April 25: Do Blog Tours Build Community?

Prompts: Do you participate in blog tours? What do you like or dislike about them? Do you trust reviews that are written for blog tours? When you participate in blog tours, do you connect with other bloggers involved? Do you think blog tours build community?

Do you participate in blog tours? What do you like or dislike about them?

Yes I do blog tours but not as much as before. I might only do 1-3 blog tours now when before I’d try to do a bit more. I like that I get a chance to help promote a book but I hated when I didn’t love a book and didn’t want to leave a bad review. So now I will feature an excerpt of the book for the blog tour and save my own review of it for another post.

Do you trust reviews that are written for blog tours?

I do. I think if someone doesn’t love a book they generally will say so. If I don’t like a blog tour book I just say it isn’t for me but a certain type of reader might love it so give it a chance.

When you participate in blog tours, do you connect with other bloggers involved? Do you think blog tours build community?

I don’t usually connect with other bloggers during a blog tour but I do see when their posts pop up and I check it out just to see how they felt about the book! So in that way I do think it builds community because we see we are on the same blog tour and then read check out each other’s posts.

Do you collect bookish accessories?

I don’t collect bookish accessories now – only when I used to subscribe to book boxes and it came with random themed accessories.

What are some bookish accessories that you can’t get enough of?

Bookmarks, blankets, bags, shirts, stickers…I love it all, I just don’t have the budget to buy these things lol or space to store this stuff.

Is there any type of bookish accessory that you feel is “overdone” (i.e. book mugs)?

I’m not a fan of pins even though they are so cute. I’m just not someone who displays them! Just not a pin person I guess.

Where do you usually get your bookish accessories and do you have recommended stores to get them from?

I only used to get them with the book box subscriptions but Etsy has so much cute bookish stuff.

**********

Do you buy books randomly or do you think about what to buy?

I supposed to be on a book buying ban but when I wasn’t on my ban, I bought books randomly and often! Usually because of a pretty cover or hype. But now that I’m on a budget 😅 I really think about what to buy.

How do you decide which books to buy vs which books to borrow or just save for later?

I will go into Barnes and Noble and want all these books then I look at the price and say HELL NO. Books are expensive – i remember when a paperback was $5.99 😩 – a long, long time ago! So if I buy something on Amazon I will put it in my shopping cart and leave it there, shop around, check Book Outlet, and if the price isn’t right I just won’t buy.

But when I can’t help myself like couple weeks ago – I did just buy 2 books because one I can’t wait for as a library book and another I loved as an arc and love the sprayed edges on the hardcover plus it was under $20! But usually I wait for them as a library book. I am not going to lie, these sprayed edged books are making me fight my book buying ban tooth and nail. I can’t resist a pretty book…so now I give myself permission to buy one book a month.

For books at the top of your TBR, is your go-to buying a book or do you check your library first?

My TBR list order doesn’t matter! I just put titles on there when I see them so I’ll check my library first, check any sales on different websites and then gauge if I REALLY need to read that book right now or not.

What book formats do you own most of—physical books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

I think I now own more ebooks than physical books but I’m trying to get back to physical books because of the whole discussion about ebooks not really being ours to “own”. And maybe when they use to cost less I had no probably throwing my money away like that? But ebook prices are climbing! And it makes it more worth it now to own the physical books (when they go on sale) because sometimes the price difference between an ebook and a physical books is very small. I don’t own any audiobook, I borrow those.

Do you enjoy reading books with high relatability to your past or present situation (i.e. with relatable characters, situations they face, or places they visit) or do you read purely to escape reality?

I used to love more realistic books but in the past few years I gravitate more towards fantasy to escape reality. But I still do like when a book is relatable because it gives me a connection to the characters so it could be in a fantasy setting and still slightly relatable.

There are some times now when I read realistic fiction where it can take me back to a past situation and kind of trigger me. Especially if it pertains to grief but also, I still like those books because I can say yeah…I’ve been in that position or felt those strong feelings and look at me now – I’ve survived a challenging time in my life!

Do you seek out a certain type of read, depending on your head space or mood?

I am definitely a mood reader and because I read a lot of fantasy or romantasy with world-building sometimes if I read too much of that type of book, it’s too much for my brain! I need a switch to something contemporary just as a palate cleanser.

March 28: Underrepresented Types of Female Characters

Prompts: For the final week of March, here is another Women’s History Month topic! What types of female characters do you want to see more of in fiction? Do you notice certain female character archetypes that you think are used to often? Who are some female characters that inspire you?

**********

What types of female characters do you want to see more of in fiction?

I think there could be more women with disabilities. I think Violet in Fourth Wing was interesting because she has a disability to overcome while trying to keep up with stronger students. Same for in A Curse So Dark and Lonely by. Brigid Kemmerer – Harper, had a disability. I don’t have one but my best friend since Kindergarten has lived with rheumatoid arthritis since the second grade and I just admire her strength so when women like her are represented in books – it’s amazing to see!

Do you notice certain female character archetypes that you think are used to often?

I read a lot of fantasy and the female main characters almost always are all the same. A girl with a tough and challenging background, struggling and eventually becoming powerful with some special power.

Who are some female characters that inspire you?

Some of the most amazing female characters I love are written are by Kristin Hannah. They are so real, raw, vulnerable, and imperfect. Yet there is always this inner strength in her characters that make you root for them and hope they come out of their hard situation intact. Her latest, The Women, features Frankie who goes to be a nurse in the Vietnam War, but the other nurses she meets there are as amazing, strong, imperfect, but resilient as well. But yes her characters and stories always inspire me.

Do you agree with the term since it has a somewhat “negative” connotation?

I don’t take it too seriously! I think the word “guilty pleasure” is kind of fun but I was raised Catholic so I know all about “guilt” 😅.

Should you feel ashamed or “guilty” for enjoying a certain genre or non-traditional type of book (i.e. graphic novels, manga)?

I was made to feel ashamed reading romance when I was younger like in my teens but then I stopped caring since I knew what I loved and I remember hearing that romance was the number one selling genre in books (don’t know if that is still true). No one should be ashamed or feel guilty for what they read and the older I get, the less I care about people’s opinions.

What books do you love or are on your TBR do you think would be considered “guilty pleasures” by others?

Romance, dark romance, young adult books (YES, I’m in my 40’s and still love them!)…mostly YA because I’m not the target audience but I can’t help it, it just reminds me of being young!

Writing book reviews is a huge part of running a book blog. Do book reviews make up a big part of your blog content? Do you prefer to write long or short reviews?

I think my blog is half reviews and half book memes like TTT, Top 5 Tuesday, Book tags and Goodreads Monday. And I prefer to write short reviews, at least I think they are short.

How does reviewing advance copies (ARCs) and working directly with authors and publishers change your approach to writing the reviews?

With arcs I’m reviewing, I try to give positive critiques even when I’m not feeling the book. Because even if the book didn’t work for me, it could work for someone else – so I still try to recommend the book.

Do you post on platforms other than your blog (i.e. Goodreads, The Storygraph, social media) and do those reviews differ from what you share on your blog?

I post on Goodreads and I keep the reviews the same. It’s too much work to write a different review lol.

Let’s Talk Bookish: How Many Books Do You Read in a Year? | 2/28/25

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly bookish meme originally created by Rukky @ Eternity Books and hosted by Aria @ Book Nook Bits, where every Friday, bloggers write discussion posts based on a weekly prompt and Dini @ dinipandareads has cohosted since the beginning of 2025.

This week’s topic is:

How Many Books Do You Read in a Year? (Jillian @ Jillian the Bookish Butterfly)

How many books do you typically read in a year? Do you always track your reading? Does keeping track of the books you read motivate you or stress you out? How do you keep track of the books you read? Do you have a 2025 reading goal?

How many books do you typically read in a year?

I’m trying to stay below 150. The past few years I had this blog I was reading up to 170 books and I got burned out. Before the blog I think I made my goal 50 books but would hit at least 75. So I think I’m keeping my goal now at 125. I think I read 135 books last year or something near that number.

Do you always track your reading? How do you keep track of the books you read?

I track it with this blog, I think. I also use Goodreads but I don’t always mark a book *read* right away. So this blog is my most consistent tracker. I am trying out StoryGraph though but just like Goodreads, I’m not on there consistently. I also keep a book journal because I like to print out those little sticker photos!

Does keeping track of the books you read motivate you or stress you out?

I don’t think tracking my reading motivates or stresses me out. It’s just there. I’m already an avid reader, so I know I’m going to reach my goal because I can’t help myself lol.

Do you have a 2025 reading goal?

My goal is 100 this year! Which is less than my goal last year (125).

What are your favourite non-romantic relationships to read about (i.e. siblings, parent-child, etc.) and what do you love most about them?

I do a love a book with a sibling relationship, especially sisters because I have a sister. I also love loving parent-child relationships. I think a lot of the books feature complicated families because it’s realistic, parents aren’t perfect and siblings don’t always like one another. So in a way, I like both where there are supportive family members and also where the complicated family dynamics are shows also. I also LOVE a story with best-friends.

Do you prefer to read about them over romantic relationships?

I still prefer to read about romantic relationships because usually that’s the type of books I gravitate to but I love a story that can have romantic and non-romantic relationships together.

What books would you recommend with your favourite non-romantic relationships?
