+ The narrators did a fabulous job and kept me invested in this romance story!

+ This is book four in the When in Rome series, and I’ve read all the books except the first one, surprisingly. But once more we are back in Rome, Kentucky, a small town with good vibes. Madison left Rome to make her culinary dreams come true in NYC but it wasn’t what she thought it would be so she’s back home again, trying to figure out what’s next for her. James is Madison’s brother’s best-friend, and on a whim he tells Madison he has a restaurant he needs a chef for and thought of her for the position. Thing is James’ farm is on the verge of closing, and he needs this restaurant to work to keep it afloat.

+ This is a small town, brother’s best-friend, friends to lovers romance which I thought was really cute from beginning to end. Clearly James is crazy about her but doesn’t know where he stands with her – despite that he does everything to try and make her happy. Madison, is the youngest Walker sister and kind of the wild, flighty one. She’s a free spirit. She’s also had a crush on James for awhile now but has kept him in the friend zone so they can concentrate on being business partners with this new restaurant. It’s a very slow burn, and there is spice, but not a lot of it, just at the end of the book.

+ There is a lot of soul searching happening in this story. Madison is the free spirit who needs to put down roots somewhere. She feels like the family failure. James has taken over the farm from his parents and he feels like he’s letting them down because the farm isn’t doing well. Tommy’s brother is trying to help James but he’s also flirty with Madison, so there are some issues Tommy and James have to work out.

~ It’s a cute romance without much drama between Madison and James which is cute, but I wanted a little bit a drama to keep things interesting but that’s a personal preference!

Final Thoughts:

This was a very cute friends to lovers romance and a great edition to the When in Rome series! I enjoyed the audiobook a lot.

+ There are a lot of things I enjoyed about this rom-com. One of them being the strong theme of family. Kendra is back home in Washington, D.C. and staying with her older brother and his wife while she gets her feet back under her. She’s helping at his new restaurant but she has dreams of opening a speakeasy of her own. I love how her cousin is almost like a sister – I totally relate to that! I love that her family is tight-knit and though at times critical, there is always support somewhere in the family. When she is with her cousin, Lani and her sister-in-law, Shonda, they are so funny together – I loved their family friendship.

+ I love the different ethnicities being represented. Kendra is half Black on her mom’s side and Filipino and Thai on her dad’s side which was cool! I loved hearing about filipino food dishes in the book.

+ The romance is a brother’s best-friend kind of romance, and there are a few spicy scenes. There are some challenges between Kendra and BJ/Ben though but it is resolved in the end.

~ Now as much as I love her tight-knit family, there was definitely favoritism. She got criticism which is again totally relatable but I felt bad for Kendra. She was putting in the work and had all her plans laid out. Her brother was supportive but also a little bit overprotective. Kind of wished there a moment with her parents at the end where they work things out.

~ Speaking of overprotective – BJ is her brother’s best friend so yes her brother would have thoughts about that. But the way BJ kind of strung her along, saying no they can’t act on their desire and then acted on it, then pushed her away? I did not like that and started not to like him. Also, he had no personality – he was definitely there for a booty call, but he didn’t open up to Kendra at all.

Final Thoughts:

There were a lot of things I liked about this story – the family themes, the food, the girlfriend group, and Kendra trying to make her dreams come true. I didn’t love the romance, even though the spice was good. I just didn’t like how BJ was going back and forth – keeping her at a distance, then pulling her in, then pushing away again. So I didn’t love the romance but I think everything else, at least for me, made up for it, plus it was a quick read.

But as the wedding day draws closer and everything starts to go wrong, it just might be Brody who sends Maggie’s business crashing down—and her heart along with it.

This one started off strong. Maggie, and her brother’s best friend, Brody, had a moment during her brother’s wedding. But he left her hanging and she put that bad experience out of her mind. They meet again coincidentally in Bora Bora where Brody is trying to get in good with the head of the company he works for. Maggie, is a wedding planner and wants make some connection with Brody’s boss also, so she can further her goals for her company.

There are a lot of fun tropes in this one: fake dating, forced proximity, and mutual pining.

Maggie and Brody bicker so much and it’s really fun and funny at the beginning of the book. Then it just becomes a bit immature. Clearly the physical attraction between them is there and I love that Brody likes things about Maggie like her being driven, social, and just always making people feel comfortable. But I think Maggie only likes Brody for his looks because honestly…there wasn’t else much there about him to be attracted to. He seems like a fun guy, and with her brother Gary, they are ridiculous together. I felt like at times Maggie went overboard with trying to humiliate him too – even if it wasn’t “on purpose”, I was like okay…that seemed uncalled for? When they finally take things to the next level though, it gets steamy. They have good chemistry in bed and when they aren’t fighting.

I did think the book was too long. I was hoping for a quick, romance read and I thought it would be with how fast everything was happening in the beginning but by 60% in I was kind of losing interest. Also there were some typos in the beginning of the book which threw me off a little.

My Final Thoughts:

This one is a fun romp on an island with two characters who are trying so hard not to fall for each other but it’s so hard when they are physically attracted to one another and forced into one room for a few days. There is a lot of sex humor in this one. It’s a spicy romantic comedy that’s easy to read but for me it fizzled out at the end.
