+ This is book 3 in the series and in my review of book 2 I said I was not going to continue this series. Why did I? Well I needed an audiobook to listen to while completing a 1000 piece puzzle 😅 but honestly…I was genuinely surprised at how much more I liked this book than the first 2. And I think it’s because the story has come together now – but I wish it didn’t take 3 books to make that happen. I did hear this is a 5 book series.

+ Kierse is working with Graves to find the stone that can help break the soul mate bond with Lorcan. While on the search for this stone though there is another subplot in connection with Fae being killed and now sorcerers too? So the fun part about this story is the urban fantasy setting plus the found family that Graves and Kierse has reluctant put together. The heists in the book really shows off everyone’s skills. Kierse is excelling in being a thief as usual. Graves, the mastermind of the group, was always researching and plotting. Lorcan, Kierse’s soul mate who refuses to leave her, was there for some of the action too just to keep her safe.

+ There is a lot of different magic use which was interesting and then the whole thing about the trees. I’m amazed I kept interested in the audiobook with so much going on. Usually I would lose interest, but I did think the magic system was fascinating.

+ The narrator did such a great job with this large cast. She had all kinds of accents too – really fantastic job. If I read this as an ebook I might have found it slow but she really kept me invested in these characters.

+~ I did like Kierse and Graves together and seeing their relationship move forward. They get pretty spicy also. But at the 80% mark of the story, things started to feel like the book was getting a bit too long. The romance is a never ending love triangle where Kierse explicitly chooses and loves Graves, but can’t deny the bond with Lorcan too. So that was driving me a little bit crazy – almost to the point of annoyed by the end of this book because things will just be swinging the other way again in book 4 and I don’t know if I have the patience for it. I feel like Graves is her end game, so why prolong it? I will say the series name The Holly and Oak Cycle, makes so much since because that’s what this series feels like especially in terms of the romance – it’s a cycle! One that I kind of want stopped. 😅

~ Also near the ending of this book, I was getting annoyed with Kierse. Yes she’s a badass thief, great, but there are times she just doesn’t listen. And that leads to some disastrous consequences at the end.

Final Thoughts:

Surprisingly, I enjoyed this one more than book one and two. I’m not sure if I will continue the series or just wait until the last 2 books are out. I like the urban fantasy setting and the found family, but the romance is a little frustrating.

World Building: Khalani and her friends are free from the underground prison of Apollo but are now trekking the surface without radiation suits to find Hermes. The landscape is dry, hot and lack water and food. They do come upon a walled dwelling where people live but are at war with another local group. But when they finally get to Hermes, they realize how different it is from Apollo. So there are a few different situations that happen in this book that I enjoyed because it kept the story moving.

Characters: Khalani has some growth when it comes to leadership. She’s the heart of the group I think because she brought her found family together. Do I wish at times she wasn’t so naive? Yes. She’s someone who gets deep in her feelings and writes poetry. I want her to be tougher, but that’s not Khalani and I guess I have accepted it. She’s soft where the world is hard, and I know it’s important she keeps that innocence about her. The found family trope is stronger in this one now that they have been together We meet some interesting characters in Hermes and I look forward to learning more about them hopefully in book three.

Romance: Khalani and Takeshi are in a frustrating slow burn romance – they have a push/pull relationship filled with angst. This is where I feel Khalani feels like a younger character. She has no experience with a lot of things, she’s naive and Takeshi does basically everything to show her he is possessive of her but she still thinks he doesn’t care about her. 😅 Just when you think okay, they’ve broken down their walls, it goes back up again. There was some spice between them at least.

Story: I think I enjoyed this one a little more than book one because they break free of Apollo and we get to see the world on the surface. We get more hints about what happened in the nuclear war that destroyed the world and I thought Hermes was a nice change of pace from Apollo. I hope Khalani and Takeshi get it together in book three – it will be another challenge after how this book ends, but I’m looking forward to see how it plays out.

Final Thoughts:

One thing that appeals to me about this dystopian romance is that it’s easy to consume, there isn’t any heavy world building, so it’s an easy read. So far I like how it’s progressed, especially now that the world has opened up. Do I wish the romance would burn a little faster? Yes. But that’s just a personal preference, the angst between them is sometimes too much for me. 😅 I look forward to reading book three.

World Building: So I want to say when I picked this up – I actually thought this was book two of Of Flame and Fury which I loved! And so I was very confused when all this book was talking about was sprites, and harnessing their magic and the legend of the Serpent King. It was only when I looked at the synopsis again and this said it was a standalone in the same “world” as Of Flame and Fury that I had to stop my mind from searching and connecting to anything from that book. Honestly, this didn’t even feel like it was in the same world as the first book. Inna is a Pallo, a notorious crime family who is using the magic of sprites to conduct their business. Ryland, wants revenge on the Pallo’s for killing his. Eventually I thought the sprite magic was interesting (once I realized this was nothing like book one).

Characters: Inna is the daughter of a powerful woman, and went through something traumatic, and she lost her sister Erika. Now she is determined to find out more about who killed her. Celesse is her guard/best-friend/and ex-girlfriend. The two of them have a very complicated relationship which gets even worse when Ryland enters the picture. Ryland wants to take down Inna’s family but first he needs her help to find information on how to find the Serpent King. Another important character is, Fernan, Inna’s uncle who might be conducting some shady business.

Romance: Inna and Celesse used to be lovers and now things are complicated but Celesse is very much still in her life – so I felt like it took some time to really believe Inna had feelings for Ryland. I don’t think I was focused as much on the romance though than I was in Inna’s family dynamics and everything else going on in the story.

Story: Once I realized this was a whole different story than what I was expecting, I had to resettle and get into this story about Inna and her family, sprite magic, and Ryland wanting revenge. And I did get into it during the second half of the book. I enjoyed the complicated relationships, the heist and the betrayals. I know the synopsis said this was a standalone, but I feel like that ending is left open to more adventure? I guess we will see.

Narrator(s): The narrator did a great job voicing all the characters.

Final Thoughts:

My reading experience would have been better if I realized this was a totally separate story from Of Flame and Fury. But once I realized my mistake I started to enjoy the story much more. It does mean though that if you haven’t read Of Flame and Fury, you won’t feel lost picking this up, which is a good thing! I did enjoy Inna and Ryland and how they were enemies then reluctant allies. I liked all the family drama and betrayals too. The sprite magic was very interesting too so I look forward to see what this author writes next.

World Building: Back in the fight for the Continent – Wren is now at the Dagger with other Mods like herself, reuniting with Grayson. Cross is still with his family and the Primes. I do feel like the world opened up more in this sequel but most of the story still takes place indoors. But I did like when they went on missions.

Characters: Wren needs to prove her loyalty to the leaders of the Mods but she’s also guarding the secret of her parents. She grows a lot though and has to deal with a forbidden romance, lost and betrayal. Grayson becomes a main character which I wasn’t expecting, it did make things interesting though. Cross wasn’t in this book much because he was separated from Wren for almost all the story, so I cannot say much about his growth. There is a big secondary cast in this story which I enjoyed getting to know and they each added a lot to the story.

Romance: For me, I have a feeling Cross and Wren will be end game, because you cannot tell me they won’t be after knowing each other (at least in their minds) since they were kids! This forbidden romance is a challenge for them but I didn’t think it was going to break them ~ but I guess it had to happen? Still didn’t expect Wren being with someone else, even though I don’t hate the guy, I just have loyalty towards Cross! 😅 So I will reserve judgment until book three and see what happens. But I didn’t love the triangle, and at times I was frustrated with Wren – because Cross is getting punished for her and she knows he is after seeing his bruises yet. He can’t always be there for her…but he does his best!

Story: The beginning of this book was slow. So slow that I was wondering why people were raving about this book. I feel like it started getting interesting at the 300-ish page mark. A lot of the slow parts was just more training and Wren trying to fit in at the Dagger. I get it, they can’t trust her, but it only was interesting when she went on missions. Pacing was off for me. But there are lots of twists and turns near the end though, so I think that’s why people were raving about this book. I did enjoy the second half way more than the first half.

Final Thoughts:

The beginning was a little too slow for me and then the pacing was a little off until all the twists and turns nearing the end. I did like that the world opened up but I didn’t love the love triangle and Cross was barely in this book. I did like the secrets and betrayals, and all the missions because it brought the action but again, that came in the second half of the book. Overall, I think this was a solid sequel. Will I still read book three? Yes, just to see Wren and Cross get together again, hopefully. 😅

World Building: This is an urban fantasy set in Los Angeles, but one where there are witches and covens. There are power families like the Khatris. Ordinaries are people without magic. And sometimes people can “snap” where magic starts growing in them which makes them unsettled, volatile and dangerous. Katherine is someone who did snap as a teenager but now is an Executor for a coven, so she knows there is hope for those who have snapped.

Characters: Katherine is an Executor or enforcer for the Aestas coven and I like her as a character. She’s had a traumatic past but she cares about the young who has snapped, because she sees herself in them. She wants to do the right thing, always. Silas Khatri, is from a powerful witch family, but he’s lived a privileged life. But now his parents want him to take over a leadership role he doesn’t want. Sylvia is the leader of Aestas and Katherine’s mentor. She has a past with the Khatris and right now she’s trying to keep her leadership role but the Khatris are suspicious of her.

Romance: Silas has a reputations as a charmer, flirt and womanizer but something about Katherine gets under his skin. He is attracted to her right away maybe because she doesn’t like him. But with more time spent together the attraction grows, and even Katherine can’t deny she wants him. There is spice, but I didn’t feel like it was prolonged or too graphic. I did find one of the spicy moments happening at a very interesting time. I would have loved a little more build-up in the romance for them. Though there are some things that happen in the story that indicate these two wouldn’t be together, I was still rooting for them. The ending does feel a little abrupt though.

Story: I enjoyed this urban fantasy and the coven politics. I like the characters like Katherine and her best friend, and even love the attraction between her and Silas. Sylvia was an interesting character because she doesn’t seem like a villain at first but her betrayal is unforgivable. I did feel the ending was abrupt and wonder if there will be a book two? I would love to see what happens with Katherine and Silas!

Final Thoughts:

This urban fantasy has coven politics, witches, betrayal, twists, interesting characters and a romance I want to see more of. I hope we get a book two!

World Building: Four years have passed and Acker and Jovie are living separate lives. Acker is married, but the Bond with Jovie is undeniable. Jovie is queen of Maile and doing a great job of it too. We are back in this world of politics and magic, but this time Acker realizes his dad really does need to be taken down and works to make that happen.

Characters: Acker is stuck in a loveless marriage and still drawn to Jovie because they are each other’s Match, and he goes and gets her. Jovie is actually doing well as queen of Maile, which was nice to see. Of course when the two of them are together there is drama because of what she did to him in book one. I did like the secondary characters, especially Messer and Beau.

Romance: If you don’t like having one of the main characters married and still wanting someone else, then this isn’t for you. It’s messy! I didn’t love that Acker was married to someone else. Acker and Jovie are enemies especially after what she did to him at the end of book one. Acker is married but it is a loveless marriage and he still wants Jovie. Both of them still want each other badly, but also are okay with having revenge hookups with other people, which again, I don’t think I loved. But I was actually surprised how tame the spice was in this book between Acker and Jovie. I was also maybe hoping for more of the emotional connection between them.

Story: I enjoyed the politics. I don’t know how I feel about the time jump – it’s a 4 year time jump and I feel like it definitely let Acker deal with his anger towards Jovie off page. I was expecting more enemies to lovers interactions between them but felt like he worked on the anger issues by the time the story starts. There are some strange things that happen in the story, one involving a spicy scene, but I guess I should not have been surprised!

Final Thoughts:

I think this was a pretty good follow up to book one, especially after the major plot twist that happened in that book. I just don’t think the 4 year time jump worked for me in this one. I think it’s too long of time gone by – but it did bring a calmer than expected Acker into the story, I suppose? But I wanted to see what a betrayal would have done to him right after. By the time they reunite, I feel like Acker has accepted everything and he just wants Jovie. At least Jovie feels bad about what she did. I did enjoy the politics and I think Messer was a stand-out character and maybe his story will be told next?

World Building: Cubby is in a band and all they want to do is make music and make it big but it’s been awhile they’ve been trying. But they finally make a good song and they go on tour. I felt like this story followed the band life, the chaos, the bad and good, with some romance drama.

Characters: Cubby used to be the girlfriend of the lead singer of the band but when he leaves them in limbo, it’s Cubby who writes the music that gets the band back on track. She’s also going through a lot questioning her sexuality (which she didn’t think would be hard since she has two moms), her crush on her best friend Darcy, and even maybe feeling something for bandmate Harry who she is now fake-dating for publicity. Cubby feels a lot and it shows throughout the story. Darcy is her best friend and she stays that way but her relationship with Cubby is complicated because of their attraction and Darcy’s fears of coming out. I thought the band members all had their own quirks which was fun.

Romance: This is a best friends to lovers queer romance. The romance is messy because Cubby is dealing with her bad relationship with her ex, her feelings for Darcy and maybe for Harry. There is a lot of push and pull throughout the story but I like the questions Cubby and Darcy bring up about taking their relationship public. I feel like the thing with Harry didn’t need to be there though, it just made things even more confusing for Cubby and I felt bad for Harry but I guess it’s realistic when someone is trying to figure out their sexuality. I was happy for Darcy and Cubby at the end.

Story: This is a queer romance and I felt like the band life and journey took a big focus of the story, but I enjoyed how the romance was as chaotic as their tour life.

Narrator: The narrator did such a great job with bringing the story to life and there are even songs in there that was sung, which is always interesting to me because it makes me wonder if that’s how the song is supposed to sound? But great job overall!

Final Thoughts:

I enjoyed this audiobook, the narrator did such a great job with getting me invested in the characters. Also I love a story about a band that’s trying to make it big because it’s filled with different personalities and drama just comes with it. The romance was at times messy, with a lot of back and forth but I think it was realistic especially when Cubby and Darcy was trying to figure out what they were to one another and how brave they wanted to be with going public. Overall, I enjoyed this one!

World Building: A duel for possession of the Heart is about to take place between the witch princess, Astrid and the Vatra heir, Prince Zryan. Until plans change. This fantasy world is filled with magic, dragons, and familiars.

Characters: Princess Astrid has trouble casting her magic so she thinks she will die, because she can’t fight Zryan and his dragon. But when things change and Skylar (Zryan’s sister he never knew existed) becomes the one to beat well, the relationship between Astrid and Skylar is the main focus, which I enjoyed since they were opposites – destined to try and kill one another, but becoming friends instead. I did want more from Astrid though because she was training for this duel but she just seemed to be resigned to be the one to die. Zryan comes off like a heartless, cruel prince but there are layers to him too.

Romance: It’s an enemies to lovers and there is an instant attraction between Astrid and Zryan that they fight naturally since they are enemies. They can’t fight for long though and there is some spice between them. I did wish there was more build-up between them.

Story: This story is told with 2 POVs – Astrid gives us the insight into witches, their world, magic and familiars. Skylar gives us the POV of a citizen of Vatra who has been suffering in the kingdom, who hates the king, and wants better for the people. It’s got the usual romantasy factors like rebellion, and enemies to lovers. I enjoyed the familiars, Bastet, Astrid’s familiar was funny! But I do think the pacing was off for me, with some things being repetitive and it just made the story move slow. It took me a few days to read because I kept putting it down. It felt like a young adult book at times also, so that was throwing me off.

Final Thoughts:

It took me a little too long to finish this one because there were many times the story felt like it moved too slow, or felt like a young adult novel (but I was expecting adult). But I did enjoyed the second half much more than the first and I like the familiars. What I really loved was the friendship between Astrid and Skylar that grew even though they were supposed to kill each other. Despite the issues I had with it, I was still entertained but not sure if I would continue the series only because if felt to young adult when I was expecting adult.

World Building: Corinthe is rescued by a vampire, Vander, and her world is changed forever. The world in Dhampira is full of fantasy and different species like vampires, werewolves, witches, trolls, pixies, elves and so much more. Even though it’s full of these species and creatures, I didn’t feel like there was heavy world-building. There is magic use in this story which was interesting but also at times confusing, because it had to do with root words. But the world itself was straightforward where there is a land called Nocta ruled by a vampire king, and there is a secret rebellion against him.

Characters: I did find Corinthe interesting – she learns more about her past when she is brought to Nocta. She has to learn to deal with the vampire king, who is going mad, but also she is arranged to be married to Prince Lorcan. Lorcan and she don’t really get a long at first but that changes later on. She’s more friendly with Vander, who is the captain of the guard and who she shared a journey with to Nocta. Both men play a significant role in her growth, they train her and they both feel something for her. I do wish there was more depth to some of the characters like Vander, or we got to learn more about Corinthe’s mom. At the end we get to meet some important werewolves and witches but maybe there will be more in the second book.

Romance: This is a Why Choose romance, and Corinthe is very open to her situation with Vander and Lorcan. Vander is playful and mischievous, much more light-hearted. Lorcan is closed-off, more cold. I do think the love confessions came a bit too quick, it was at the end of the story, but I feel like maybe it could have waited? Would have loved more of a build-up. But I’m happy it works out for all parties involved. Because it’s a Why Choose romance, the spicy scenes are quite spicy if you aren’t into threesomes.

Story: There are some vampire politics, a secret rebellion, and lots of training for Corinthe but for some reason, but I do wish I felt the danger more from the king. The story moves quick but it does have the usual romantasy tropes. I do wish to learn more about the werewolves and the witches.

Final Thoughts:

This story has a lot of the romantasy elements and tropes – magic, politics, rebellion, different creatures and species, a spicy why choose romance and for the most part I enjoyed it. I would like to learn more about the world – the elves, werewolves and witches but hopefully in the books to come.

World Building: Set in a fantasy world where a kingdom needs to be saved, a nobody named Soli is chosen to go on this important quest – but she has to pass a test first. Once that happens, she journeys with a group of people to find the keys needed to save the kingdom. The story is full of danger and major found family vibes.

Characters: Soli is a Gray Mind – someone who suffers from chronic depression and is marked for it. She’s strong, she’s brave even when she doesn’t want to be, and I thought she was really inspiring. I also thought she was funny. I love how she explained what Gray Mind meant, or tried to make her companions understand what it is. She suffers from a lot of self doubt and there is scene where she enters a depression – but I love the representation. Prince Kaelan is drawn to Soli from the start and wants to be her hero, but I also love how he allows her to be herself and encourages her when she is down. The rest of the characters are great too, there is a prince, a sorceress, a thief and more – I love the found family trope in this story. I love that they come to support and understand Soli.

Romance: Soli and Kaelan are drawn to one another, and there is desire as their relationship grows. I do think it happens kind of fast but the spice isn’t overly done. There are times Kaelan pulls back because he is a prince so Soli is left with him pushing and pulling and I totally understood her frustration with that. I was rooting for them though because I thought they were cute together.

Story: This story focuses on a quest to save a kingdom but I love how the one saving it is a “nobody”. And that nobody being a Gray Mind who a lot of times don’t feel like she can do anything – but she tries. She has a mantra that she repeats to herself, that gets her through hard things – and I related to her a lot on that. I may not suffer from depression but I’ve had hard times and been down or faced struggles and Soli’s story is an inspiration! Only issue I had was the pacing – it starts off strong but it does slow down at some point in the middle but picks up again in the second half.

Final Thoughts:

I love how in this story, a kingdom is about to be saved by a nobody, or a bunch of them actually. Soli’s story has a Gray Mind and suffering from chronic depression is so inspirational because though she has challenges, she faces them, even when she is scared. But the point is she faces them. This book has a great message! The ending sets it up for book two and I can’t wait to see how much more Soli grows in this series!
