Let’s Talk Bookish:  What is one book that everyone else seemed to love except you? | 5/16/25

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly bookish meme originally created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @ Book Nook Bits, where every Friday, bloggers write discussion posts based on a weekly prompt and Dini @ dinipandareads has cohosted since the beginning of 2025.

This week’s topic is:

May 16: What is one book that everyone else seemed to love except you? (Isabella @ The Ink Bound Reader)

Prompts: Have you ever experienced what seems like the whole book community raving about a book, only to discover it’s not all that? What are some story elements that put you off while reading? What about books others dislike that you love? Feel free to share examples of which books everyone loved and you didn’t, and vice versa! 🤭

**********

Have you ever experienced what seems like the whole book community raving about a book, only to discover it’s not all that?

Yes. 😅 The latest one is Onyx Storm. I love the series, but this book I didn’t love like the first book. I might have to do a re-read because I’m wondering if it was because I was in a bad mood? But yes there are a lot of people who loved it and I didn’t but hey…reading is subjective and we are all not going to love the same books. Plus I’m a mood reader so yeah…also I’ve found I don’t love cozy romance as much as others do.

What are some story elements that put you off while reading?

Miscommunication, a FMC who is always making mistakes and never learning her lesson; lately so many romantasy has the same, predictable things happening – secret identity/secret powers – so now I’m trying to find romantasy that is unique but that’s hard to do.

What about books others dislike that you love?

Yes there are some – like I said reading is subjective so it’s fine if people dislike what I like – that’s how it’s supposed to work I think!

Feel free to share examples of which books everyone loved and you didn’t, and vice versa!

I know lots of people didn’t Shatter Me by. Tahereh Mafi and yes it was very different but I was intrigued enough to read the second book and then fell in love with Warner! But people definitely hated this one!

I didn’t love Deep End by. Ali Hazelwood, like everyone did – I gave it 3 stars I believe. There were parts I enjoyed like the sports romance of it all but I felt cold about the two characters. I didn’t like that she always cried and I didn’t like that he came off just bland to me even if they were both into BDSM.

Just for the Summer by. Abby Jimenez was so popular I had to read it and it was the first book I read from her and didn’t love it. It was just okay for me.

The Grandest Game by. Jennifer Lynn Barnes, is part of a beloved series The Inheritance Games or a spinoff of it and I loved The Inheritance Games series but I think I outgrew it? I’m not sure, but I wasn’t into this one.

The idea is pretty simple, every week you dedicate a post to the three W’s:

What are you currently reading?

What have you just finished reading?

What are you going to read next?

We are counting down to June, and my vacation! I’m excited but also nervous too? So I am trying my hardest to get through July arcs – I had 18 and now I have 12 to go 🫠. But I also see in September I have 12 arcs to finish…then Oct-Dec…barely anything. Yet, I also want to read the newest books – reader problems!!

What are you currently reading?

Predatory Natures by. Amy Goldsmith – 15%

The Jasad Crown by. Sara Hashem – 2%

Give Me a Reason by. Jayci Lee

The Courting of Bristol Keats by. Mary E. Pearson – 64% – I got the audiobook. I think I have to borrow the book again. I’m 64% through with this audiobook but I feel like I haven’t gotten a grasp of the world building through listening to it.

Weekly Wrap Up | 5/11/25

Aloha friends!

Another week is over and here’s what happened:

+ HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY to all you mama’s out there, whether it be to your own child, furbabies, other pet babies, your nieces/nephews – if you are a mother figure, Happy Mother’s Day. I told my hubby I wanted books as my gift, so he’s giving me money to buy some YAY. I think I’m going to use it to get the Legendborn books (I only have Legendborn in hardcover – or should I wait until the whole series is out? 🤔). Anyway I’m excited to add to my collection. We are going to my mom’s house today to celebrate Mother’s Day and my sister’s birthday early.

+ It was a long week because my son’s “cold” turned into a fever/cough/he basically was fighting some virus. And yet he went to school because he had an advanced placement test he didn’t want to miss, then a National test the next day and then he has been waiting for e-sports try-outs. I was trying to hard to get him better! Made him tea with honey and lemon, picked him up from school on the days he went (usually he walks home). So I was being nurse mom all week and then we also had to go to his orthodontist because he is done with his invisalign (yay!) and will be starting retainers soon! And yes they knew he was getting over a cold but it’s so hard to reschedule these things so my son toughed it out and did well! Didn’t have to cough or sneeze while his session.

+ I did go to my Korea Shopping Tour luncheon last Sunday and it looks like a fun group. It’s 29 of us – 4 of them men (husbands lol). The 2 bigger groups are families with kids, parents, and a grandparent – so cute! So I’m just counting down to that trip.

I hope you all have a great week!

Let’s Talk Bookish:  Motivation to Read | 5/9/25

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly bookish meme originally created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @ Book Nook Bits, where every Friday, bloggers write discussion posts based on a weekly prompt and Dini @ dinipandareads has cohosted since the beginning of 2025.

Prompts: How do you motivate yourself to sit down and concentrate on reading? Do you have a set reading time/schedule that works best for you to focus? Do you have tips/tricks that you would recommend others try?

**********

How do you motivate yourself to sit down and concentrate on reading?

I actually have lots of motivation to read to escape from reality! lol…so I have no trouble doing it.

Do you have a set reading time/schedule that works best for you to focus?

I actually like to read at night when it’s nice and quiet, when everyone is asleep. If I’m blogging and doing stuff on the computer or stamping out orders for my Etsy shop then I try to find an audiobook or not. Sometimes I have an hour in the day before picking up my kids from school. But mostly I do my reading at night.

Do you have tips/tricks that you would recommend others try?

Yikes, I’m not sure how to motivate anyone to read. I suggest it to my son only because sometimes he can’t go to sleep right away and reading a little does help him, I think. Audiobooks does help if you are determined to knock some titles off your TBR list or something like that and don’t feel like picking up a book. If you don’t have any motivation to stay still, sit and read, then you can even work out and read – I’ve definitely walked on the treadmill before with my kindle app on my ipad (or audiobook) and read a few pages of a book in the 30-45 minutes I work out.

The idea is pretty simple, every week you dedicate a post to the three W’s:

What are you currently reading?

What are you going to read next?

I finally got some audiobooks for this month – and why did so many library holds become available to borrow at the same time?! Also my son came down with a cold or the flu or some virus on Sunday – he went to school the past 2 days but last night he had a fever so I said he is staying home today. I’m trying not to get his germs – I’m already dealing with allergies from pollen and volcano vog! We just need to get through this week. 😅 And forget my book buying ban – I give up lol…the pretty edges are too enticing. 🫠

What are you currently reading?

The Rivaled Crown by. Holly Renee – 20% – no progress – I might put this aside and come back to it another time.

The Love Haters by. Katherine Center – 35% – okay so far.

Vilest Things by. Chloe Gong – 33% – I don’t know if I’m going to finish this one – I don’t feel invested.

His Mortal Demise by. Vanessa Le – 129 pages in out of 400, some progress

A Forgery of Fate by. Elizabeth Lim – 26% – started this arc and it’s moving quickly!

The Courting of Bristol Keats by. Mary E. Pearson – 20% – I got the audiobook.

**********

Are you part of a bookish fandom?

Hmmm, I guess I am a fan of S.J.Maas and I have read all her books. I am a fan of Fourth Wing series but haven’t read anything else by Yarros. I definitely love Holly Black books and so many I can’t list them all.

If you are, what do you love about it?

I just love when you find other people and fans that love the authors or books as much as you do. It’s nice to know others feel the same way you do about a certain book or author.

Does being part of the online book community help you connect to fandoms?

Being on social media definitely connects me to fandoms, especially popular ones like S.J.Maas books. If I wasn’t online I wouldn’t know who to fangirl with! It is only now that one of my best friends have gotten back into reading and she just picked up the ACOTAR series and I gifted her the Fourth Wing series so basically I’m telling her to hurry up and catch up so I can have someone to talk about them with! 😅. I can’t say I’m active in the fandom in that I’m always posting about my favorites, (it gets tiring, I don’t know how you the social media booktokers, boostagramers, etc… do it!) but I like to see all the posts, so you people keep posting it!

Aloha friends!

Another week is over and here’s what happened:

+ My kids have 4 weeks of school left! They are so excited. I am too only because I have two trips coming up – one being South Korean in the 2nd week of June with my older sister. Today we are going to our tour luncheon so I can finally find out our travel information!

+ We went to Shabbat service on Friday because it was led by the kids and my son was going to have speaking parts – which he needs and is good practice for his Bar Mitzvah next year (he is NOT looking forward to it 😅). Speaking of Bar Mitzvah – I have a party to plan for next year I guess! My daughter’s class did go up to do the candle blessing and a song so that was nice.

I hope you all have a great week!

And here we are at the end of April. WOW. May is gonna go fast because it’s the last month school for the kiddos. And I’m trying to read my July arcs, because there are so many 😅. I go on my trip to South Korea in the second week of June, so I’m trying to stay on top of things.

Aloha friends!

Another week is over and here’s what happened:

+ It was a weird week for my kids school schedule – my 12 year old had SBA testing for 2 days and ended school at 11am (lucky him!). Then my daughter had a waiver day on Friday so they both got a little bit of a break I’d say.

+ The Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders went live this week. I had my calendar as it being on Thursday but I had a brain fart and didn’t realize that meant it would go live earlier in Hawaii on Wednesday, at 6pm. I only realized this at 6:45pm when it was trending on Twitter, I was so mad at myself. It was pretty much sold out everywhere but I told my son we had a chance for Gamestop the next day. But while my hubby was on Best Buy’s site and in a queue waiting for 30 minutes, I decided to hop onto Best Buy on my laptop and I waited maybe 5 minutes before I got to order! 🙏🏽. Here I was freaking out and my son said he was never worried. Oh how nice for him! 😅 But I knew how bad he’s been wanting this Switch so I really wanted to get a pre-order for him. He paid for it with money saved up but yeah, my job was just to do the pre-order.

+ I was supposed to be on a book buying ban but I got invited to sign up for the YA box for Fairy Loot. I’ve never had a Fairy Loot subscription and honestly I have been eyeing all their books on bookstagram and had book envy. 😩 I actually wanted the adult book box but who knows how long I have to wait for that. If I get that then I’ll cancel the YA one. But yeah…books are getting me through this year – it’s like book therapy. 😅 So I’m excited, maybe I’ll cancel Kindle Unlimited? Maybe…only because I have so many arcs to read this year. UM nevermind, I came to my senses after seeing the cost of shipping SMH. I can buy 3 books with the price of that subscription box so I cancelled it. LOL😅

I hope you all have a great week!
