+ I love that this audiobook had multiple narrators. They did a great job bringing this story to life!

+ I really loved Vanessa when she was a human. She had her best friend Celeste, who was fun and sweet! I loved her actually, and wish we had more of her. Her being bitten really changes her into a character full of rage and at times I was losing patience with her. In her werewolf world, I loved Una (not sure of spelling), her only real friend because Vanessa doesn’t even think of making any friends.

+ The world-building in this story about this world of werewolves is really good. There is werewolf court politics, and rules that Vanessa have to learn. She goes through instruction in school and learn combat too but she’s not exactly the top of her class. There is also a murder mystery and a few twists.

+ The romance is nothing new. Vanessa desires the werewolf prince, Sin. But she also feels something about his cousin, Calix. It’s sort of a love triangle. The enemies to lovers is more in lined with Calix, whereas a forbidden romance is lined up with Sin.

~ This has so much potential but I did not like the main character Vanessa. I get that she is in shock, and she’s angry and grieving but it becomes so repetitive. She never learns and she’s naive. It was so frustrating. She’s full of rage, which is fine, I love that she wants to fight for her humanity, she wants to find her best friend’s killer. But because of all her rage, she doesn’t get far in her murder mystery investigation and goals because she’s so focused on killing everyone without any power.

~ I didn’t feel the romance between Vanessa and Sin. It starts off as desire, but he ignores her a lot because of his reputation and I didn’t like that. I felt like he could’ve treated her better. But they fall for each other, and I didn’t believe it because Vanessa was easily physically attracted to Calix when she was around him. I actually like that Calix called her out on a lot of things though.

~ This is marketed as young adult, Vanessa turns 17 in the beginning of the book. But there are a few spicy scenes. So if that is a problem for you as a reader, just beware. It’s why I say it’s a young adult/new adult book. Also the characters do curse. I do wish the characters were aged up at least to 18.

Final Thoughts:

The narrators for this audiobook were really good! But all I could think of throughout this whole story is that Vanessa is not made for this werewolf world. She’s not made for the violence and lifestyle and I’m hoping something about that changes in book two. I get that she’s dealing with grief and she’s only seventeen. But her anger was blinding and it made her miss important things happening around her. I hope she gets it together in the next book. Overall, I did enjoy the world-building and politics though, this world is ruthless and violent, and the ending had a big twist. Romantasy and Twilight lovers, will devour this one!

+ I haven’t read a Leia Stone book in awhile but I loved the book cover of Traitor Wolf (something about that pink color!) and saw someone give a good review of this on TikTok so I wanted to try it out.

+ In this world of Elites versus Dregs, Brynn is a Dreg, she’s poor and magicless. But one night looking for food for her starving family, turns her life around. An Elite Heir gives her an invitation to the Arcane Trials – the winner gets magic for themselves and all their bloodline. This could help turn their lives around, but a Dreg has never been in the trials, and no one wants her there. As a competitor in the trials she has to bond with a wolfkin (a werewolf), who will protect her, and she bonds with Kaelric.

+ This is a fast moving story with the usual tropes found in a romantasy novel. There is secret identity, magic, magic trials, a sword that speaks into Brynn’s head, fated mates, the rich versus the poor, and a little romance.

+~ I think the romance grew too fast. One moment Brynn is very annoyed with Kaelric, but he’s handsome and helps her out with the trials and her family, so she falls in love with him. It’s also convenient that they are mates, but I just felt like all of it happened too easy. So I actually liked the ending, because there is conflict between them and I actually liked that this one isn’t spicy. Maybe in the next book? Not sure.

~ The world-building is sparse, so it makes it an easy read, but I wanted just a little more. But that’s just me – for anyone who doesn’t like heavy world-building, you will like this one.

~ The trials went by fast and felt a little weak. No one wants her there but there wasn’t really a villain, and I don’t count Corvessa because she was barely in the book. Yes, she wanted to take Brynn out but we know basically nothing about this villain. Even Cassian, who is Brynn’s sponsor, we know a little about him but everything felt a bit surface level.

Final Thoughts:

I thought this was an easy read. I’d say it’s light fantasy, very surface level and the type of book you can binge in one sitting. I’ll definitely be reading book two to see some character growth and also to see where the story goes.

+ Cordelia is a witch but then she gets taken by a mysterious man, Bishop Daniels. She finds out right away that she is not only a witch but half werewolf. You get thrown into the story without much build-up so it’s a fast start.

+ I did like how this story moved quickly. We learn about Cordelia’s father, Silas, who is the alpha of a werewolf pack and Bishop is part of the pack. I like the Victorian setting, Bishop is such a proper gentleman of a werewolf, even though he is dangerous. There is a lot Cordelia has to learn about the werewolves, and there is even betrayal I didn’t expect at the end.

+ The romance is a slow burn, I liked the progression, but maybe would have loved more interactions between them to see the build-up of their feelings. Cordelia’s father is forcing her to marry Bishop just for the sake of breeding. So they both agree they don’t want to be in a forced arranged marriage but eventually the desire between them grows. I thought their spicy scenes were intense but fun and playful also.

~ The whole story takes place at Silas’ estate. Cordelia is basically a prisoner there so we don’t get to see too much of anything surrounding this place except for maybe the woods. Would have loved maybe a little more world-building.

~ Would have liked to see more witchcraft also. Cordelia already knows how to do spells and uses her powers in a fight but it would have been nice to learn about the witches. Maybe in book two since the events at the end of the book hint that the witches are now their enemies?

Final Thoughts:

I thought this was a solid start to the series. I liked the Victorian era setting and the story is filled with with witches, werewolves, romance, werewolf politics and even betrayal. Would have loved more world-building and witchcraft but overall I enjoyed it!

+ Mira is off to college but very reluctantly. She’s trying to move forward in life while missing her mom who left her and her dad years ago. But she gets accepted to a nearby college, under suspicious circumstances, and realizes college might not be so bad. She makes a few friends and have met a few guys. They live in a town with a very known legend about werewolves coming there long ago to defeat vampires – but it’s just a story…right?

+ I love that this was set in college. I liked seeing her making friends, and learning to really make the most of her time there.

+ There is a love triangle – and yes this book has Twilight vibes, but this time it’s the werewolves who are the focus. Mira reunites with an old acquaintance, Seven. He’s on the football team, popular, good looking and seems like a nice guy. But there is another guy, Julian, who is broody, glares at her, threatens her to leave campus, she hates him but he’s gorgeous too and of course Mira feels a strong connection to him. It’s a slow burn, fated mates romance.

+ The ending has a few twists and it kept me invested in the story for sure! There is betrayal, and I wonder what will happen in book two.

~ Mira is clueless about werewolves and vampires, even though the legend is well known in their town. And it doesn’t help that Julian can’t just tell her things so that kind of got frustrating because she’s very mad at him, which he loves I think, but it got kind of tiring after awhile that she has to keep begging for answers and it made me wonder why she couldn’t figure some things out. She was in major denial about some things.

~ This has Twilight all over it and for me I mostly noticed it in the angst between Mira and Julian, which was kind of fun to reminisce to but also made me giggle because it’s so dramatic. Some other similarities, is the small town, her dad being a sheriff, her name being Mirabella (“bella”), her not knowing why Julian is drawn to her but pushes away, little things like that. I found it nostalgic though.

Final Thoughts:

I thought this was a fun vampire/werewolves story! It brought me back to the Twilight and Vampire Diaries days but with a different twist at the end. The romance and angst is there between Mira and Julian. I also loved that Mira had a college life, making friends, and going to school events. Some things were too similar to Twilight though and I did wish Mira could put some things together instead of feeling lost about everything but this is a young adult book so she is acting appropriately. I think the narrator did a great job bringing this story to life and I look forward to reading book two!

I’m so glad I got to finally read this book which has been getting so much hype and I can see why!

I love a good vampire story and this one where a vampire and a Were marry one another to keep the alliances is such a good storyline. I thought the world building and politics were done well and I could feel the high stakes of an alliance between vampire and Weres to be vital to both species against the humans. I felt like I learned a lot about vampires through Misery (what a name!) and there was so much insight about weres when Misery goes to live with them. I like that the explanations in this book didn’t feel like info-dumping but something I was genuinely interested to know.

Misery is a great character – she’s cold and comes off unfeeling because she’s a vampire, they lack the emotions to supposedly care for another being. But then there is Serena, a human, who was Misery’s foster sister and their relationship even though for 3/4ths of the books it was through memories, was such an important relationship for Misery. It’s why she jumps into a marriage alliance – it’s all to find Serena, who is missing and Misery cannot fathom a life without her. I love them together.

As for Misery and her romance with Lowe, it’s a slow burn. But yes, Weres have “mates”, so I think it’s safe to say that was a predictable part of the story. Still, I thought their relationship grew nicely for two people in a forced marriage and when the attraction finally hit for Misery it turned this book quite spicy. And yes, the word I learned this year is “knot” after reading another Were romance earlier this year and not knowing what the heck that was. Well…this book gives a LOT of explanation and demonstration! I don’t know what I think of it yet…like I don’t know if I find it sexy? But hey it’s the way they do things, so I’m just going with it.

The story had a great flow from beginning to end with the search for Serena, the politics of the alliances and how Serena might be involved, Misery living with the Weres and also Misery dealing with not fitting in anywhere ever since she was a child most in part because of her horrible father. I loved the relationship building between Misery, Lowe and the Weres because the hate and fears between them was so strong at first.

The only thing I didn’t quite love was Lowe always taking things on himself and pushing Misery away – after what she’s been through as a child – I hated that for her. That was so weak of him and it annoyed me.

It looks like this is going to be a series or standalone stories in a series – after what happens at the end, so I’m looking forward to the next book!

My Final Thoughts:

This had everything I want in a paranormal romance! Vampires, politics, a slow burn, smart characters, lovable characters, and an entertaining story from start to finish. I’m looking forward to the next book!

In hindsight, the massive guy with honey irises was my first major clue. Unusual eyes for a human, right?
Perfect eyes for a werewolf.

But sexy supernaturals, thongs, and mounting financial strain aside, Mum’s past is buried somewhere in this valley, and I need to dig up the truth or find a way to live with her lies.

What do you do when neither option will leave you unscathed?

  • World Building ~ if you read Kelly St. Clare’s previous series Vampire Towers, just know this one is similar except with werewolves and Laser Tag. I read these series because it’s so unique to base the plot around a game. It’s creative and holds my interest. The story takes place in Deception Valley but this quaint town isn’t all that it seems. The “laser tag” game between humans and werewolves are action packed.
  • Characters ~ Andie is struggling with her mom’s death and debt, trying to finish college and just found out she has family in Deception Valley. She isn’t quite a badass yet, as she’s learning the ropes about laser tag and the war between the two sides. Alaric/Sascha is a Sigma – he gets what he wants and yes he wants Andie. Their connection is electric but Andie fights it as long as she can, but you can’t do much when you are fated. I liked the supporting cast also in the werewolf clan and the human one.
  • Romance ~ Andie and Sascha are inevitable, fated mates but sort of like Vampire Towers where they had levels to achieve mate status, it happens in Shifter Wars also. But the built-up tension between them is definitely there.
  • Writing ~ I enjoy this author’s writing because of the humor and the stories are fast paced. I read this in one night and am ready to read book two when it publishes. It’s total escapism.
  • Triggers: stalking, toxic relationship, grief
  • It’s got a cliffhanger ending – but book two comes out in December, yay!

Solid start to a new series and I just enjoy how the author keeps things creative with throwing a game into the story. It’s creative, unique and keeps things fresh! I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
