Title: This Time (Nadira Holden, Demon Hunter Book 1)

Author: Azaaa Davis

Format: eBook (Kindle Unlimited)

Pages: 250

Categories: Urban Fantasy, Demon Hunter, Adult Fiction

Legendary demon hunter Nadira Holden paid the ultimate price to end the war between demons and hunters.

Resurrected in present-day New York, many years have passed, everyone moved on without her, and the demons she once battled have made peace with humans. Nadira no longer has a purpose here. Dying again might be her ticket back to that “next life” she experienced.

Except humans are disappearing, and Nadira’s father is one of the missing. Feeling a strong obligation to find him before sorting out her own fate, she begins investigating.

She won’t rest in peace unless she can prove the demons are behind the disappearances. But Nadira is running out of time. The darkness within her is causing her to lose her humanity while the rest of mankind is on the verge of enslavement to the demons they now worship.

Fight with Nadira in a new urban fantasy series that combines monster-slaying action, family drama, and simmering romance. Experience why not even death can stop her.

Fans of Vampire Hunter Anita Blake, Succubus Georgina Kincaid, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Vampire Death Dealer Selene are possessed and eagerly awaiting the next book by fantasy author Azaaa Davis.

I was asked to review this book by indie urban fantasy author Azaaa Davis and all opinions are my own.

This Time is about Nadira Holden, a demon hunter. The book starts off fast-paced and exciting. We learn about Nadira’s upbringing and belonging to the Children of Orion, a sect of demon hunters. She had a reputation as a top notch demon hunter but something happens, she dies, and then she is resurrected in present day, and things have definitely changed in the world the live in.

When the blurb of this book compares it to Anita Blake, I can see why, except Nadira is much more level-headed than Anita Blake. And there is way less sex in This Time. There is some heat and sexy scenes in this book but like I said, not Anita Blake level sex, and I actually appreciate that.

As a character, Nadira is a fearsome fighter and was trained to be. It was interesting to see the choice she makes concerning the Children of Orion, but I totally get where she is coming from. Secrets are revealed, and it just makes Nadira question everything. The middle of the book I felt slowed down a bit until we meet a character named Roquelle. Things start to get very interesting with this twist.

What I loved most about the novel is the diversity among the cast of characters. 👏🏼 I didn’t connect much to the characters, maybe because it’s the first book and I’m learning Nadira’s voice and everyone else’s. Like I said, she’s pretty even-keeled until Roquelle comes around. Then her personality shall we say, flourishes? I think her relationship with Jaime was nice, I liked their budding friendship after a suspicious first meeting. And of course, there is Derek, who is a hottie demon duke and their relationship sizzles. The world-building is creative and detailed but I can tell there is much more to learn about the Children of Orion and her family. The book ends strongly with a lot of action, because Nadira Holden can fight.

I think fans of urban fantasy will really like this series. This Time is an enjoyable, promising debut and I look forward to following Nadira Holden’s journey.

Book Review: Supernatural Academy – Year One

Book Blurb:

Maddison James is about to discover some truths about the world. Firstly … supernaturals exist. WTF? Secondly … she is one, even though no one seems to know exactly what kind. Double WTF. Thirdly … she’s about to go back to school. Well, things just got a little more interesting. The Supernatural Academy is where shifters, vampires, magic users, and fey are educated. Where they are taught about their abilities, and how to function in the human world. Maddison already has the human part down, but this supernatural thing is an entirely new dangerous game. Example one: mean girls who can actually turn you into a frog. Example two: Asher Locke, a god at the Academy. Not literally … well, who knows for sure. He certainly acts the part, as do all of his minions who worship him. Asher drives her crazy, because apparently gorgeous and arrogant is her thing. Sparks fly between them, and the more they’re thrown together, the more Asher is determined to figure out what’s been blocking her abilities.Until the moment the truth is revealed, and they find out nothing in this supernatural world is what they thought. Including each other.

MY REVIEW

I don’t know why I have an addiction to these “academy” books but I think my addiction may be tapering off. 🤷🏻‍♀️😅 These academy titles have been flooding my Kindle Unlimited recommendations lists, which sort of bugs me because I want to see what else is available to read outside of what they recommend. But here we go, another academy book…

I do enjoy reading about supernatural beings all in one school, learning about their abilities and getting along with each other. It just makes the whole typical school story so much more extra. This is a new adult urban fantasy with sex scenes so it definitely gets hot and steamy.

Maddison James had been living among humans all her life, thinking she was human until she finds out she’s not. Other supernaturals can’t quite figure out what she is though, but she is very powerful and has an affinity for water. Being at the academy has given her a new life with structure and friends, something she didn’t have growing up. She learns about the origins of supernaturals and the lost kingdom of Atlantis. I really like Maddi, she’s fun, spunky and knows herself. She embraces her uniqueness and can stand up for herself against the mean girls. Maddi also got herself some cool new friends in Ilia and Larissa.

The lore of Atlantis has always been fascinating to me and I thought this book did a fun take on it. There are five very hot guys at the academy and they are nicknamed the Atlantean Five. Of course she is drawn to the hottest guy of the group, Asher Locke, and he to her. I was afraid this was going to be a reverse harem book and I’m not so much into that, so I’m glad it wasn’t. Also it’s not a bully romance, hooray for me, I had way enough of that last one so it kind of turned me off.

As you see in the blurb there is a lot of WTF’s and cursing going on in the book so if you don’t like cursing, this book isn’t for you. There was action, humor, and romance which was a nice balance and made it a quick read. I will be reading the next book because I need to find out what Maddi is exactly and if the bad guys are really bad. See, I’m already looking forward to the next book, why are these academy books so addicting? 😂 WTF. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Magic. Isn’t. Real.
At least that’s what I thought. But now, my story is changing…

You know you’re invisible when even your bullies forget to pick on you. That’s me, Bettina Blair, hidden in plain sight. No matter how hard I try I just never fit in with my classmates.

Now I know why. I’m a witch…apparently.

One little demon attack and my parents confess their ugly secret…and ship me off to an elite academy of magic- for witches only.

I can’t summon magic. I can’t fight with my hands or my fists. I just don’t belong here, and Jackson Lancaster keeps reminding me every single chance he gets. This boy is the most insufferable, intolerable, unbearable, judgmental person to ever have the right to be that gorgeous. I don’t care how sexy his British accent is, or that literally everyone else on campus adores him. He hates me, and the feeling is mutual.

Suddenly, I’m sent on a quest into the Old Lands to find the only thing that can save Eden from a demon invasion. I’m in way over my head, and my best chance of coming back alive lies in the hands of the guy who wants me gone…

The Hidden Witch is the first book in a brand new, fast paced urban fantasy adventure featuring a sharp-witted heroine, swoon-worthy hero, and one epic hate-to-love rollercoaster set inside a magical academy!

MY REVIEW

Bettina Blair is a teenage girl who finds out she’s a witch after being attacked by a demon. She gets sent to Edenburg Academy, a school where she learns about her powers, the history of witches and how to train to become a Sword.

Bettina struggles with her combat training at first but with help from her new friends and coven leaders she eventually rises to her potential at being a Sword. Of course there is the issue of her gorgeous instructor, Jackson Lancaster, who always seems angry with her – but the tension between them is far from hateful feelings brewing, it’s just the opposite.

This was a quick read and it was exactly the fast paced kind of story I was looking for. I like how Bettina developed into a kick-ass fighter at the Academy. She’s a character that’s easy to like. There is a great supporting cast of characters and with the next books I hope we get to know them much better.

The last half of the book throws Bettina and her friends into some battle situations where she gets to use her combat skills. She is then chosen to partake on a mission to the Old Lands, a dimension not part of Earth. The book does end in a cliffhanger so I was ready to download Book 2 when I finished this book at almost one in the morning but book 2 doesn’t come out until May 19, 2019! Other than the ending which I felt was a bit rushed, it’s a great start to a series and I look forward to reading more of Bettina Blair and her adventures.
