I got this book on my online library and really haven’t read many reviews for it or wasn’t sure what to expect but I really enjoyed it. Here is what I thought:

+ I like the other series this author wrote, so I was definitely interested to see how this book would pan out. I love the writing because it’s full of action, secrets, a fallen kingdom, a people trying to hold on to their culture and heritage and passing on their knowledge. There is magic, there are demons, and even a tiny bit of a romance.

+ I thought Lan was a intriguing character – she’s a song girl, but she has a mysterious seal on her arm and I was invested in her story to want to desperately find out what that seal on her contained! This book is about power and the consequences of power when there is no balance – and Zen’s character really exhibits the fight inside himself, trying to control a demon, trying to contain his anger against the Elantians and wanting to not be helpless against them anymore. I sympathized with both characters and the rest of the Hin who was trying to preserve their culture and family name.

+ The magic system is really cool and uses the power of qi. I love how the practioners (magic masters) have these amazing skills to fight and write magic seals. It made me wish I could see this book on the screen, just to witness these battles in action. There were really cool scenes in this book, especially the one where Zen and Lan are at the Guarded Mountain and the climax, big fight at the school was amazing as well.

+ The romance is so slight, barely there and with the way things end. It’s not looking hopeful at the moment, but I can’t wait to read book to see where the story goes.

~ The villain is so villainous, I hated him and was rooting for Lan to somehow take him down but it didn’t happen. They need more to take him and the Elantians down and it’s one of those books that makes me want to read the next and the next just to see them taken down.

~ The only thing that took me awhile to grasp at times was the magic because it had to deal with yin and yang and qi. Lan does grasp everything fairly quick even though she’s only training for about 2 weeks – but it’s due to her bloodline.

I went into this one not really knowing what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this story. I love the action and the whole story was just pure entertainment. There were moments I just was protective of Lan and Zen and I really, really want that villain to be taken down. I’ll be eagerly waiting to see where this story takes these characters in book two!

I have finally read this book and what a book it is! Here’s what I thought:

+ Elspeth is such an interesting character, especially with a Nightmare in her head – who’s been in her head for 11 years! I loved the both of them together because Elspeth is just trying to live her life hiding all these secrets and here is this voice in her head, annoying her at all times. The Nightmare brought the humor!

+ I love all the gothic, dark, horror vibes of this story. I love the uniqueness of the Providence card, the magic surrounding them, the lore and how they were created. I like the quest of trying to find the remaining cards, the riddles and rhymes are fun and I don’t usually like possession unless it’s done right, and I think this one is done great!

+ The romance is fun, maybe a little insta-love, but I love it anyway. Ravyn is the captain of king’s guard, and Elspeth is the daughter of the former captain. The two are mistrustful of one another until they decide to work together and from there the sparks fly between them. There is a steamy scene but it’s not descriptive at all and over and done with quickly.

~ The only issue I had was it took me a bit too long in the beginning to figure out how the cards work. But once I pushed through and the story went on, it made more sense. I think it’s a cool magic system, especially with the lore tied into it.

I did not read Amy Lea’s other book Set On You but I did have my eye on it. When I saw this on NetGalley I thought it sounded cute so I requested it. Here’s what I thought:

+ This is book is an ode to romance novels and tropes! I thought it was so cute because Tara is a nurse/booktoker or book influencer and her outlook on romance is based on romance tropes. Her roommate Trevor is a hot firefighter, sometimes grumpy, not a big talker and someone not into relationships. I thought it was fun to see them as roommates, to friends to something way more than friends.

+ The romance is such a slow burn but the pay off in the end was worth it! It’s got a great intimate scene, and the sweet ending. I thought it had enough of everything! The build-up from roommates to friends was so nice too see and fun, and the intimate moments had enough sizzle. Tara and Trevor are now one of my favorite couples. I mean she got Trevor into reading!

+ Tara is a fun character! She’s kind of a dreamer and has her head in the clouds when it comes to romance – you can blame that on her books. I can totally relate though. She’s a bit rash in her decisions about guys and awkward too but I thought it was kinda cool how no matter how many rejections she was getting she kept marching on for the search for love. Trevor was perfect as her counterpart because he was not as outspoken as Tara, definitely more level-headed, but someone who was going to take care of her as a friend and something more. I really loved that about them.

+ I laughed out loud a lot with this one – it’s fun!

~ Although I do love Tara, there were some times I wanted to shake her out of her romance tropes thinking. I am not someone who goes back to Exes. They are Exes for a reason so I was already against her plan to find her true love in her list of ex’s. But it made things entertaining for sure!

~ I kind of wish I read Set On You because Crystal Chen, Tara’s sister is in this book and I don’t know her love story with Seth. So maybe read that book first? I did get confused at how quick Trevor and Tara knew one another before being roommates but it’s because they met on Set On You.

I love this story! It gave me all the feelings I want in a rom-com and yes it actually made me laugh. Tara and Trevor will be added to my favorite couples. How could I not fall in love with a book lover like Tara and a fire-fighter with a big heart like Trevor? I look forward to reading more from this author!

I went into this one without expectations! I saw the book cover on my Overdrive online library selections and thought the synopsis was intriguing so I borrowed it without reading any reviews on in. I was so pleasantly surprised and touched. Here is what did and didn’t work for me:

+ A ghostwriter who can see ghost and falls for someone who is a ghost?! I love the idea and the story. Florence is a young woman, nursing a broken heart. It’s made it impossible for her to continue writing the romance novel she is working on and on top of that her beloved father dies. So it’s not only a romance, it’s a story about Florence trying to figure out heartbreak, grief and what love really is. It’s a beautiful story.

+ Her family is one of my newest favorite fictional families. They own a funeral home and even though Florence doesn’t totally get along with her younger sister, you can tell the bonds between this loving family is tight even when their father dies. I also love the people from her home town and her best friend in New York. We get both the small town romance and big city one too in this one book.

+ The romance between Florence and Ben is so cute and honestly I did figure out how things were going to end up but I was going to be so upset if it wasn’t that way. I love how they get to know one another – realistic? No, but that’s why I love how this is a paranormal romance. The two of them melted my heart.

+ Florence and her family are grieving but I so love how they celebrate her father’s life. Did I cry in a few spots? Definitely did.

~ My only issue with the story was the beginning where I thought I was getting a straight romance and then the story took a left turn with the death of Florence’s father and the whole situation with Ben which I won’t spoil. But the story smoothed out right after that.

Tropes: seeing ghosts, small town and big city romance, editor/writer romance

Spice Level: 🌶

My Thoughts:

I loved this one. I was all for the ghostwriting and ghost-seeing! It was unexpected and I went in with no expectations and maybe because my trauma with grief, I resonated with stories about grief. But even though there is death and loss in this book, I love that it still was a story about celebrating life, love, and those who have gone but linger. A wonderful story that melted my heart and made me shed a few tears as well.

I got this book from Book Outlet and decided to make it the book I would read when waiting for my kids in the car pick up line. Well…that didn’t work out so this book was in my car for a few weeks! lol I finally took it out, sat down and read it and I didn’t expect this one to make me emotional, but it did.

+ Lila has a mental breakdown because she got dumped by her boyfriend, her best friend stopped being friends with her and her grandmother died. I loved her character growth throughout the book. She’s stubborn, strong willed and pushy but eventually learns to slow down and listen to the people in her life.

+ Lila and Orion’s love story is a slow burn and so, so sweet. I really liked how it went from a friendship to something more. I love how they fed each other through food and emotions. She fed him Cuban food, he brewed her tea and it was perfect! It made me hungry for Cuban food and afternoon tea all at one time!

+ I loved the side characters like Jules, Flora, Remy and Lila’s Aunt Cate. Family is a big theme in this book as well as friendship but Lila comes from such a big, tight-knit Cuban family that it was so important to her every aspect of her life.

+ Lila is grieving her grandmother, her best friend and her ex-boyfriend and I found myself emotional at times because it is a story about changes and dealing with a new normal. It’s true some friendships don’t last, definitely true some loves end and because it’s life we lose people to death, which is natural. But it can be so much – too much – at one time and Lila really did have to untangle and work through many difficult emotions. She had to learn to be kind to herself and see what she was doing.

~ Though realistic, I was hoping there would be some happy ending for her and her best friend, Stef who we hear a lot about but never get to really meet. It’s sad that their friendship just ends…amicably but still.

I found myself getting very emotional in some parts of this book especially when Lila has to make choices about where she belongs. I love her and Orion together, they really did feel like a cozy sweater kind of love, and exactly what Lila needed. I fell in love with their sweet friendship and love. The themes about grief, roots, and family…blood and found, really resonated with me. I look forward to reading more from this author and even to see how the movie turns out!

All I knew of this book was it was based on mythology and the cover had to be one of the most beautiful cover’s I’ve seen this year. I finally got to read this and let me tell you, this pulled so hard at my heart strings. 🥺 Here’s what worked and didn’t work for me:

+ I read somewhere that this story has inspirations from Spirited Away, one of my favorite movies and I found this out after reading the book. But sure enough during my reading of this book I thought it reminded me of that movie, and there was even a line in the book where she wrote “spirited away”. The characters and world-building definitely had that same feel of Spirited Away where spirits, ghosts and Gods walk the world.

+ I love Mina and how she got into her predicament because she loved her brother so much. Let me tell you, all the family references in this book pulled at my heart, I even almost teared up at the end! But it was happy tears I wanted to cry. Mina as a character fights for her loved ones and doesn’t let the word “no” stop her. She is determined to break the curse of the Sea God to save the people she loves. She has a beautiful heart.

+ The characters are great especially Shin and my other favorite Namgi! And because Mina is basically in the underworld, she runs into people who have passed. It’s part of the reason I wanted to cry at the end of the book.

+ The writing is beautiful and the story itself is filled with little myths here and there that Mina is remembers or tells. There is a romance and it starts off as an enemies to lovers situation until Mina unveils the secret of the Sea God. I love how it unfolded and how sweet the ending is.

~ I did have to get acquainted with this world in the first few chapters. I like that we jump right away into the story without any background but once she is is in the Spirit Realm, I feel as disoriented as Mina so I felt like her, I had to get my bearings. Once I do, the story sweeps me away. The conflict of the story, doesn’t have a big impact, there is a battle but it’s resolved quickly.

~ Even though we meet Shin in the beginning I started to suspect some things about him and I was right, which isn’t a bad thing – it made me look forward to see how the book would end.

Tropes: soul mates, mythology retelling, chosen one

Why you should read it:

it’s an enchanting, magical story about Mina who has a big heart
the romance between Mina and Lord Shin starts off as enemies but it’s a sweet ending for them
this story is about choices, consequences, family, friendship, loneliness and just caring for one another

Why you might not want to read it:

might read too young for some people – it’s a light fantasy not high fantasy
slow beginning

My Thoughts:

I wasn’t sure what to think in the beginning of the story but by the end, I was in love with it. I love Mina’s heart and Shin’s protectiveness even though at first he comes off as hostile. I love the Spirit Realm (it has Spirited Away vibes), and the fun side characters. This one made me want to cry with all the talk about family – it really is a beautiful story with a gorgeous book cover to match.

I absolutely loved this book because it’s got romance and a dog with an attitude!

Isla is trying to recover from a shattered career as a social media consultant because she messed up really bad with her last client. Theo is one of the richest men in New York City, who’s beloved grandmother has passed and left him with her very challenging dog, Camilla, who is a dachshund that thinks she runs the world. He’s gone through many pet-sitters only to run out of luck until he meets Isla.

Isla is miss sunshine. She holds her head up even after the most disastrous career mistake ever, but she moves on because she has no choice. Isla is in her 20’s but is an older sister/mom to her younger sister – their mom deserted her so it fell to her to be Dani’s caretaker and guardian. I love their sisterly bond and you can just feel in the book that Isla is a good person. Theo on the other-hand is anti-social. He has his reasons and abhors social media. He has had to deal with losing his parents at a young age, and now his grandmother ,who took him in when he was an orphan. He has lost everyone he’s loved so naturally he is protective of himself. Theo is known as a hermit because know one really knows him or has seen him around.

When Isla and Theo meet and interact, the attraction grows quickly. I like how her friendly nature got him to come out of his shell. They are perfect for one another. They go through some challenges in the end but nothing major. I thought their romance was very sweet and spicy.

Camilla the dachshund is something else! But we learn she has a history too and all she was reacting to was missing the person who showed her love. Her antics were hilarious though and I thought Isla’s instagram account of her was clever. Who doesn’t love pets on social media?

I love that they become this small little family in the end.

cute love story, lots of laughs but also heartwarming moments between family and friends

the relationship might seem like it happens fast but I think because it’s a quick read I had no problem with it – but other readers might want more of a buildup

My Thoughts:

I love this story – it has everything I could want in a romance: humor, heartwarming moments between family and friends, a little spice between Isla and Theo, a dog with trust issues and a Vogue cover shoot, and a happily ever after. If you want a light hearted, romantic comedy that features romance and a sassy little dachshund then you will enjoy this book!

I liked this one so much better than book two and almost gave it 5 stars but the slow burn is way too slow haha.

Roh and her group of friends travel to the next location to find the next gem for her crown. They take a harrowing journey to Csilla and encounter so much challenges and danger. When they get to Csilla we learn more about the past between Roh’s mother and the current queen. More secrets are revealed and this time we also get some backstory about the Water Warlocks and what atrocities their people were subjected to.

Roh has more character growth especially when it comes to finding her confidence, making the right decisions, and knowing who to trust. I love that the friendship between all of them has grown tighter.

As for the romance, finally something happens and my wait has come to an end at least. I do think the slow burn was way too slow and I had to wait for book three to get more action between Finn and Roh but I guess it was worth the wait. Of course then a twist in events once more makes Roh doubt herself. The torture for Roh is never-ending, she goes through a lot of turmoil in this book! I hope she gets a really good ending in the next and final book. But what I love about her is that she grows in each book in the series.

I do wish this series was a trilogy but I get with these kinds of series on Amazon that the release dates are a shorter wait than books from bigger publishers. I love that I don’t have to wait too long but also wish the story wouldn’t go on forever.

Why you should read it:

to continue the series – great story-telling
slow burn romance, finally we get some action between Roh and Finn
Roh’s character growth, lovable characters

Why you might not want to read it:

not into a long series…seems like it’s going to be a 4 books series – you might want to wait for the last book to be out and binge it

My Thoughts:

I love this installment to the series! It really had everything: action, danger, friendship, romance, plot twists, back story and it even ends really good! It setts up for an exciting conclusion in the next book I hope. I’ve come to love the characters and am rooting for Roh (queen or not) to make the best decisions and trust the small circle of found family around her. I look forward to reading the next book in the series and more from this author.

It’s 1989 and the Berlin Wall has come down (I remember watching that on TV), and all around Romania it seems that the Iron Curtain is coming down. As a young kid I only knew what I saw on TV but this book right here gives me an insider view that is really amazing. What I love about this author is her research – it is always so in depth. It’s one of the reasons I love adult historical fiction but as a young adult fiction, she really does such a fantastic job of capturing historical events through the eyes of young people.

Cristi or Cristian is just a 17 year old kid living in Romania. His whole community, the whole country in fact is under surveillance of the government. Say anything bad about their leader and the Securitae will come after them – just like how they were coming for Cristi’s grandfather who is very outspoken about their leader, Nicolae Ceaușescu. But the way Romania is under surveillance is the sad part – it is country men informing on one another – but they do it so they can survive the dire conditions in Romania. Can you imagine living somewhere with barely heat in freezing winters and not being to trust anyone around you? The outside world doesn’t know how they go to school six days a week, how everything they watch on tv is state run, or how they are barely surviving on scheduled rations. To get any good services or products in the community you have to barter with a pack of Kents cigarettes! And Cristi loves his grandfather, and he wants to do anything to help him out even if that means betraying someone. But Cristi finds out the truth about who is betraying who in his life.

I liked Cristi and glad he had the influence of his brave grandfather. I loved the hopeful message of first love with a girl at school Lilliana, even in such tough times. You can feel Cristi’s despair and frustration at the government and his yearning to do something impactful, even at the cost of his life. I think this story resonates so much because of current events happening between Ukraine and Russia.

The only issue I had was the ending part when the revolution started and then it ended – I thought it was too fast. The story is a build up to it with the distrust around Cristi, it’s a slow beginning but I’m glad we got a sense of how dire it was in Romania but I would have like more of the revolution part because it is so inspiring. The epilogue is fantastic as we learn about the secret files the Securitae kept on all the surveillance going on in Romania. It is truly astounding the lengths the government went through to keep people in line, keep people in fear and separated from the outside world.

As always with historical fiction we get a bit more extra information from the author in the notes. I always love seeing that in the author’s notes.

it’s inspiring and relates to current events
you love historical fiction and beautiful writing

Ruta Sepetys is a must read author for me because I learn something every time I read one of her books. I was so young when this moment in time happened in Romania so to look back now and read it as an adult, it makes me realize that I missed a lot of information or was too young to understand what has happening thousands of miles away from me. It’s important to hear these stories and she does a great service by telling them with her beautiful writing.

Mystery is not the genre I reached for first but I heard so many good things about this book so when I saw it available on Overdrive online library, I had to borrow it.

I found this story intriguing and I was engaged throughout the whole book. I love the writing and how the story is written. It’s great story telling. Sometimes mysteries can bore me, but the pacing of this one is perfect. I had no clue who to suspect in the killings and that was a nice surprise!

Hyeon is a uinyeo which is like a nurse, or a medical woman, and there has been uinyeos being killed at the palace. There is talk about the Prince being a killer because he has an uncontrollable temper, so he remains the number one suspect until Hyeon investigates. And no she isn’t a detective and there are already people on the case, one young man in particular, Eojin, but she feels she owes it to find out who the real killer is to clear the name of her mentor.

I liked Hyeon’s determination and how Eojin how helpful she would be to the investigation. I thought Hyeon’s home life was sad with her mom basically neglecting her and her dad being so cruel. It’s part of the reason she was so deep into this investigation.

It’s a fantastic mystery that moves quickly, keeps you on your toes and there is the most innocent of all romances blossoming in the middle of it.

you are not into historical fiction/mysteries

My Thoughts:

I enjoyed this one a lot and the writing is so good that I have the urge to read all of this author’s previous work. The fact that it didn’t lose my attention, especially when I’m not a big reader of mysteries, is because the writing is so great. I was engaged in the story, wasn’t sure who the killer was and adored the sweet romance story that was taking place in the story as well. Overall, a great book!
