Dini’s Questions:

Describe your current read in five words:

chemistry – food – southern belle – italian hottie – competition

What is your go-to comfort genre?

I’m go to comfort genre will always be romance! Whenever I need a break from fantasy, I head on over to contemporary romance and it’s a much needed vacation for my brain.

What’s your favourite song at the moment?

The whole Encanto soundtrack lol

What’s been your favourite read of 2022 so far?

It’s a backlist title but I haven’t read a 2022 published book yet that has been a 5 star read….mostly because I haven’t bought any, but there are a few I’m eyeing out so hopefully I can get a hold of them soon.

Is there one book that you would do anything to get a special signed edition of?

A Jane Austen book lol which is impossible so maybe a Sarah J Maas one or Holly Black since I have their books on my shelf.

What’s a disappointing book that you’ve recently read?

I am struggling through this arc! It’s taking me forever and I thought her first book was good, but the last arc I read from this author and then this one I’m trying to finish has made me struggling to connect to any of the characters. I don’t know what it is. 😞

How long have you been blogging?

It will be 4 years of blogging this year – wow!! I feel like I just started 2 years ago. How time flies!

What are some of your favourite tropes?

Enemies to lovers is my absolutely favorite. I also love friends to lovers. Bad boy/good girl is always fun, I mean…it’s so hard to resist the bad boys!

Is there a (sub)genre that is an absolute no-no for you?

Reverse harem because I don’t like sharing LOL. Also bully romances – I used to read a few because it was very enemies to lovers…and then some. But now the “and then some” edge just makes me want to punch the guys’ face if he is too much of a bully, it makes me want to get violent in behalf of the girl even if she loves him that way. 🤣 I can’t stand it.

If you could visit one fictional world, where would you go?

Probably to Velaris (A Court of Wings and Ruin) because it’s hidden and protected. But yes definitely into a fae world just because I love stories about the fae…even though they can be quite scary.

Name five characters you would love to spend a day at a theme park with!

I think it would be so much fun to spend the day with Savvy and her two besties, Maggie and Kotter. The three of them had so much fun together in Savvy Sheldon Feels Good as Hell – I can only imagine how much fun they would be at a theme park.

Also, I’d have fun with the guys from XOXO, especially Nathaniel and the younger guy who’s name I can’t remember!

The Liebster Award | 11/16/20

Thank you to the Monogamist Reader for nominating me for The Liebster Award! I haven’t done one of these in awhile so I appreciate the nomination. 😘

Rules:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you
  • Answer the 11 questions the blogger asked you
  • Nominate 11 bloggers
  • Ask your nominees 11 questions
  • Notify your 11 nominees

Questions from the Monogamist Reader:

  1. Name a book that you thought “Damn, I wish I wrote that”.

So many fall into this category so I’ll have to stick to 2020 books – I’ll say Legendborn.

2. What is a book that everybody loves but you hate it so much you wish to burn it?

I don’t think I’d burn it haha, because I don’t ever hate a book that much but I never got into the Grisha trilogy. What job would you be doing if you have followed your childhood dreams?

3. What job would you be doing if you have followed your childhood dreams?

An author haha, or artist. I think just these past few months I’ve finally told myself I AM an artist, or a creator (I’m 42 years old, it took me that long) – I’ve been creating things for my own shop on Etsy for the past almost 8 years (with a 2 year break). I wasn’t allowed as a kid to think of art or writing as a career, I’m filipino so my parents said I had 3 options: nurse, doctor or lawyer. 😅 Went for “nurse” until I hit college, then it became sociology major, took art as electives senior year and my art teachers said I should do a minor in art or think about becoming an illustrator or graphic designer! Having that validation from actual art teachers was like…wow (light bulb moment)…I bounced around jobs I enjoyed (massage therapist, then library floor manager, then Etsy business owner). I’ve finally embraced that I’m an “artist”. 🤷🏻‍♀️

4. Name your favourite villain – it could be from movies/books/comics…

Cersi from Game of Thrones show series – she was badass, like I hated her so much but she was complicated and I wanted to see what her next move would be. She did love her kids though!

5. If you could change the ending of a story (again book or movie, or whatever), how would you change it and which one?

Speaking of the GoT tv series, did Daenerys really have to go out that way?! 🙁I’d let her live and let her be Queen of Meereen or something. I was always Team Starks lol but, I loved Dany too.

6. In which order must your books be placed in your bookshelves?

I have no order right now. Series stay together but other than that…maybe by color? I do like when it’s color coordinated.

7. You are offered to go on a mission to Mars. You can bring three fictional characters with you and three personal objects. What would you bring with you and who would be in your space squad?

  • Talin from Skyhunter because she can fight (in case we gotta fight something).
  • Sky Shin from I’ll Be the One to keep the crew lively.
  • Reykin from Secondborn Series because he’s smart, can fight and he’s cute. 🤷🏻‍♀️

8. You are in possession of a time machine but you can visit only one specific geographical place in the past and one in the future. Where would you go?

I think the Philippines in precolonial days – just want to know what my family’s life was like back then, how they lived, what they ate, how they dressed, etc….

9. If you can have a super power, which one would you have?

Communicate with animals. Would love to know what they are thinking.

10. If your biggest fear/or anxiety was your super power, what would it be?

Not my biggest fear but I have a fear of centipedes, if I see one around the house or god forbid the one time it was in our house – I screamed for my husband and ran upstairs. 😂 They are squiggling, scary looking and sting. So if that was my superpower? Yikes, I guess I’d be scary looking with a lot of legs and sting LOL.

11. If you are forced to watch only one movie for the rest of your life – what movie will you pick?

Pride and Prejudice the one with Keira Knightly. I’ve watched it…a lot.

  4. What is your favorite book genre?
  5. What book would you like to see as a movie or tv series?

Liebster Award

Thank you to Emer at A Little Haze Book Blog for my first nomination for The Lobster Award! If you don’t know who she is, click on the link to check out her blog, she is genuine, real and her posts are fun to read.

What is The Liebster Award?

(and yes this info is all copied from Emer’s post since she always does an amazing job researching these awards and I have no patience hahaha)

I found all this information on The Global Aussie‘s page.

“The Liebster Award is an award that exists only on the internet and is given to bloggers by other bloggers. The earliest case of the award goes as far back as 2011. Liebster in German means sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome.”

Rules:

  • Say thank you to the person who has nominated you for the Award.
  • Answer the 11 questions the person has asked you
  • Nominate 11 people
  • Ask the people who you have nominated 11 questions

Questions from Emer:

What is your favourite all time music video? Share a link.

Honestly…I’m a kid of the 80’s and I was glued to MTV when music videos started being a “thing” and I’m sure I could go scour youtube for more recent music videos of current songs but THIS video…brings me back to being a kid, and I thought it was so innovative when I first saw it.

If you could spend a year living in another country where would you choose and why?

Italy because of the food and history.

If you could switch places with any character (book, TV show, or film) for a day, who would you switch with and what would you do?

Seriously? So hard…I’ll say Elizabeth Bennett in the Pride & Prejudice version with Keira Knightley. Haha, I want to be in THAT exact movie though, like I want Darcy to meet me across the field at sunrise and say “I love, I love, I love you…”. Yes just like that, sigh.

What is the best snack food in your opinion?

Potato chips.

Do you like to read the book before you watch its film adaptation?

If I read the book first, then sometimes I will watch the film. But if I watch the film first, most likely I will not read the book.

What’s on your list of top three books that you have read so far in 2019?

Queen of Nothing by. Holly Black

Vow of Thieves by. Mary E. Pearson

Patron Saints of Nothing by. Randy Ribay

What are three things you love most about being a member of the online book community (blogs, book twitter, bookstagram, Goodreads etc.)?

Making new reader friends and finding books I’ve never heard of!

Do you have a bucket list? If yes, what are the top five items on your list? If not, what do you think would be in your top five?

  1. write a book
  2. travel bucket list: Greece, Iceland, China, Japan
  3. Britney Spears concert (yes…I love her. I don’t care if she lip-syncs, I just want to dance my booty off and her music makes me do that.)
  4. Take my kids to the Philippines one day
  5. ??? gosh…I better make add some things to my bucket list – I used to have things like see Prince in concert (but he passed away before I could! 😢)

If they were making a film of your life who would you like to cast as yourself?

Hmm, it would have to be a short filipino actress, I just don’t know many in Hollywood. Vanessa Hudgens? I don’t know, I know she’s half filipino and she’d make me look gorgeous right? LOL

What would you do if you were invisible for a day?

Muahaha, follow my son around at school maybe, just to see how he acts with his friends and teacher. And not in a way where I hope he’s behaving (I know he is), I just want to see his face when he and his friends are laughing or the interesting things he tells his teacher, etc…he’s a good kid.

If you could pick someone to write and perform a song inspired by you, who would you pick?

HARD question!! I’ll say Bruno Mars, because I love him. He’s from Hawaii too so I think he would get me. 😍

How Past Midnight came to be:

Honestly? I wanted to read arcs on NetGalley because money is tight when you have two kids! 🤣 When I was single with no kids, I bought books without a care. Having kids…well, my kids can’t eat books, right?

I found out about NetGalley and I wanted in! I used to blog, years ago…even got paid writing wedding planning articles for blogs so I thought I’ve done this before…mind you I’ve been out of it a few years though. I’ve been a lover of books since I was eleven…I’ve been reading for thirty years so I would consider myself experienced. Then one day in March 2019 I said I’m going to do it. And here I am. I called it Past Midnight because I start reading as I put my daughter to bed at night and when a book is good I read “past midnight”. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It’s been so much fun, I love having access to arcs, I’m back at buying books too because I have a bigger space to house them. I’ve made such awesome friends in the blog world and on social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter. It’s been more than I could have imagined and I love it. 😍

Two Pieces of Advice to New Bloggers:

I think the obvious and best advice would be to be YOURSELF on your blog. Because seriously…that’s the best advice to give! But here are two more pieces of advice that helped me build this blog:

#1 – A thing that helped me a lot with posting everyday even if I didn’t have a book to review is doing book tags, blogger awards (if you are nominated), and weekly memes that bloggers host. There is so much out there! I have two young children that want my attention constantly, even if one is in school, the other is still home with me and we run errands and do activities some days so at times I have no time to read or even post. So PRE-SCHEDULE some book tag posts, or weekly memes for your blog. Currently some weekly prompts/memes I’ve tried are:

All of these are fun, easy and adds some different content to your blog other than book reviews. Especially when you don’t have a book review lined up – these have been a lifesaver for me!

#2 – I’m never satisfied with the way my blog looks, I’m always changing something after a few months. But I found an easy way to add some graphics and that’s by using Canva. It’s how I make blog banners or just add some simple graphics to my page and it’s free! I’m all about free. I paid for one graphic I think and it was only $1. So it doesn’t break the bank at all.

And that’s that! As always you are not obligated to do this post, only if you want to 😘 – here is who I’m nominating:
