in the family didnโt mean that she was any less capable than Big Bro.
Being away from home for two years left her second- guessing directions and she cursed under her breath as she missed her exit from the same traffic circle twice. At some point, people enjoying the park would begin to think she was casing the neighborhood. Kendra bit her lip, her eyes widen- ing as a car sped into the lane to her right as she attempted to maneuver over to catch the exit on her third try. She slid into the lane behind the Prius that had come out of nowhere and finally made the right turn out of the roundabout from hell.
Kendra zipped through the congestion on Rhode Island Avenue, having dropped all of her belongings off at the English basement apartment below her brotherโs row house. The family golden boy. Logan had stopped offering the basement as a vacation rental when Kendra announced her return to town, and sheโd eagerly agreed to help launch his new business for a month or two of free rent. Her best friend and cousinโs name appeared on the center console screen of Kendraโs Audi Q3, and she pressed a button on her steering wheel to answer her phone via the carโs Bluetooth system as she stopped at a traffic light. โHey, girl, hey!โ
โYouโre late, you know,โ Lani quipped in a hushed tone, evoking an immediate eye roll out of Kendra. โEveryoneโs waiting for you to make an appearance! Logan said he hasnโt even seen you yet.โ
โYeah, thatโs the beauty of smart locksโthereโs no longer a need for me to knock on Loganโs front door and ask for a key to his basement. Itโs bad enough that the prodigal child has to return and immediately ask her big brother for help for the umpteenth time.โ Kendra chewed on her bottom lip, willing her face to express less of her reluctance to come back to the DMV area. It wasnโt that she didnโt love DCโshe didโit was just that she was always hidden by Loganโs shadow. It wasnโt his fault, and Kendra looked up to Big Bro for everything he was able to accomplish, but sometimes his success sucked up all of the oxygen in the room.
โNow, donโt be dramatic, Keke,โ Lani chided in her sing- songy voice.
Kendra bristled at her childhood nickname. โAnd remind me again why you couldnโt just let me come and stay at your place? You know that Iโm not above bumming it on a couch.โ
Lani tsked nonchalantly. โCome on, girl, no one should be subjected to that much sex. Canโt have you telling my aunt and uncle about my sexcapades. Your mom already thinks Iโm too fast anyway.โ
Kendra smirked. You are. โShe already knows youโre fast, heffa.โ
โYou told her?!โ Laniโs hushed growl made Kendra cackle. โYou really donโt remember trying to sneak a boy into our house when you were staying with us for spring break?โ Sheโd been grounded for the rest of high school and subjected to regular lectures about the birds and the bees. Auntie Mack refused to be a grandmother early, so she made herself an impactful prophylactic. Logan and all the boy cousins were tasked with looking out for Lani and Kendra, as if the lot werenโt all
pussy-whipped themselves.
โUh, that was a teenage mistake. Does Auntie Al think Iโm fast too? You havenโt told her anything recent, right?โ Laniโs whispering was more of an exasperated shout with the volume turned down. โIf she thinks Iโm up to anything, sheโll tell my mom, and then Iโll never hear the end of it.โ
โGirl, your mom has known since you started wearing all that eyeliner in middle school,โ Kendra chuckled. โAnd that mulberry lipstick? You thought you were serving. Youโd hit โem with the duck lips and hands on your hips anytime some- one tried to take a picture.โ
Lani groaned. โShut up, thereโs a difference between duck lips and a smize. And thought? Bitch, I was stuntinโ on them hos.โ
Kendra could practically hear the hair flip on the other side
of the line. โMmmkay, well, back to what I was saying. I could be at your place hearing sex-foolery, but instead Iโm up under Logan . . . again.โ Thankfully there was a main floor between Kendraโs unit and her brotherโs bedroom, so she was absolved from having to hear his sexcapades, but still.
โWell, but itโs only temporary, and besides, the savings is
good for you while youโre still in the planning stages of opening up your own spot.โ
โWhy must you be reasonable?โ Kendra whined. Every- thing Lani said was true, but the closer she got to the bistro location that Logan and his wife, Shonda, were opening together, the more Kendraโs stomach performed a Simone Bilesโ level floor exerciseโone of those extra good ones that would eventually be named after her because no one else could perfect it the way she could.
โOne of us has to be reasonable, so suck it up, buttercup. Now, whatโs your ETA?โ Lani was resistant to Kendraโs shitโ she had a no-nonsense approach to pretty much everything and didnโt believe in coddling unless she needed it herself. It didnโt help that, as cousins born two weeks apart, theyโd been best friends since they shared a playpen. Lani knew all of Kendraโs tactics.
โIโm about to park. Give me a minute or two to gather myself, and then Iโll be in.โ Well, maybe five minutes.
โBet. Oh, and be careful when you walk in here, Kekeโ
Stanley just waxed the floors.โ
โNoted.โ Kendra steered her car into the first open parking spot. โIโll be in there in a few.โ
โโKay, bye.โ
The phone disconnected, and Kendra took a deep breath. What is awaiting me inside? She cursed herself for not asking who all would be present to help put the finishing touches on the restaurant before its opening in a few days. As she closed her eyes to meditate, her phone rang again. She jabbed at the button on her steering wheel. โWe literally just hung up, Lani.โ
โWell, donโt sit out in your car forever either. Someone already mentioned that they saw you pull up.โ
Kendra rolled her eyes, kissing her teeth. โGet off my phone, maโam. I need a sec.โ Leave me be!
Lani dropped her voice to a gruff whisper. โBring yoโ ass
in here, ho. A certain someone been askinโ about you.โ She drew out the last word teasingly. โTake a fuckinโ hint,โ she whispered through gritted teeth.
Kendraโs face scrunched up as her head tilted, her mind racing to run through the list of everyone she expected to be present in these final days of prep before the big launch. โWho?โ
โMr. Big and Sexy, the chocolate drop himself.โ
Huh? Kendra blew out a breath loudly, pinching the bridge of her nose. โCousin, that description applies to half of the brothas in the DMV. Can you be more specific?โ
โIf you donโt carry your behind on You know what?
We donโt have time for this.โ Laniโs hushed tone changed to a loud call. โHey, look, yโall. I think thatโs Kekeโs car right there!โ Voices in the background converged into a jumble drowned out by a peal of villainous laughter.
Iโm gonna kill her. โLani!โ Kendra snapped as the call disconnected. So much for a moment of peace. She inhaled deeply, exhaling through her mouth before wiping the scowl from her face and climbing out of the car into a light breeze that made her pull her coat lapels closer to her neck. She flung her tote bag over her shoulder as she crossed the narrow side street to enter the front door of the brightly lit restaurant with a giant banner and the word PALATE set between a set of cutlery. โHere we go,โ she muttered.
As Kendra stepped onto a narrow welcome mat just inside the glass door, which had been propped open to allow in the sharp almost-spring air, the scents of fresh paint and oranges wafted toward her. She peered around the dining room in search of the chocolate drop Lani was hinting about, making eye contact with her brother, Logan, and her sister-in-law, Shonda, whose face brightened as she headed toward the end of the bar to show some love. โHey, you made it!โ
โYeah, I . . . whoa shit!โ Kendra took one step forward and slipped, fully expecting to be met with the well-polished lacquered hardwood when a pair of strong arms wrapped around her and righted her, the warmth of a large hand imprinting the small of her back as her legs wobbled. โRight, careful with the floors . . . Thanks,โ she laughed with embarrassment.
โBeen a long time, Kenny,โ a gravelly baritone voice caused her head to jerk upward. His sturdy six-foot frame drew closer, holding her against his hip so that she could steady herself. The scents of smoky oud and tobacco emanated from his skin. Kendra gulped as her eyes widened. Damn, he got even finer.
BJ Stephens glowered at her curiously, the same way he had when they were teenagers, and Kendraโs cheeks warmed as she took in his smooth umber skin. Sheโd never seen him in jeans and work boots before, but the look suited him.
โHey, B, long time. How you been?โ She reached up to wrap her arms around his neck as his wound around her waist. As she turned her head to peck his cheek, he moved slightly and her lips landed at the angle of his jaw, just below his ear, his closely-groomed beard soft against her skin. Her eyes bulged as she stepped back, unsure whether heโd think she tried to kiss his neck on purpose. Clumsy and awkward . . . weโre off to a great start. She made space between them, willing her cheeks not to broadcast her embarrassment. She cleared her throat before looking up at him.
BJโs dark, spectacled eyes trained on her, his expression unreadable. โGood. But youโre the one whoโs been gone. How were your travels? Last I heard, you were cooking your way through Asia and Europe.โ
Kendra beamed, nodding. โI loved every minute of it. Ap- prenticed under a few chefs, caught up with a few cousins when I hit Thailand and the Philippines. Collected a ton of cooking techniques and recipes. Made some new friends and gave a few lessons on Creole cooking.โ
โYou didnโt make new friends at the expense of old ones, I hope.โ The corners of his mouth twitched, drawing Kendraโs attention to his full lips. It always took a lot to make BJ smile. A laugh was even more rare but craveable. As long as Kendra had known her brotherโs best friend, she never was good at reading him. Once in a while, heโd allow his face to show his playfulness, but most of the time, his underwhelmed, almost gruff expression remained constant. Joy, painโeven annoyanceโwere less common expressions than the general grumpy-observer vibe he gave off. But behind the prickly mask was an intelligent, loyal, good human who often put others before himself.
โNever that,โ she laughed. Theyโd known each other for over two decadesโever since her family had relocated from New Orleans to the nationโs capital. Kendra had been in middle school, and Logan was just about to start high school. He met BJ his first day of classes, and they became fast friends after almost coming to blows over the attentions of the same girl. Logan had brought BJ home for some of Mommaโs cooking to make amends, and the rest was historyโMomma won over many hearts with her Creole family recipes, and BJโs was no exception. Logan had been lucky. Truth be told, BJ would have whooped his ass.
BJ was a gym rat to the core, but as focused as he was on macros to build muscle mass, he made two exceptions without question: Mommaโs cookinโ and good whiskey. As he solidified his place within the familyโs inner circle, heโd always been the one to mediate Kendraโs arguments with her brotherโa dependable voice of reason who wasnโt quick to pick sides.
Kendra and Logan never fought physicallyโMomma would never allow thatโbut Kendra would cut to the white meat with her words, and when she went low, Logan went straight to the depths of hell. โYou still enjoying the professor life? I heard you were awarded tenure while I was out of the country. Congratulations are in order! I was really excited to hear the news. Youโve worked so hard to get to this place.โ
His head bobbed as he smoothed a hand over his facial hair. The top half of his dark, shoulder-length locs were twisted and tied back away from his face as he regarded her intently. โThanks! Yeah, itโs been good so far, but Iโm on sabbatical this semester. I need to do some research for my next book proposal.โ
BJ taught courses on historic preservation, focusing on heritage conservation, architectural history and preservation, urban planning, and adaptive reuse. Most of it went over Ken- draโs head, but she loved that he focused a good amount of his work on Black heritage tourism. The way that he highlighted the importance of transforming abandoned sites to frame and highlight pivotal points in history had always been a source of inspiration for her.
Kendra tilted her head. โAbout that, actually, maybe I can pick your brain about something later. Iโve got something brewing businesswise, and itโs right up your alley.โ She tapped his arm with her fingers and admired the results that his hard work in the gym had developed.
BJโs eyebrows rose, but Lani slid across the floor Risky Businessโstyle right into Kendraโs arms before he could respond. He nodded brusquely and sauntered back toward the bar, where Logan was installing some shelving.
โBitch, you made it!โ Her cousin squeezed Kendra tightly before stepping back to assess her appearance, a wrinkle forming between her eyebrows. Lani was all about vibrant colors, and Kendraโs palette was much more neutral, so she was al- ways being bullied to step outside of her comfort zone and into prints that she found too busy, too bright, too attention- grabbing. Lani was in a pair of ripped, acid-washed blue jeans and a loud color-blocked sweater with bright red sneakers. She narrowed her eyes at what she would consider to be low frequencies emanating from Kendraโs look.
Kendra dropped a hand onto her hip and posed. โDonโt play me, I know I look good.โ Her coffee-colored duster over a white cropped tee and white high-waisted jogger pants hugged her curves and made her feel clean, like fresh air after a hard rain. Sheโd pulled her thick, silk-pressed tresses into a sleek ponytail, and per usual, her shades sat on top of her head like a headband. Kendra ran her fingers through her pony- tail, curling the ends around her index finger, and popped her tongue playfully.
Lani leaned forward, her eyes wide. โMmm-hmm. And a certain someone noticed too.โ
โWho? Stanley? I wouldnโt exactly describe him as a chocolate drop. Maybe more like a hazelnut latte.โ Kendra tilted her head, assessing the occupants of the room. There was Logan and Shonda, BJ, Auntie Al, Shondaโs sister Bree, Kendraโs par- ents, and Stanley, who was staring at Lani like she stole some- thinโ. Logan had a team of people that heโd walked back toward the kitchen, who Kendra assumed were the new restaurant staff. BJ was carrying cartons of wine and spirits down to the basement cellar. Kendraโs mom and Aunt Alisa were pretending to wipe down the counters, but theyโd been hovering over the same spot at the bar pointing at Kendra and whispering. The family motto should be: โSubtlety? We donโt know her.โ
Stanleyโs tall and lean build was squeezed behind some shelving that he was putting together for a wall display. Ken- draโs dad, Braxton, was reading the assembly instructions aloud to Stanley, whose attention remained trained on Lani, who seemed completely unaware. Kendra made eye contact with Shonda across the room, gesturing slightly with her chin toward Stanley, and Shondaโs smile grew wide. She nodded slowly, steepling her fingers like a mastermind with an evil plan. Kendra winked in response.
โNot Stanley, silly. BJ was asking about you,โ Lani whispered, her arm entwined with Kendraโs to keep her from slip- ping again.
BJ? Kendraโs face screwed up into a giant question mark. โHuh? Why?โ
Her cousin shrugged. โIโve been clocking it for the last week. Anytime your name was brought up, he was all ears.โ
โI mean, weโve known the guy a long time, so that doesnโt feel out of the ordinary to me. We havenโt seen each other in years.โ Kendraโs last post before her travels was in Silicon Valley. She often returned home for the holidays, but BJ al- ways went to be with his parents in Charlotte. When Kendra had been laid off from her role as a chief data officer for a thriving startup that was absorbed by a tech giant, sheโd taken her generous severance package and savings to do some soul- searching around the globe. BJ had checked in once in a while to ask where she was and how she was doing. Heโd always been thoughtful in that way.
After visiting family in Thailand and the Philippines, Kendra went to parts of Europe and finished off her trip in New Orleans spending quality time with her Granny. Each destination brought her new adventures and lessons in the culinary world and in determining what tools she would use to pave her path. Everyone in the family had built a legacy in their own way, and it finally felt like Kendraโs turn.
โThereโs my ray of sunshine!โ Kendraโs dad opened his arms and wrapped her into a warm hug, the scent of tobacco smoke lingering on his jacket.
She squeezed him tight, tucking her chin for her father to kiss her forehead. โDaddy! Mmm, what cigar were you smoking? It smells spicy.โ
โYour brother bought me a box of maduros, so we decided to have some coffee and sample them before we got started today.โ Her dadโs bronzed skin and thick, straight hair was tousled with some sort of product. Born in Los Angeles to a Filipino mother and a Thai father, he was the embodiment of California, wearing a jean jacket over a light sweater and slacks. When he met his wife, Regina, at George Washington University, he embraced DC with her, setting down roots, eventually convincing Auntie Al and Uncle Ronnie to move up from New Orleans to experience all four seasons. Their time in DC was cut short as they moved back to New Orleans when they started their familyโโfree childcare was worth the return, thanks to Granny and PawPaw.
Once Kendra and Logan were old enough to fend for themselves, Braxton and Regina moved back into their DC home, which theyโd rented out while down south. Auntie Mack fell in love with Charleston, and Kendraโs maternal grandmother remained in New Orleans alone now that Paw- Paw had passed. Her paternal grandparents remained in Los Angeles, giving her a reason to get some California sunshine whenever possible, but sheโd caught them on their annual trip to visit family during her time in Asia.
โThatโs a bold move to start with a maduro, but you know I like those. Especially if the coffee happened to be Irish.โ Kendra shared a knowing glance with her father as she pulled back, his arm still around her waist.
Braxton Porter kissed his daughterโs cheek, lowering his voice to barely a whisper before winking at her mischievously. โYour brother and I may have already had an Irish coffee or two out on the patio. Donโt tell your mother.โ
Kendra giggled, raising her hands in surrender. โYour secret is safe with me.โ They walked toward the bar area, which was painted a deep emerald green with creamy quartz countertops and golden fixtures. The herringbone pattern in the cherrywood flooring gleamed with gradients of reddish browns. โWow, this place is gorgeous,โ she gushed.
Natural light flooded in through massive picture windows dressed with velvet curtains the color of the faintest blush. On the windowsills were decorative vases and small plants, like succulents and snake plantsโones that didnโt require a lot of attention. On the walls were several blown-up photographs from Logan and Shondaโs travels as theyโd hit different countries on their bucket list and sampled different cuisines to find the right balance of flavors to feature on their menu of global fare. BJ had busied himself hanging another portrait, and Kendra studied his profile, taking in the broadness of his shoulders and the way his Henley sleeves were pushed up to his forearms, the fabric over his chest and arms hugging his physique. This man just gets better with age . . .
โYo, can you chill, cuz? You are lookinโ at him like heโs a
four-course meal and you wanna come back for seconds . . .โ
Kendra froze, her neck and cheeks immediately coloring at Laniโs observation. โSay it louder, I think the kitchen staff didnโt hear you!โ Kendra hissed, her attention snapping away from the strong arms lifting a black-and-white photograph of a wine cellar full of barrels on a long wall leading toward the unisex bathrooms.
BJ glanced in her direction before returning to his task and leveling the frame. Heat crawled up the column of Kendraโs throat, her skin boiling as she stared her cousin down.
โIf he heard you, I swear on all things holy that I will tell your mom all about how her favorite cashmere sweater got ruined.โ Kendra wiggled her fingers like she was casting a spell on her cousin.
โYou wouldnโt.โ Laniโs eyes darted around in a panic. As teenagers, she and Kendra snuck out to meet some boys, and Lani swiped her momโs ultrasoft cardigan to wear over a barely there tank top and coochie cutters. The fast heffa swore the sweater added a level of sophistication to her look. Suffice it to say that it was St. Pattyโs Day, and she spilled a green pint of beer on the luxe creamy knit, leaving a giant mint-colored swatch that she couldnโt explain. Instead, Lani framed the family dog and asserted that heโd dragged the sweater outside into the grass. Auntie Mack was devastated.
Kendraโs sinister smile spread like the Grinch stealing Christmas. โTry me.โ

Two graduate students must set aside their rivalry and journey to Hell to save their professorโs soul, perhaps at the cost of their own.
Alice Law has only ever had one goal: to become one of the brightest minds in the field of Magick. She has sacrificed everything to make that a realityโher pride, her health, her love life, and most definitely her sanity. All to work with Professor Jacob Grimes at Cambridge, the greatest magician in the worldโthat is, until he dies in a magical accident that could possibly be her fault.
Grimes is now in Hell, and sheโs going in after him. Because his recommendation could hold her very future in his now incorporeal hands, and even death is not going to stop the pursuit of her dreams. Nor will the fact that her rival, Peter Murdoch, has come to the same conclusion.

+ I dove into this book without seeing many reviews for it. I just knew there was hype because it is R.F. Kuang and I loved The Poppy War series, but those are the only books I have read from her. I still have Babel on my TBR list but have never gotten around to it. I was pleasantly surprised with Katabasis!
+ Alice Law is a grad student who needs to go to Hell to get her professor back. Peter Murdoch her classmate/colleague/competition, goes with her. There are a lot of philosophers, academics, mythology mentioned in here, and I have heard of some of them and studied some of it in school, but I loved how we are taken on this journey to Hell with this students who have studied so much about magick and Hell. I didn’t know have the things they were talking about. These two are brilliant minds and it shows, because it hurt my brain to hear them go on and on about this philosophy or paradox, or equations of something or other. But I thought it was also fun, even though it was a lot to process, because I could have never been like Alice and Peter.
+ Hell was a fascinating place and in this book, it’s a campus. Which I actually thought was funny. There were lots of humorous parts in this book actually! I really loved how there was action with the Kripkes, strange bone-like creatures that were out for blood! I find so many of the characters they met along the way, whether they be mythological personas or former people from their college, very fascinating. They all stood out in their own ways with their own motivations while in Hell.
+ Alice is an amazing, flawed character, probably some readers will find unlikable but she is who she is! She’s obsessed with succeeding, to the point of it being unhealthy but has to learn, while in Hell that it’s all futile when the man she admired is really a monster who pitted her and Peter against one another. She has been basically been abused by this professor but her admiration of him was clouding out all the bad things happening with him. She also faces that she is depressed. Her journey through Hell was actually her salvation where she realized so many things about life above, finding her voice and power and about love. I also thought Peter’s backstory was tragic.
+ Although this is a dark academia book taking place in Hell, there is room for love. And Alice and Peter are just two people who didn’t have time to even consider love while they were so consumed with their higher learning endeavors. But their time in Hell helps them work through some of the misunderstandings, lack of communication, and distrust. It’s kind of sad that it took this for them to see that love was there between them.
+ I loved all the questions, themes and messages in this story. It explored women in academia, pursuit of higher education and how toxic it can be. I also love how it explores Alice’s descent into a person who is filled with bitterness, anger, revenge, but also hopelessness and how she evolves through her journey in Hell.
~ This is dark academia – emphasis on academia. Now because there was so much academia name dropping and so many I never heard of since I’m not and will never be pursuing knowledge to that degree. I did have to read a little of this day by day to process it better. At times it did get bogged down with too many mentions of philosophers and their philosophies that I needed a mental break. Honestly, I can see how Alice lost herself when her whole world was surrounding academia and nothing else.
~ This is dark – there are mentions of suicidal ideation, sexual harassment, even some parts that I considered horror. But also, I thought this book had humor as well, still there are dark themes explored by Alive and Peter.
~ Though I loved the people we came across in Hell, the landscape and world building of Hell at times felt lacking. Maybe Hell is lacking? I mean, yes it gave me gloomy, stark vibes, but I felt like we were just moving through these levels quickly and not really getting a feel for what they look like.
Quotes From The Book:
“To learn is the most godlike thing we do”
Katabasis by. R.F. Kuang
“She had not realized, until that day, how humans needed to forget to function.”
Katabasis by. R.F. Kuang
“Professor Grimes had instilled in her a deep horror of ever being made an idiot.”
Katabasis by. R.F. Kuang
“This was a paradox her mind could not accept, that someone could be in the world one moment and simply be gone in the next.”
Katabasis by. R.F. Kuang
“It was all so unfair, she thought. You thought people were giants, and they devastated you by being so human.”
Katabasis by. R.F. Kuang
Final Thoughts:
I was going back and forth between a 4 and a 4.5 star for this book but I enjoyed so much of Alice’s journey within herself and I liked the combination of academia, fantasy, horror even, and romance. I wasn’t expecting the humor but I loved that. Did I have to read it little by little because there was a lot to process? Was some of the info-dumping a little clinical? Yes, but I felt like my brain got a workout – but in a good way. Because once upon a time when I was in college I did love learning about Dante, philosophy, and logic…but come on, it’s been so long I’ve been in school! ๐ I’ve been reading a lot to escape and not think so that this book forced me to think – I actually totally appreciate it! I was highly entertained by this book! I still need to read Babel, but I look forward to reading more books from R.F. Kuang.

Is there a month, quarter or other specific time of year when you do your most reading and why do you think that is?
I actually don’t know! I feel like my automatic answer is fall (but hello I live in Hawaii – it doesn’t get cold here! ๐ ). But fall is BUSY – holidays, my kids school projects, etc….so…maybe winter? Because the sun sets faster and I do my best reading at night.
Does this tend to fluctuate every year or is your reading pretty โsteadyโ?
Now, if the topic was when do I read the most…according to the arcs I was given this year, it seems like major publishing dates occur in July and September. So I will say according to this year alone, I had so many arcs to read for these 2 months out of the whole year. December is such a dry spell – is everyone just busy? ๐
August Topics:

September 12: Following the Reader
Prompts: What makes you want to follow a bookish account on social media? What makes you want to follow a book blog? Are you very discerning or do you follow back whoever follows you? Do you prefer or find it easier to engage with other readers on one platform over the other (i.e. blogs vs. bookstagram or booktok)?
September 19: Favourite Genre Recommendations
Prompts:What is your favourite genre(s) and what makes it your favourite? If someone wanted to try your favourite genre(s), what are five books that you would recommend to them and why those books specifically? Has your favorite genre changed over time?
September 26: Are Published Books Losing Quality? The Impact of Social Media Platforms and Trope-Based Marketing
Prompts:Reading has become increasingly more โpopularโ due to platforms like booktok and bookstagram, which tend to promote certain types of books. It has also given rise to the โtrope onlyโ marketing trend. Do you think the hype thatโs been created on these platforms has impacted the quality of books that are published these days? Do you think itโs impacting only certain genres or do you notice it across all genres? How do you think this will impact book quality and publishing in the years to come (i.e. is it just a phase or will it continue)?
August was a long month that went by quickly because my kids went back to school. So we are back in the school routine again! I did read a lot, apparently I had a lot of arcs for September to get through. I have 3 more arcs for September to finish!
I read 26 books and posted 20 book reviews in August.

+ What did I just read? By the way, I did not request this book. Someone from the publisher emailed me saying I might want to try out this book. It did not sound like something I wanted to read BUT I was looking for more thrillers and horror to showcase for fall. And so I downloaded this book – I’m glad I did.
+ This story is set in 1975 – and since I was born in 1978, I could already see it, how things looked back in the day. The clothes, the cars, the people, the music and even the political commentary about war – Vietnam. I did grow up watching Full Metal Jacket and Platoon – so Duane Minor was a character that was not hard to envision and picture at all. But what I love about this setting is that there are vampires in this story and it totally fits! I’ve been reading too many romantasy vampires – but these modern vampires in Coffin Moon – are killers.
+ Duane Minor is a Vietnam vet with PTSD. He and his friends have seen and done horrible things and being back home in America, they have to deal with that the best they can. That means coping with rage by drowning it in alcohol or even taking out that anger out on people. But Duane isn’t a bad man, he’s taking care of his sister-in-law’s daughter, Julia because her mother is in jail for killing her abusive dad. He doesn’t know how to be a dad, but he and his wife Heidi have done their best. I liked Duane a lot and was horrified at what he had to go through. I didn’t expect to be emotional about his predicament but I was rooting for him and Julia so hard.
+ There are a lot of themes in this book like grief, rage, and revenge which I loved. It’s not only a vampire horror book, it’s got depth.
+ This book is a wild ride. It is so gory, gruesome, and John Varley is the most villainous character I’ve ever read this year and I wanted him dead by the end of this book. I was hooked onto this book just to see if it would happen. My face was in a grimace with all the gory scenes in this book. He is a psycho vampire, a sociopath, he relishes blood, bathes in it, heady and aroused by it. I was scared no one would be able to take him down.
~ This isn’t my usual kind of book to read – yes once upon a time in high school I was in a horror phase but I only pick it up once in awhile now and usually during fall because of the vibes. So the gore was almost too much for me! I was scared of John Varley, he seemed invincible.
Final Thoughts:
I’m rating this as someone who hardly reads this genre and I have to say I loved it. It gripped me from the first chapter, and wouldn’t let go! The gore might be just a tad bit too much for me, but it made me want John Varley eliminated as much as Duane and Julia wanted him gone. I was rooting so hard for Duane and Julia. Overall, if you like your modern vampires psychotic, but with a story about grief and revenge – you will enjoy this one!
