Content Warning:

Marlowe is neurodivergent, and for someone who struggles with social cues and expressing feelings, she was doing pretty good. She had the most popular boy in school as her boyfriend, and she was part of the “in” crowd. That is…until her boyfriend breaks up with her and her routine for the past two years is upended.

I thought this was such a cute romance. Marlowe is all about numbers and mushrooms, she’s analytical and her ex complained she wasn’t romantic enough. Yes, she had the golden-haired, perfect Southern boy, jock as her boyfriend but then she gets paired up with the dark-haired boy, Ash, who is in a band and has a lip ring. Her world is turned upside down and I loved seeing it happen! I love the opposites attract trope especially between a boy with a bad rep and a smart girl. But the thing is – Marlowe can’t let go of her routine, she wants Josh back and tries to learn to be more romantic to win him back. Marlowe and Ash help each other out but they fall in love with each other in the process.

There are some really great side characters in this story. I love her two best friends who are as unique as she is but I love how they had her back no matter what. Marlowe wanted Josh back, and even if they hated the idea, they tried to help her make it happen. They gave her space to make her mistakes and learn from them without judging her and that was so cool. I also enjoyed learning about Marlowe’s family dynamics too which play a part in how she feels about relationships.

My Thoughts:

This was such a cute, slow burn, teenage romance that has great side characters, a main character who has growth, and even a grand gesture! The romance progression is so good with Ash helping her get Josh back, to Marlowe realizing she didn’t want Josh back at all but Ash instead. I enjoyed this one and I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

So I thought this would be the last book in the series but I am wrong. It’s the third book and there was a lot going on with flashbacks happening from the present to the past and vice versa.

I did like that Lor and Nadir’s slow burn finally picked up steam and they are committed to one another now. Thank goodness because I don’t think I could wait for another book to see if they got together or not.

Maybe I wasn’t in the right mood to be patient and process everything going on but the flashbacks were taking me out of the story. I do think the story did progress, especially at the end. I did like seeing Lor’s siblings more in this story. The world-building is good, I just wasn’t in the mood to dive into it I think or it was too slow for me at some parts. Everything does pick up at the end but then of course, there is a sudden cliff-hanger.

My Thoughts:

I think it’s good to wait for the last book and then you can binge the series.

This one has a slow start but I didn’t give up on and I’m glad I didn’t.

I love the world-building where magic is based on when a person is born and under what moon. It had the dark, gloomy academia vibes which was nice. I love the secret societies intrigue. We have two POVs from Emory and Baz. Emory survived a ritual that killed a bunch of her classmates, but she wasn’t even supposed to be there. Baz is the older brother of her best friend, Romie, who was lost in the ritual. They are both back at Aldryn College – a college for magic users, but this time Emory has new powers and she and Baz are trying to figure what went wrong during the ritual that went bad and they uncover so many things about magic, lies they were told, and secrets about other worlds.

My favorite characters so far are Baz, Kai, and Vera. Emory, I didn’t love because she kept making mistakes and trusting the wrong people. I didn’t see her as a good person, especially with how she treated Baz! She leads him on for her benefit and he deserves better. I hope there is growth for her in book two – there was some at the end of this one, but she really needs to do much more to win me over.

The beginning was too slow and repetitive at times but it picks up at the halfway mark and from then on it gets good mostly because of Kai, who I love but it just moves faster and has more action. There is a love triangle which infuriated me because I could tell from the start that Keiran wasn’t trustworthy but Emory had to learn the hard way I suppose, because she is so stubborn.

My Final Thoughts:

I definitely wanted to read this one because of the beautiful cover and I love the whole moon magic concept. It’s also an academia book and I was in the mood for it. I didn’t love Emory, the love triangle, or the slow beginning and the repetitiveness of some things that could have probably been cut to shorten this 544 page book. But once it picks up in the middle, I really couldn’t put it down! I love Baz, Kai, and Vera. I love the world building and magic system. I do hope there is growth for Emory in book two because I do not think she deserves Baz at all. I am looking forward to reading book two because of how this one ended. I’m curious to see these other worlds that have been hinted at!

+ My most favorite thing about this book has to be about the chess world. After watching The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix a few years I found the competitive world of chess so fascinating! Maybe because the lead was a female chess player. But I like that about Check & Mate that the lead is a female chess prodigy because we get to see her experience while playing in a male dominated game. I loved all the scenes about the competitions and training even though I have minimal knowledge of chess myself, I found it really interesting.

+ Mallory is a character who is really going through some stuff. A situation with her late dad has left her blaming herself for the state of her family and she feels totally responsible for taking care of them, but she’s only 18 years old. She may be a chess prodigy but she put chess aside when things went down with her dad – and she’s far behind the competition in ranking. She basically knows nothing about the competitive world of chess.

+ The supporting cast is so also one of my favorite parts of this book, especially Oz. He is so cranky and snarky, but I thought he’s snide remarks were so funny. What a personality. And I like that he called Mallory out on her bs when everything fell apart. Mallory actually had a good support system of friends, family and new colleagues but she wasn’t very good at accepting their help because of this guilt she carried inside her. I also particularly liked the rheumatoid arthritis representation, with Mal’s mom. My best friend has rheumatoid arthritis and I’ve see her go through some major challenges all her life.

+~ I thought the romance between Mallory and Nolan was cute and the rivals to lovers trope was fun and full of tension. But I also wanted more from their relationship, but that’s just personal preference – a little more angst maybe? Or just more scenes with Nolan? Mal did keep running from him in the beginning so it’s mostly in the second half that they get more scenes together which is a shame because I wanted him there from the moment she met him. I do think because of both their personalities and past trauma that maybe they both had some things to work through – mostly for Mal though. I loved when they did finally act of their attraction.

~ I did like Mallory’s devotion to her mom and sisters. But her sisters are a handful and sometimes it got annoying. There is a lot of cultural pop and Gen Z references, but I didn’t mind it.

My Final Thoughts:

I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about this one because of all the chess but I loved it! I just wish there was more Mallory and Nolan time in the book and maybe less of Mal’s sisters, but overall I enjoyed this one a lot!

Content Warning:

The narrator for this audiobook did such a good job with the voices and the accent, combined with the author’s awesome storytelling I was swept away into the story.

I didn’t re-read the first book in the series, so it did take me awhile to find my footing in the story. But I remember loving Torin and Sidra’s love story and it continues in this book though they have so many challenges. There is also Jack and Adaira but they are apart a lot in this book which is sad. There is blight ravaging the East and spirits to deal with on both sides.

It is a 500 page book and I felt like it moved slowly, especially it being in audiobook form. I don’t know if I would have the same feeling is I had read the book but it is consistent with book one, which was slow also, but I still enjoyed it.

My Final Thoughts:

It’s a story filled with strife, magic, community and love. I’m glad I got to finally finish this series!

Wow, what did I just read? I haven’t read a Colleen Hoover book in awhile because I do need to be in the mood for her books since they kind of get heavy and I saw this title being hyped up years ago, but was never interested but since I’m in a reading slump, I finally decided to read it.

I read it in one sitting because it shocked me and kept me awake plus it’s a quick read. The first chapter sets the tone with an accident, blood and a coincidental meeting between Lowen and Jeremy. From there the story moves quick where they attend a meeting and Jeremy is there representing his wife who is a big time author of a thriller series that she can’t finish because she’s been in a car accident. They ask Lowen if she can finish the series and from there this story twists into something unpredictable and horrific.

Let me just say some emotions I felt from this book were anger, disgust, fear, shock, and basically was wondering what the hell I was reading! I was definitely getting suspicious of certain things happening and even guessed a few things but yikes what a way to tell this story.

I think it was totally entertaining though if you can get through some of the sick things that happen. Some of the stuff where it affected children was hard for me to read.

My Final Thoughts:

I’ve been in a reading slump and I don’t know if this kicked me out of it but at least it gave me a shock to wake me up a little! What a crazy story, and what an ending. I was gagged, as they say now. It is a psychological thriller so beware for some hard topics, like some of the things that involved kids was hard for me to read. But overall I went for a suspenseful ride of a story and was entertained.

I don’t usually read middle grade books, but when the author of this book asked me to read and review their book and I saw the cover, my curiosity was peaked. I love the book cover because it’s colorful and whimsical plus the synopsis was intriguing.

This story is full of adventure and I thought the world-building was fantastic. The story takes us to a world of creatures and little elves that live in a magical land. We follow two main characters, first one is Wynn who is a swirl-ear and she is searching for the person who stole a special chest she was guarding. Wynn’s story is filled with harrowing adventure and she meets some interesting characters along the way. I love how Wynn has never left her home until now – it reminded me a big of Frodo Baggins from Lord of the Rings, leaving the shire! She learns a lot on her journey about herself and what she is capable of.

The other storyline follows Calla, a flower-elf who is not on good terms with her sister, Saffron but they meet up when she is called to Runnelloom to help with a mission – or that’s what she assumes. When Calla and Saffron are together, we get a sense of their tense relationship and that’s really too bad for two sisters that just lost their mother. But I feel like it’s something that will be worked out, I hope, in the next books of this series.

I did feel more invested in Wynn’s adventure, mostly because her traveling companions Lance and Beryl are such great characters! They made me laugh and I love that Wynn seems to have fallen into a found family situation.

I do wish each chapter told us which character we were following. Also because it’s such a fantasy world full of creatures we’ve never heard of, it took me some time to acclimate myself to the names and phrases they used but there is a glossary which was helpful! For some reason, I was reading this whole thing in my head with a British accent (I’m not British! lol) but I just felt like that’s how these characters would sound.

My Thoughts:

This is a full of adventure, new friendships, quests and magic but also one that deals with some tough issues like strained family relationships, and believing in one’s self and worth. If you are in the mood for a middle grade book that takes you on a fantastical journey, you just might enjoy this one.

I went into this one blind – I saw the book cover, love the colors, thought the synopsis sounded pretty good and hit “read for free” since it’s on Kindle Unlimited. I read it in one night!

I wanted “enemies to lovers” and I got it. Nyra is a runaway princess – her father’s regime is ruthless and she had to escape him. There is a rebellion movement planning to take him down but they are in search of this so-called princess people haven’t seen in awhile. The son of the rebellion is Dacre and he is Nyra’s enemy…for now.

The chemistry between Nyra and Dacre is so good. He’s her captor, she’s the captive. He doesn’t trust her and treats her like she’s a pebble in his shoe but she doesn’t cower. Even when he’s disrespecting her, and insulting her while he trains her, always egging her on – she never cowers in front of him but instead takes it and I guess it even turns her on. I will say that there are qualities to Dacre that are admirable, like obviously he cares for his sister Wren and he is loyal to his people and the rebellion. He has an awful dad and his mom’s death traumatized him so he is hard edges and just – hard. 😅

There’s a lot of spicy scenes between Nyra and Dacre but it comes later in the book, which I thought was perfect timing. It didn’t happen so quick, but it definitely kept me seated and reading, waiting to see if something more would happen – and I was not disappointed!

As far as world-building, I just wanted a little more but because I’m used to it in other fantasy books. I felt like this one is one of those addictive reads with not as much world-building but maybe in comes in book two? A lot time is spent with Dacre training Nyra and the story is mostly set in the rebel city, so I’m hoping book two takes us back to Nyra’s kingdom and we get to actually meet this horrible father of hers.

I devoured this book but unfortunately now I have to wait for book two which comes out in July!

My Final Thoughts:

This hit all my romantasy cravings ~ enemies to lovers, captor/captive, one bed, alphahole and his dirty talk (naughty, naughty!), and this is a world of faeries which I also love but I need a bit more world-building. I want to know more about these fae kingdoms, more backstory and maybe more depth with Nyra (I’m thinking we get it with that cliffhanger ending!) but other than that, I’ll be waiting for book two. I’m addicted!

+ I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue with this series because I thought book two was okay but I guess I’m back because it was in my library and I’ve been trying to read all the books I haven’t in my kindle library so I picked this up and was determined to finished it and I did it in one sitting. This was much better than book two!

+ Thea and her traveling buddies, Kipp and Cal (who I love), are trying to find Wilder Hawthorne, to arrest him, but he’s the guy who broke Thea’s heart and now she’s adamant to never forgive him or fall for him ever again. But that’s hard when he’s basically her soulmate. I’m glad it doesn’t take too long for them to find him because this book is better when Thea and Wilder are together. Now mind you the story states it’s been a year since Thea and Wilder had seen each other so he’s been missing her badly but she’s been turning her heart into stone the whole time. I really like how they have to face some things about their relationship. Their desire for one another is undeniable and I’m glad they don’t lean on that to make their relationship work – they actually do the hard part and confront the issues between them.

+ Speaking of confronting issues, which I loved about this book, Thea gets a chance to finally talk face to face with her long lost sister, who was supposed to be the enemy. It’s a hard talk, but it’s the beginning of healing which is so awesome for them. Now just waiting for Wren to come around to it all and then this sisterhood will be complete. I love that about this book that even though it’s a romance, Thea has so many other important relationships in her life that she has to fix – especially everything going on with her sisters.

+ Thea grows so much from learning to have the hard talks with important people in her life. It’s not always so easy to forgive the people that hurt you but she does it even if it hurts some more. Also, her friendship with Cal and Kipp, is what friendship should be about. She has two people that is close to her who will talk to her and tell her when things don’t look right. And she was mature enough to listen. Oh and I really love when she has to go through the Great Rite to finally become the warrior she’s always wanted to be. It’s a mental and physical trial and doesn’t take up a lot of time in the book but I thought the Furies were just so cool.

+ This is a romantasy – romance/fantasy and yes we get some spice between Wilder and Thea. But I love that it doesn’t come until later while they are trying to figure things out because like he said – it needed to be figured out! He wanted her whole, not just for sex and distraction, and he wanted her only when she was ready to be in it 100% with him. I love them together.

My Final Thoughts:

I believe I still have Slaying the Shadow Prince in my kindle library as well so I will read it next because it’s about an important character in this world. But Fates & Furies was really an enjoyable read filled with themes of family, friendship, love and forgiveness. I love how much Thea has grown from book one and I can’t wait to see what happens in book four! This series has everything I enjoy in a romance fantasy!

I finally read a book by this author and I can see why there is so much hype around her books! I love the fairy-tale aspect of Nettle & Bone. I felt like I was lured in by the wonderful writing and then I was just enjoying this journey that Marra and her friends go on. Marra is a princess who is trying to save her sister from her horrible husband but she needs help in doing so. I thought she was an interesting character, the sister who is put away in a convent but she makes it her mission to save her older sister.

The group of characters that come together to go on this quest to kill the Prince who is married to Marra’s sister, is fantastic. I loved their dynamic and interactions, especially the two older ladies, the dust-wife and Agnes (the godmother). Even though they are taking on a dark type of mission, there was so much humor too.

Of course, I loved the strange pets in this story – Bonedog and Finder! There is even a tiny bit of romance that happens for Marra, which was kind of cute.

As far as this being categorized as horror – I was like…where is the horror? I was expecting something darker and maybe some gruesome scenes but nope. This almost felt like a cozy fantasy. This will definitely appeal to the fans who are not fans of horror.

My Final Thoughts:

I love the fairy-tale story telling and the amazing characters and animals that we meet in this book. Even though Marra’s journey to kill a Prince is wrought with challenges, her motivations for doing it comes from her love of her sister. I love that she found the strength to want to try and save her. This was a fun and quick read!
