Top Ten Tuesday: Childhood Favorites

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl – definitely check out her awesome website to see more info. This week’s topic is…Childhood Favorites! Not gonna lie – this one is challenging for me.

I did not grow up in a reading household. My parents immigrated from the Philippines to the USA. Growing up as farmers, they didn’t have the luxury of leisure reading in their motherland. They worked hard as children and as adults had to work hard in Hawaii to give me and my sister a better life. So my joy of reading came first from my elementary school librarian. I loved her! She was this petite Japanese-American woman, named Mrs. Aoki, with a high pitched, sweet, soft voice. Story time at the library was always my favorite part of the day!

Madeline – I loved when our school librarian read Madeline books to us in the afternoons before school ended. I wanted to be Madeline in Paris with her uniform and chic hat.

The Twelve Dancing Princesses – I’m not even sure what version our school librarian read to us – all I remember is the story. I love how these sisters snuck out at night (element of danger) and danced the night away. I would wonder where they went and my imagination would take flight. I thought it was amazing to be able to dance all night that their shoes would get ruin. 😂

Cinderella – once again, this isn’t the exact book I read as a child, but I did read the Disney version of Cinderella and fell in love. I loved the animals more than anything. Her gown was pretty and it was nice she got a Prince in the end, but I loved the magical aspect of the book.

Tikki Tikki Tembo – I still remember my first grade teacher reading us this story. It was after a field trip and it was hot as heck, but there were like 15 minutes to the bell ringing to end the school day. She read this book, as we tried to cool off, sitting outside of the classroom praying for a breeze and I got lost in this story. I’ve now read it to my own son and we love saying Tikki Tikki Tembo’s name. 😂

Green Eggs and Ham – This book was my favorite by Dr. Seuss when I was a child because green eggs and ham do not sound appealing. But it’s so funny how Sam-I-Am insists it’s amazing throughout the whole book. I still enjoy this book and my kids love it too now.

Grimm’s Fairy Tales – because I was going to say Rumplestiltskin is a favorite of mine BUT…since I love a lot of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales, why not list them as one? Rapunzel, even Cinderella was writing by them, and so many other fairy tales that are now re-imagined today in YA books.

Since I mentioned Brothers Grimm, then I have to add Hans Christian Andersen in here as well! My favorites from him are The Little Mermaid, The Little Match Girl and Thumbelina to name a few.

East O’ the Sun and West O’ the Moon – I remember we saw a play of this story for a field trip in the 5th or 6th grade and I was entranced by the story. Just the title itself sounded magical! Definitely a love of mine and I’m thinking I needed to buy myself a copy and re-read it.

Sweet Ferdinand! The Story of Ferdinand is short and sweet with a lovely message about a bull who wanted no part in the violent world of bull-fighting. How can you not love a bull who loves flowers? He is the sweetest! It’s a story that always made me feel happy at the end.

Last, but not least, the very awesome, The Giving Tree. It’s a beautiful, sweet simple story with a message that relates to children and adults alike. I could read this one over and over again.

There you have it! Ten amazing collections and stories that shaped my love of reading as a child. Today, some of these books are shaping my own children’s love of books and reading.

Did you enjoy any of these as a child as well? Let me know in the comments below. Happy Reading!

Children’s Book Review: Stinky Science

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Author: Edward Kay

Illustrator: Mike Shiell

Format: E-book

Pages: 44

Grade Level: 3-7

Age Range: 8-12 years old

Categories: Science

Disclaimer: **I received this book free from Edelweiss+ in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**

Book Blurb:

This book about the science of smells takes a funky subject and makes it fascinating — and hilarious! It starts with the basics, from the reason why things stink to how our sense of smell works (hint: it has to do with the six million scent receptors way up inside our noses). Then come some specifics such as how and why smells are closely linked to memories, descriptions of some of the stinkiest stinks on Earth and information about the chemicals that smells are made of. (Young readers finally learn why feet and some cheeses can smell the same!) Altogether, the book offers a complete tour of everything olfactory, while also being a compendium of the best-of in the gross-out category. Poop, rotting flesh, b.o.: what more could a nose-y kid ask for?

Edward Kay is an award-winning children’s television writer and science writer. Here he uses his knack for knowing what kids like to create an entertaining, laugh-out-loud book that’s thoroughly researched and full of up-to-date facts. It offers strong curriculum links in the life sciences, particularly the human body structure and systems, and molecules and organisms. Adding to the fun are the funny comic-style illustrations by Mike Shiell on every page. (Yes, of course, there’s farting!) Kids may not even notice they’re learning science! A glossary and index round out this terrific book.

MY REVIEW

Thank you to Kids Can Press and Edelweiss+ for giving me a free e-arc of this book to read.

My 6 year old son is a very curious boy who seems to be asking me questions non-stop about space, sea creatures that live in the deep, bacteria, you name it! Obviously, I am no expert in these subjects. I saw the title of this book and knew it would answer some of his questions. I also thought I could learn a few things. Another reason I requested this book is that my son needs to read and log 25 non-fiction books per school quarter. He reads a lot of fun fiction books but it’s harder for us to find fun non-fiction books.

When I was done reading it to him, he asked if the author wrote more books and that I should buy them if he did. The book was funny yet informative and the illustrations were hilarious. We learned about body odor, foot odor, cheese that smelled like foot odor, smells that come from animals. We even learned about poop smell – the grosser the funnier for my son. 🤷🏻‍♀️ He is younger than the recommended age level for this book but he understood most of it and if he didn’t it was easy for me to break it down for him. This was a fun, informative and enjoyable learning experience for both my son and I.

Children’s Books – Mini Reviews:

Here are three books I got for my 6 year old son at the Hawaii Book and Music. We enjoyed all of them. 😄

My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Title: The Boy From The Dragon Palace

Author: Margaret Read MacDonald

Illustrator: Sachiko Yoshikawa

Format: Paperback

Pages: 32

Categories: Japanese Folklore, Wishes

Book Blurb:

One day, a poor flower seller drops his leftover flowers into the sea as a gift for the Dragon King. What does he get in return? A little snot-nosed boy—with the power to grant wishes! Soon the flower seller is rich, but what will happen if he forgets the meaning of “thank you?”

MY REVIEW

I picked up the paperback, autographed copy of this book at a recent book festival. I love the cover and thought it would be perfect for my 6 year old son. We read it together and we laughed a lot. It’s a retelling of a Japanese folktale about a boy who would blow his nose and basically grant wishes. A snotty nosed genie! 😂 The illustrations are very beautiful and the lessons taught in the story are about greed and being ungrateful. My son and I loved this book!

Title: Bye, Bye, Big!

Author: Margaret Read MacDonald & Gerald Fierst

Illustrator: Kitty Harvill

Format: Hardcover

Pages: 36

Categories: Animals, Circle of Life

Book Blurb:

BIG BIG Frog snaps up little little mosquito. But BIG BIG snake snaps up little little frog. And so the chain continues…until BIG BIG man is zapped by little little mosquito. BIG print and easy to read text, fun to read aloud or to pour over on your own. Kitty Harvill’s bright papercuts leap off the page.

MY REVIEW

I got the autographed copy of this hard cover version at a book festival and what caught me eye was the colorful cover. Also, I wanted a book my son would have fun reading by himself. This is simply worded and repetitive enough that he wouldn’t find it too challenging to read. He also loves animals, so this was perfect for him. I read it to my 2 year old daughter and she actually told me to stop it. I think because the animals were getting eaten by the bigger one, similar to There Was An Old Woman Who Swallowed A Fly. She was scared for the animals, I think. But when I read it to my son again, she listened and actually laughed this time. The illustrations are nice and big!

Title: Look Inside Space

Author: Rob Lloyd Jones

Format: Hard Cover

Pages: 14

Categories: Space

Book Blurb:

This is a great fun flap book packed with interesting information about space, and the amazing things that float through it – stars, moons, comets, and the planets of our solar system. Each double-page spread has a stunning colour illustration, and several flaps to lift to find out more about what’s going on in the scene – such as what goes inside the International Space Station, how astronauts visited the Moon and what they did there, as well as the history of astronomy, from Galileo to the Hubble Space Telescope.

MY REVIEW

Another book festival find at the Usborne books tent – my son is into all things space, so I had to get this book for him. It was flaps in the book which makes it a but more interactive. We went through this book together and I learned some things as well! We loved the illustrations and facts about planets, black holes and more. It’s a great book for kids who are interested about space!

It’s Monday Again: Weekend Recap – Book Festival, Game of Thrones

Aloha everyone! How was your weekend? I hope everyone had a good weekend. My family and I had planned to go to the annual Filipino Festival on Saturday. The weather app said it would rain, but we hoped it would stopped for a bit and didn’t get our wish. We got TOTALLY drenched. Of all days to rain in Hawaii. It was on Saturday. 😂

My kids were good sports about it, even though they were soaked through. My son and I ran from tent to tent, bought some pancit noodles and some other foods to help support the vendors somehow. Then we ran back to my hubby and daughter who were waiting under another tent. We had to dash to the car, which got us even more wet. We stopped by my mom’s house which thankfully was nearby to dry off. The kids got to play with their cousins so they had fun regardless.

On Sunday the sun came out – hooray! My son had his last day of Sunday school so he went with his dad and I took my little girl out to the Hawaii Book & Music Festival. It was my first time going and we had a really nice time.

They had hula dancers, music, local publishing houses, bounce houses, gelato 😋 and books! As we were looking at books under the Barnes and Nobles tent a worker told me Olympic figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi would be there to sign her books – I didn’t even know she had books! It’s a coincidence my daughter had decided to wear her sparkly shoes then – because she calls them her “ice skate shoes”. Kristi Yamaguchi was very sweet and gracious. I also love her book which I’ll write a review on sometime this month.

We had such a fun day and most importantly I got a bunch of books for my kids. I’ll do reviews on them so check back in the Children’s Books page for that.

Lastly, who’s been watching Game of Thrones? I’ve been a fan from Season 1. I remember my hubby and I watching Season 1 and at the end of that season he was SO mad. He knew it wasn’t a show for him if they killed off Ned Stark right away. As for me…I wanted to know who else would die. Haha…so wow, I can’t believe there are only 2 more episodes left. 😳 I’ve never read the books, I’ve been meaning too – but people say the show is now different from them, so I didn’t want to compare since I love the show. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Should I still read them? 🤔

Anyway I have my pick for who will win the throne. It’s so fun discussing it with friends and family who are fans and debate who should win. Which House are you? I’d say I’m House Stark. 😬

Hope you all had a good weekend and read some good books this week! Happy reading! 😘
