Books I Might Read On Vacation

Um…I haven’t gone on a real vacation in a decade. Vegas for 2 days in May didn’t really count because I was not going to spend time reading at all. Not on my 2 days of freedom lol. So…hmmm….I am going on “vacation” in November to visit my in-laws in upstate New York – we are still going to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania also (even though my MIL just most from there to NY last month)…but here are some books I’d love to be able to read during the plane ride.

I’m only doing 4 today since if I was really reading on the plane, I couldn’t finish more than one book. Something about planes just makes me want to sleep and watch the free movies. But I really do hope I can bring my ipad on the trip and catch up on arcs. It’ll depend on my mood and how much stuff I want to be carrying. 😑

I’ve only read two books from Susan Dennards Witchland series and I didn’t stop because it wasn’t good. I just think I forgot about the series because there were just so many other books I was reading at the time. So I was curious about the blurb from this book, The Luminaries – a forest that could kill you? Sounds perfect for fall reading and I was right! This is what I liked and didn’t like about the book:

+ I love all the tropes in this story: a mysterious, dark forest that filled with monsters or nightmares as they are called, a girl trying to redeem the scandalized family name, a girl lacking in skills who wears ill fitting glasses but filled with passion and drive, a boy who was a best-friend and first crush who shunned her and is now training her, a secret…I loved the intensity and the action that moved that story.

+ The world-building is fascinating and creative. There is a secret society called The Luminaries and they are monster hunters. Monsters are called Nightmares in this story though and basically they are the stuff of nightmares like werewolves, vampira, melusine, kelpies, banshees – every monster of myth and legend but there is something new in the forest. The Luminaries go into the forest each night and kill Nightmares. Winnie interestingly enough is assigned to clean-up duty, she picks up what’s left in the forest when it’s morning and the mist is gone. The hunter clans are interesting and their last names correspond with a day of the week (Monday, Tuesday…etc…) they all have their own niche and expertise.

+ Winnie Wednesday is that kind of heroine that you can easily cheer on. Her appearance sounds mousy because she’s not wealthy, she wears glasses that need to be updated, she never sounds put-together and yet she is brave and a natural hunter instinct even with a lack of training. She is determined to get back into the Luminaries good graces and don’t underestimate this girl, she can kick butt when she needs to! There is a lot of growth in character and I look forward to seeing what happens to her in book two.

+ The friends to enemies to lovers trope is teasing us in this book. I want more of Winnie and Jay. I love their interactions and the spark between them, the intense emotions that’s going on under the surface. I’m invested!

+ There are a lot of interesting characters in this book, like Mario the lab guy and Erica, Winne’s ex best friend. There is so much more to uncover in this world, that I’m looking forward to the next book.

~ This is just the beginning of the world building and it sounds like there is so much more to learn about The Luminaries and the different families. I did have some questions about the forest and how it works all over the world with different Luminaries – there is mention of international Luminaries. We need more information about the Dianas who are witches and Luminaries enemy.

~ It ends with a cliffhanger where many things are revealed but nothing resolved…but makes me want book two ASAP. It’s definitely not a bad thing, I just need more info!

Spice Level: (there is no kiss, there is no romance…but there is intensity!)

Why you should read it:

  • world building, story with scandal, redemption, secret society, monsters and a girl who has a desire to belong again
  • budding romance between Winnie and Jay
  • diverse characters, lots of action, mystery

Why you might not want to read it:

  • I feel like the world-building for this series is going to be huge, but we are only getting the tip of the iceberg for now. So much more to learn about the Luminaries, the Dianas, what happened to Winnie’s dad and Erica’s sister, what is up with the daywalker, what is the Whisperer… so with that said…you may want to wait until more books are out to binge it?

My Thoughts:

This story is fun and exactly what I was kind of looking for in a contemporary with fantasy elements. I love the scary forest and the mist and monsters that come in the night. There was lots of action because Winnie is taking part in trials to become a hunter and that was fun because we get to see her fight or try to monsters. Winnie is a heroine I can root for as she tries to redeem the family name, but there is more to the story – a mystery about her father and some other characters in the book. I love the intense interactions between Winnie and Jay and I just want to learn more about this world about Luminaries! The only issue I had was that I wanted more information about everything and now I have to wait for book two. This is a great start to what seems like an exciting new series.

I am trash for fae books and this one has lots of tropes that are so much fun in a romantasy.

+ The tropes are many in this one: a girl who doesn’t know her past-she’s Fae but lived in the human world since she was a child and she was exiled from Faerie but don’t know why, a competition for the Seelie king’s hand, faerie is dying unless the king marries, and the king can’t fall in love because his love will kill. Oh and to top it off, the competition is like a reality dating show.

+ I like Ava a lot. She’s strong, she’s independent, and she’s not afraid of Torin and Faerie. She also has a fun friend Shalini by her side. I like Torin too! He seems like a good guy, just stuck with king responsibilities and a curse, of course!

+ I like the sexual tension between Ava and Torin and it will be interesting to see where it goes.

~ It’s short and moves quickly, a little rushed in the competition parts but that’s okay – I expect it with these series that drop releases more quickly than the bigger publishers.

~ I love Shalini and hopes she gets to do more in Faerie than just sitting in the room and reading books. What kind of an adventure is that?

Tropes: touch kills, love kills, a girl with a secret past, competition to marry king, reality dating show

Spice Level: 🌶

Why you should read it:

  • super quick read
  • lots of fun tropes and it’s a Fae story
  • Ava and Torin

Why you might not want to read it:

  • it’s a quick read but also scenes are rushed
  • the next book releases in a few months so maybe wait to binge the whole series

My Thoughts:

I was in the mood for a book set in Faerie and this author is definitely one I go to for a book with all the tropes I’m looking for and it’s New Adult. Also the wait for sequels won’t be long which also satisfies my craving. Overall a fun start to a new series, hopefully we get a little more depth to the story in the sequel.

Weekly Wrap Up | 10/09/22

Aloha friends!

My kids were on fall break and honestly we didn’t do much. I’ve been just trying to make sure my daughter got healthy this week so she can start off Monday on a clean slate, no cold. But I do think she’s dealing with allergies – she has a post nasal drip that causes her to cough. So just trying to deal with that and so far she’s so much better! My son recovered nicely from his sore throat episode and good thing too since their October is packed with school activities.

I did get some reading done which is nice and we did do a family outing nearby to the Kroc Center which held an Kroctober Fest.

DNF is an acronym that stands for did not finish. 

What makes you DNF a book?

If I am constantly putting down a book because it’s boring me or I have a hard time concentrating then I either DNF or tell myself to come back to it at a later time. I still have a hard time DNF’ing arcs though – so if I get halfway through the book and that’s all I can push through – I’ll skim the rest.

How often do you DNF books? 

Not a lot – but if I have too many books I’ve borrowed, or arcs due in a month, I find myself letting the borrowed books go past due date. I can always come back to them. I think I’ve been DNF’ing a book every other month this year lol.

What’s the silliest or pettiest reason why you DNF’d a book?

A main character who gets on my nerves to the point I cannot continue reading about them anymore. I feel like my will is pretty strong to push through any book and I sometimes like unlikable characters. But if it comes to the point where everything about them just puts me off then I DNF the book.

Do you review books that you DNF?

If they are arcs – yes I do review them as best I can. It’s super rare for me to give a one star review, even for a DNF’d book because someone else out there might actually love the book. But books that aren’t arcs? If I have the energy to write a review after DNF’ing it I will – but most times, I don’t.

I have finally read The Atlas Six even though it was sitting on my shelf for the past 3 months or so. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get to it before the sequel came out but I did! Yay! So I can see why this book had so much hype. Here’s what did and didn’t work for me:

+ This story is told between six POV’s. We have:

  • Libby – she’s a physicist who loves science and is a bit awkward, has a hard time making friends.
  • Nick (Varona) – Libby’s rival and reluctant partner in crime. They hate one another are better together.
  • Reina – lots of natural power involving plants. She DGAF a lot of times.
  • Tristan – son of a witch crime lord, he feels he is never enough for anyone. Power to do with time.
  • Parisa – dangerous, gorgeous, a telepath.
  • Callum – another dangerous telepath who really DGAF.

Throughout the story I realized none of them are actually likable – all their flaws are on display and their hunger for power and knowledge (whatever The Society is offering) is pretty much their biggest flaw. The one who grew on me the most I think is Nick. Especially because he has this friend Gideon who maybe he feels something for? I’m not even sure…I was even thinking Nick and Libby would make a great enemies to lovers kind of storyline. But now I don’t know!

+ World building is fascinating. There is a secret society, with access to the Library of Alexandria, who is offering a place for 6 potential recruits. These recruits are the best of the best and have certain abilities the Society is looking for. Their task? To protect the Library and basically learn and study until they are initiated. Learning about their abilities is interesting. I don’t know that I understand a lot about the time traveling – it always takes me awhile for me to grasp things like that – but Libby and Nico’s powers are cool and very useful. Reina’s is cool because come on…plants! The telepaths of course are good but scary. But there is so much more to learn about this world.

+ During their time at the library, these people get more powerful and then they learn only 5 of them will be chosen. One person must die and they basically have to work it among themselves. This is where alliances are created and broken. There is a lot of distrust among them – even I didn’t really know who would be the best to kill off except Callum was on my list as person #1. Parisa being number 2…lol I just would hate having someone be in my head manipulating me! But the tension between all of them is good.

+ The ending was a good twist and makes me want to read book two as soon as it comes out.

~ Some parts of the book was slow and I think because there are six POV’s and I knew I was going to become more interested in certain ones over others and that’s what happened. At least each chapter is fairly short but for a time while they are at the library and just basically learning more about science and their skill…I was wondering what else was going to happen at the library because all they were doing was learning. But I was kinda there and reading it for the personal dramas 😅. Libby hates Nick, Libby wants friends, everyone hates Libby, Reina hates everyone but tolerates Nick, Callum thinks he’s better than everyone, Parisa knows she’s better than everyone, and Tristan just wants to be used.

~ There is a little bit of romance, but I can’t get a feel for what’s going to happen. Like is Libby and Nick a potential thing? I love that they are reluctant hateful besties in a way lol. What about Nick and Gideon though? I definitely want to see that develop! And then Libby and Tristan? I mean it could work…maybe? I don’t know. There were not really any romantics feelings being talked about except for Tristan and how he was feeling about Libby.

Tropes: chosen ones, rivals, alliances, dark academia, time travel, unlikable/morally gray characters, sentient library

Spice Level: 🌶 (one scene in particular but it is not graphic)

Why you should read it:

  • dark academia vibes – mysterious, so much learning, and characters who are kind of full of themselves (at least some of them are)
  • a group that needs to eliminate one person, flawed characters, a magical library, can’t trust anyone
  • entertaining and cool world building

Why you might not want to read it:

  • pacing was off, slow at times, especially getting to know 6 people and their motivations while trying to keep things mysterious
  • I felt like it was a contest to see who was the most loathsome character lol

My Thoughts:

I can see the hype about this book and I can also see why people didn’t like it. It definitely seems like the type of book that you either love or hate. I enjoyed it but maybe because I went in with lowered expectations and waited for the hype to die down. I found the six characters very flawed and yet fascinating. I was trying to figure out who I would kill off if I was in the group. Now as for their pursuit of knowledge – it’s slow and you really have to get to the end to find out why these people were chosen. I found the world building fascinating but I also want to know more so I’m definitely reading the second book when it comes out in two weeks.

I got a chance to read this one because it was offered as a read now arc on NetGalley and I thought why not? It sounded interesting but somewhere 30% into the story I was losing interest. By the time I got to 50% I decided to skim the rest of the book. So here’s what did and didn’t work for me:

+ I think the mixture of historical events happening in Imperialist Russia intermingled with fantasy elements is fascinating. The world building of different monsters and people with powers is really cool and different. Especially Toma’s powers of stitching people up and making them come back to life after death.

+ I thought Vanya and Toma were interesting characters. Mikhail is a tsar but he wasn’t my favorite – he was just a little to stiff. Vanya is charming and Toma is always helping people. This trio was interesting. I thought there was something brewing between Mikhail and Vanya but wasn’t sure. And then maybe Vanya and Toma?

~ Story moved a bit too slow for me at times which is why I lost interest.

~ This definitely would be a mood read for me and clearly I wasn’t in the mood. So although the book isn’t for me I think many people who like Russian inspired fantasy would enjoy this story.

Though I ended up skimming this book because it was not holding my interest, I did think the world-building was interesting. I just think I wasn’t in the right mood or I’m not the right reader for it but I know plenty who will enjoy this book.

Veterinarian and animal lover Kara Ingalls needs a Christmas miracle. Opening the Meow and Furrever Cat Café to find loving homes for adorable, adoptable cats was a dream come true—but with more cats than customers, it’s quickly turning into a nightmare. If Kara can’t figure out some way to get the café out of the red, it won’t last past the holidays.

Marketing guru Ben Reese may be annoyingly smart and frustratingly bossy, but when he hatches a plan to put the café in the “green” by Christmas, Kara realizes that she’d be a fool to turn down his help. Holiday romances always have a predictable outcome which is what I want, but I love how this story involves happy endings for many cats needing to be adopted. Here’s what did and didn’t work for me:

+ Kara is a veterinarian who runs a non-profit cat cafe. Right off the bat we know she’s a good person with a good heart who clearly loves cats. But we also learn she has a tarnished past. Will her past ruin the success of her cat cafe? She hopes not.

+ Kara and Ben have a slow and sweet relationship. It’s not rushed, they take things slow and they really become friends first. They were matched pretty good I think but they did have their own trust issues because of their past relationship.

+ Not only did I love all the description of cats before each chapter but I think cat cafe’s are great (I’ve only been to one). And the secondary characters like Charity and Schwartz really stood out to me. Charity is Kara’s best friend and Schwartz is Ben’s coworker/friend. I like that the friends were there for Kara and Ben! Do we get a story about Charity or Schwartz? Because I’d love to read one about them and more about the cat cafe.

+ This is a great holiday romance which starts at Thanksgiving. But we get the Christmas vibes because of all the events surrounding the cat cafe fundraising plus, Kara and Ben sharing their likes and dislikes about the holiday. Ben reminisces about his family in Boston and Kara has her own family memories also. I also like how Schwartz is Jewish and mentions Hanukkah. But as a Christmas romance I think this one definitely check off all the boxes.

~ There wasn’t much conflict between Kara and Ben and when there was I think it resolved fairly easily. It also isn’t a huge enemies to lovers story because I felt like they put differences aside fairly quickly.

~ Could use more chemistry between since they didn’t like each other at first but I do have to say I did that they settled into a cozy, slow relationship instead of one that burned quick.

Why you might not want to read it:

  • not much conflict
  • would be nice to have a little more chemistry

My Thoughts:

A Cat Cafe Christmas is a light-hearted holiday romance that will give you lots of cozy feels especially if you love cats. I love all the cat descriptions from each chapter and how Kara had a good heart trying to find them homes. I thought the romance between Kara and Ben grew gradually into something warm and comforting for both parties, but would have loved some sizzle. There were good secondary characters and getting to know the cats was awesome as well It made me want to get a cat and I can’t say that I am a cat person, since I’ve only had dogs but this book made me want one. Overall, if you are looking for a sweet holiday romance, try this one!
