This is the sequel to A Fire in the Sky which I rated 3 stars. And I was very curious after the cliffhanger in book one to see what would happen in book two and things got interesting.

One year has passed and Tamsyn is dealing with the lost of Fell. Vetr, Fell’s twin brother, has taken her into their dragon pride and is teaching her how to fight but she is lost in grief. She feels the bond with Fell still and cannot let go. She finds out that Stig (once her good friend but has turned evil) is now married to her younger sister and is Lord of the Borderlands, now that Fell is gone.

Vetr is not trustworthy and even when his desire for Tamsyn is made known, he kind of gave me the ick especially during an event where he made her go into alone to test her. I did not like him and really balked at how maybe she started to feel something for him. But I did like that we get to learn how Vetr runs things in his pride and how things worked among his dragons.

Tamsyn does grow a lot in this book but I was getting frustrated with her for the first half of this book. She’s stuck between thinking she can be both human and dragon but to be human she has to hide her dragon side. To be a dragon she has to forget her human family.

Once more the last 25% of this book was full of action, some twists and turns and then there was an abrupt ending. There is also the addition of a new character. There is an epilogue but I felt unsatisfied.

Final Thoughts:

I read this in one sitting because it’s a fairly easy romantasy to read that isn’t bogged down with detailed world-building. Also there are a few twists and turns that kept me invested. The animosity between humans and dragons is strong, but now the author has thrown in a third enemy – witches. The ending is too abrupt and leaves me wanting to know more and I feel like the epilogue is hinting that there will be a book three. I liked that Tamsyn has lots of growth and I did like the romance storyline (not with Vetr though) and will probably be reading the next book.

~ I thought book one, Fear the Flames, was an okay read and I thought book two would be better but I had some issues with it.

+ I did like Cayden’s POV because there is a lot wrong with him and Elowen and before their wedding, he is trying to gain her trust and make things right again. That man is in love with her badly, but she has trust issues throughout most of this book. They eventually work through things. There is lots of flirting and desire between them but he was not going to take it to the next level unless their relationship was fixed which was sweet. There is lots of spice when they finally do take it there though.

+ The found family is a big trope in this series. Also there is finally more dragons. I wished for more dragons in book ones and was disappointed and now there is more dragons so that was nice.

+ Last 20% of this book is when the action picks up and the story moves quickly. And it ends with a cliffhanger kind of ending.

~ I could not get into this story no matter how many times I put it down and picked it up. The beginning bored me and it was mostly about Cayden and Elowen’s relationship. When it wasn’t that it was some politics and war I was not invested in. It was just too slow for me. I actually skimmed from 50% into the book until the end when all the action was taking place.

~ This book is under 600 pages, which is long.

Final Thoughts:

If you loved Fear of Flames, then you will love this sequel – especially the ending. For me, I didn’t love book one and so it only went a little more down for me in this sequel because I wasn’t invested and it was long and slow, until the last part of the book. This series isn’t for me so I don’t think I’ll be continuing the series.

+ I am always intrigued by the books this author writes. My favorite part of this book is the setting and the atmosphere. It has gothic vibes, a house by the sea, rituals and worshipping Gods. And there is this theme of 3’s which I found interesting also. This story is written like a fever dream.

+ The romance is messy but filled with yearning and very mild heat, nothing graphic. Lark is friends with her neighbors, two siblings, Alistair and Camille. They are friends for a time until they grow apart. But they eventually reunite, Alistair and Lark having more issues to work through but she gets into a relationship with both of them. I thought it would get complicated but it is definitely the type of relationship where everyone in the party was okay with it so I respected that.

+ I really liked the storyline about the God Therion and Lark having to marry him to help her family’s salt mines become profitable again. It remind me of the story of Hades and Persephone but with a different twist that included Alistair.

~ I felt like Lark fell for people too fast, like for Damson at boarding school. She was needy but also needed by everyone it seems: Alistair, Camille, and Therion. I felt her connection to Alistair, but Camille? Not really except for the physical connection they had with each other.

Final Thoughts:

Overall, this one was okay- it’s a quick read and written like a fever dream. I love the coastal, gothic atmosphere and how they worship their God, Therion. I loved all the LGBT romance representation in the story and that it was very accepted in this world but I didn’t love the polyamory between Lark and the siblings only because I felt she had more of a connection and history to Alistair, but I guess at least it didn’t ruin the friendship. And because it’s written like a fever dream at some points I was wondering what was going on. Though some things didn’t work for me, I think young adult gothic romance readers will enjoy this dark, gothic romance story.

I read book two since it was on kindle limited and I was like why not – I just finished book one, let’s push on.

+ Still love Medra’s friendships with Florence, Theo and Visha. Also her growing bond with the dragon, Nyxaris, who has a right to mistrust vampires and everyone else.

+ There is more dragons in this story than learning about vampire lore. Now the story has focused on figuring out what happened to dragons in the past since of course Nyxaris conveniently doesn’t remember much. It’s a mystery that Medra promised Nyyxaris she would learn about and provide the dragon with that missing information.

+ Loved that Kage was featured more in this book – I honestly wish he was the love interest.

~ I do not like Blake. I just couldn’t stand his downward spiral in this book. This is where the bully romance really shows (more than in book one). He is going through a change (something of course I figured out right away once it was hinted in the book) – but he is losing control because of his need for Medra. He is possessive, jealous, angry, but she’s trying her best to push him away (uncessfully), but he is such an ass to her. Maybe growth will come for him in book three but I don’t know if I’ll read it, I can’t stand to hear him say everything is his fault and then he messes up again. Come on Blake! Medra needs to grow also – why is she always getting betrayed by the end of the story? Like no one is steps ahead in this story except Viktor, Blake’s uncle and he’s the villain!

~ The romance is now not so enemies to lovers. She “hates” him but loves to have sex with him. So they are in the enemies with benefits stage, I guess? I don’t know because this is the first time I have actually skipped all the smut in a book because I just couldn’t stand the characters being with one another! 😅. I got tired of the back and forth.

~ Medra finally mentions a tiny bit about her past. Crumbs. Why haven’t we learned more about her fae upbringing yet? Why the long wait? Why is her mother’s spirit in a knife? She brings her along randomly and they can talk in Medra’s head when she has the knife, but it’s so strange. Just gives us more information about Medra!

~ Blake’s sister is still feral. Then Mr. Rodriguez who was supposedly a nice teacher thinks to create a secret society dragon hunter on his own – like what? More things happen but actually they all happen at the end and then there’s a cliffhanger. And why are all the good people getting hurt and dying?

~ The writing isn’t my favorite. It’s simple to read but some things just doesn’t flow well and there is just too much going on.

Final Thoughts:

I was happy this book was shorter than the first, but at least in book one Blake only had hints of being horrible and there was more academia, trials, drama and politics to keep the story moving. This one focused more on the bully romance and I hate a bully so I do not like Blake in this book at all, so much so that I dislike the romance between him and Medra a lot. I did like Medra’s friendships but I hope there is LOTS of growth for Blake and Medra in book three but I kind out doubt there will be. If I read book three it won’t be for the romance, but for the dragons, Kage Tanaka and maybe to learn something more about Medra’s past.

Okay, I finally pushed through and read this book which is a sensation on booktok! And I have a few thoughts. Let’s start with the good.

+ I always love a dark academia type of book. I don’t know why, but I always have and I did enjoy it in this story as well. In Bloodwing Academy, there are four main vampire houses that rule. The blightblood who are not vampires but allowed into the school will be funneled into a certain house by the end of the year. The students learn different things like combat, healing, history, and more.

+ Medra Pendragon, is fae/human, but forced to be bound to a vampire prince, Blake Drakharrow, because of her dragon rider mark. For the most part I thought she is an interesting character who has lots of fight in her, and secrets. Because she dropped out of nowhere, she knew nothing about vampires and their world so she questioned a lot of the authority figures. It will be interesting to see what happens in book two.

+ I did find the world-building fascinating because I also do love a good vampire story. There was a lot to learn about the vampires, dragon riders and then there is Medra who is fae and just dropped out of her world into this vampire one.

+ I enjoyed the found family Medra created with her new friends at Bloodwing Academy especially since some of the highblood vampires, Blake’s friends, were trying to make her life hell.

~ This was almost a DNF in chapter one because I was lost and confused. And I put it aside for weeks but kept seeing tiktoks about it and I really wanted to know what the fuss was about so I finally PUSHED through the beginning and once Medra is at the academy things start to make sense. So I didn’t like how this book started.

~ I don’t love the romance. They are forced to be bound because of Blake’s uncle, and because this book was mostly world-building and learning about vampires since Medra is clueless about this world, I felt like they didn’t have much interaction. When they did interact I didn’t feel any chemistry and yet he’s obsessed with her. There is one real spicy scene between them, I think two fantasies, but just one real one and even then I felt it came on suddenly. And then he goes and messes it all up – really Blake? (And why is this hot, scary vampire named Blake?!) I’m reading book two just to see if he can redeem himself. Honestly, I wanted her to end up with Kage Tanaka!

~ I think there was too much going on in this story. There is Medra’s secret fae identity, she’s a dragon rider – how? Why? And then her mother that died at birth is in her thoughts, she is talking to her spirit, but that kind of goes away in the middle of the story? And Blake’s sister is going feral. Then Medra has to do all these trials, plus all the schooling she taking on. It just didn’t flow well for me. It felt all over the place.

Final Thoughts:

This would have been a DNF if I didn’t power through and in conclusion it’s one of those books that is entertaining if you like all the tropes like dark academia, enemies to lovers, found family and more. I didn’t love the writing style and it might be just me but I had trouble with the formatting of the text not having indentations (it was driving me crazy which made me want to DNF at first). I didn’t love the romance either – will there be someone else for Medra? Probably not, so let’s see if things change in book two and I am reading book two because of the dragon aspect of the story which only really emerged at the end of this book. I think it has a lot of potential but just didn’t love the execution of it.

+ This gives Game of Thrones and House of Dragon vibes but no incest (thank goodness)! I think it mostly resembles House of Dragon with the political intrigue and world-building which has a territory that used to worship Goddesses and practice magic and is now overrun with men practicing the True Religion, they are called the Chosen or Covenantors. Also there is a mad king – sound familiar? Anyway, I actually enjoyed the GoT/HoD vibes a lot – this world is merciless and cutthroat.

+ Aemyra is not only the rightful Queen in hiding but she is going to fight for her throne. Thing is she’s also naive, impulsive and arrogant. She has a lot to learn about being Queen. I think people reading this might either love or hate her. Growing up being groomed as the future Queen left her making impulsive decisions, thinking everything would fall her way easily. She finds out quickly that the path to winning the throne is not easy at she thought it would be. I like her strength and the things that she had to go through with the Chosen, made me root for her a lot. She is basically fighting for women’s rights.

+ I love the dragons and Aemyra’s bond with her twin brother, Adarian who is the more level-headed and softer side of the two of them. Her dad is a morally grey character who I don’t fully trust but it will be interesting to see what happens her relationship with him in the next book.

+ The romance is a slow build and I went back and forth hating and loving Fiorean to hating him by the end! But that’s what makes me want to read book two – because these two took enemies to lovers to the next level. Their sword fighting and fire fighting battles are intense, and the ending was even more so. There is some spice with knife play but since it’s a slow burn it doesn’t happen until later in the book.

+ There was good action throughout the book, culminating with a fierce battle at the end.

~ One issue I had was reading the Gaelic words. Yes, there is a vocabulary list to help readers, thank goodness but I did get frustrated at times.

~ This is an enemies to lovers to enemies romance for now. Prince Fiorean doesn’t show much emotion but when he does confess to how he feels about Aemyra – it’s so good. But still, I felt like leading up to their spicy scene, there wasn’t much build-up, just a lot of hate between them, would have liked more hints of attraction. So if you expect them to be wooing one another, that doesn’t happen, this is a vicious court they are living in and I’d say the lust wins out first. We’ll see what happens when the emotions come in.

Final Thoughts:

I didn’t know what to expect with this book but I can say that by the end of it I was addicted and will be looking forward to book two. What I love most about it is how it gives House of Dragon vibes with the dragons, political intrigue and ruthlessness of the world. I think I’ve been craving a book just like this for awhile. I was thoroughly entertained by this book and the betrayal at the end left me needing book two asap.

I almost forgot that this book came out this week! Once I remembered (the day after it was released), I bought the ebook because this is a book I’ve been waiting to read since I read book one, Heartless Hunter, last year.

+ The romance is the main thing I was here for – the enemies to lovers between Rune and Gideon is taken to the next level in this book after all the events that happened in book one. I wanted to see how they would come together, how they would push their prejudices and grievances aside to be with one another and it didn’t disappoint. The cat and mouse game between them, the jealousy, the lack of trust, it’s all there but this time their love is going to win over all the political games taking place.

+ Rune is finding out how horrible Cressida is and when Cressida takes things a step further, Rune makes her decision. I always felt Rune was stuck in the worst predicament especially because she’s not cutthroat like Cressida – she’s a bleeding heart. She wants to help her people, the witches who are oppressed, but she also can realize how the world would look if Cressida became ruler over everything. I liked seeing her trying to face the situation she was facing: of stay and be tortured with a life she didn’t want, or flee so far away from the problems that it won’t touch her (except when she thinks about the witches she left behind). And then there is Gideon, how does she leave him?

+ Gideon is in his own predicament. His task is to kill Rune, but how can he when he is in love with her? He makes quite and effort though. One thing I love about him and Rune is they do try to kill one another haha…but they just can’t seem to pull the trigger. I loved their fighting, arguing, and interactions! I love them.

+ The story is filled with political drama with Cressida trying to wage war and Gideon and his side trying to stop her. It’s fast paced, and has an unexpected twist at the end.

~ I will say because this book was fast-paced (I read it in one sitting), as I was nearing the end I was scared it was going to be a rushed ending. And it is rushed…but I’m just glad there was a happy ending.

Final Thoughts:

This conclusion is fast-paced, and with kind of a rushed ending. I do wish it was a trilogy only because I love Rune and Gideon so much! Rune and Gideon will be added to my list of favorite enemies to lovers romance couples. I love their push and pull, cat and mouse game, angsty romance and seeing them happy at the end was everything. This is a great conclusion to the duology that is The Crimson Moth series.

Well…this was a disappointment. And I was excited for this book even though I felt like Iron Flame was not as good as Fourth Wing, I had hope it would get better in Onyx Storm but for me it got worse.

I think my major problem with the book was the pacing, there would be action, then a good deal of no action, and lots of talking. And there was the cast of characters, trying to remember who was who and then meeting new characters and learning new places. I already thought Iron Flame could have been broken up into two books, but now with Onyx Storm….I think there is just too much going on in the story and a trilogy would have been better than a five book series.

I fell in love with Xaden and Violet in Fourth Wing but in Onyx Storm, I wasn’t feeling it – maybe because they have some challenges, I mean, Xaden is fighting himself as he turns venin. So I know they love each other, but there was just something about their interactions in this book that I just didn’t care for, not invested in and wanted to move past their romance. Maybe it felt repetitive? I’m not sure. Honestly, I wanted Xaden to turn venin just to see what would happen to their romance. 😅

And the fact that they had to do more training? And the whole professor/student relationship? I was like, what is happening and do we need this in the story? lol… So I did skip over a bunch in this book. Even now as I write this review I’m trying to remember what stood out to me but it’s like a blank!

So I’ll say my favorite part of the book are the dragons, especially Tairn because he keeps it real and he’s awesome in battle.

Final Thoughts:

This was a total disappointment for me but I was already wary about the series being five books long. There is always usually middle book syndrome, and I think this is what happened with this one so will book four be more tightened up and the pacing be better? I hope so but I think I will go into the next book cautiously. This one didn’t work for me, but I know reviews of this have either been hit or miss, so even though I didn’t like it, you just might!

I haven’t read a Sophie Jordan novel in years but I got asked to read this one so I was curious. I think I read one YA novel from her and a few historical romance books but like I said it’s been awhile.

Tamsyn is a whipping a girl. Yes, she is the girl who gets the punishment meant for the royal princesses. It’s an awful situation for her but because she’s an orphan, it is actually a better station than Tamsyn could have ever dreamed of, at least that’s what she thinks or is trained to believe. She’s a part of the royal family but also, not.

Fell, is a hardened, ruthless warlord who believes his hard work defending the borders deserves a price and what he wants is to marry one of the princesses. I think you can guess what happens in this story at least for the first part. The first half of the book is predictable but the second half had some interesting surprises!

I was definitely entertained by the steamy attraction (very instant attraction) between Tamsyn and Fell. There are a few spicy scenes between them. Unfortunately, I think that’s the only thing they had going for them as a couple – the physical chemistry, because I didn’t think there was enough time for their relationship to grow at all in this story. And although I read this book in one night, I didn’t feel connected to any of the characters. There is also someone in Tamsyn’s life from the royal court, Stig, who was a close friend and is in love with her. But, I wasn’t feeling Stig’s point of view in the story since she never really considers him or has any romantic feelings towards him. I would have rather had like more chapters devoted to Tamsyn and Fell getting to know one another.

I definitely liked the dragons but again, it comes mostly at the end of a story and sets things up for a sequel.

My Thoughts:

This story had me hooked even though I wasn’t connecting much to the characters. I was into the drama of the arranged marriage and wanted to see how that was going to turn out. The first half was predictable but I think the second half got me intrigued because that’s when the dragons are actually introduced. I think I may continue the series just because the ending was quite a cliffhanger and I want to learn more about the dragon shifters.

I thought this started off strong but I think it fizzled out for me in some parts. Here are my thoughts:

Likes:

It’s a romantasy. I love romance with my fantasy. It’s an enemies to lovers situation. Cayden is a Commander with a ruthless reputation and Elowen is a Queen of her own kingdom but she is hunted by her father. Cayden makes a deal with Elowen to help protect and get her dragons while she helps him by standing with Vareveth in the coming war.
The banter between Cayden and Elowen was entertaining. I liked their banter and of course they are attracted to one another. There are a few steamy parts.
Elowen is bonded to some dragons but have been separated them since she was a child. I was excited that this story had dragons.
Elowen’s relationship with her best friend was cute.

Dislikes:

Not enough dragons! It’s mostly at the end of this book.
I felt like I wasn’t invested enough in Elowen’s turmoil about her past, her present with leading her secret kingdom and then her bond with her dragons. I think because she’s such a strong character, it felt like everything was handled and she didn’t really need help. I just didn’t connect to her.
The story didn’t flow well for me.

I think this one was okay. I loved that this story had dragons but it’s really only a little glimpse of them. I did enjoy the romance aspects of the story but I do wish I connected more to the characters. Overall, if you like dragons and romantasy definitely give this one a try.
