World Building: This is a dark fantasy where a whole kingdom is rotting, and I don’t only mean the crops and buildings, but the people too. There is a curse that the current King Kael is trying to starve out, he’s supposed to take a wife he loves and slice her throat to feed his crown blood, but he refuses to do it but it means people will rot and die. There is body horror and…maggots. So if you are totally grossed out about both those things, this might not be for you.

Characters: I love Elara. She is always around death because she is a gravedigger along with her mom and brother. She’s not afraid of it and has seen so much of it that it doesn’t phase which makes her perfect to be King Kael’s bride since he is rotting. King Kael is someone who wants to end the curse, he’s rotting, he’s angry, lashes out but he softens towards Elara’s brash attitude and I was enjoying their growing friendship. Vale is a mystery – he’s handsome, and claims he is a steward for the king. His plan, to get Elara to make the king fall in love with her, so he can sacrifice her and feed the crown – which would remove the rot killing everything in the land.

Romance: For a moment in this book I thought there would be a love triangle. Elara is getting to know Kael, but her body wants Vale. And I was all for her attraction to the dark, mysterious man, even though I thought Kael was the nicer one of the two. There is a lot of mystery around both men, and you can never tell who is good or bad, who to trust. There is spice but nothing too overboard.

Story: I could not put this book down and I didn’t realize it was under 300 pages until I finished it so quick! I love Elara and how strong and brave she is. She loves her family and will do whatever it takes, even give up her life to save them from rotting. She gets under Vale’s skin and she befriends the Kael. There are secrets and lies and everything comes to a head in a cliffhanger. But thank goodness book two is out – because I had to read it right away. There were decisions that Elara made that I was frustrated about, but I understand she was trying to play her own game too and survive the situation she was in.

Vibes: dark vibes, some gross moments, but death is all around

Final Thoughts:

I love this book and only lowered my rating because some of the body horror was gross. But I was horrified and couldn’t look away – and I love Elara. I had to see if they could break the curse! It’s why I had to read book two right away.

Part two in this duet – this is a love story that makes me cry because what do you mean Elara makes Death fall in love with her? He tries his hardest to not succumb to her but he cannot resist. I love them together. There is spice and banter, it’s less dark than book one – less body horror and there is a battle of wills but Elara is a force.

And the ending chapters which is basically an epilogue? Ugh…my heart! For some reason it was reminding me of Jack and Sally in Nightmare Before Christmas 😅 maybe because of all the skeleton parts of Death when he is revealed as himself. But hello his heartstrings? I could not take it. 💔 What a beautiful ending to this story to show us that love is always worth it, even through loss and pain.

I will say this was shorter than book one and I feel like both books could have been combined since most romantasy books these days are long. I was totally engaged in this story and I really loved it.

Final Thoughts:

I love this duology which I feel could have just been one book – but besides that, what a story. It’s dark, but so heartfelt at the end. It pulled at my heartstrings. I’ll be looking forward to reading more from this author!

World Building: Tied into the Chinese mythology of Chang’e (the moon goddess) and Hou Yi – Yue is a demon nine-tailed fox disguised as a beautiful young woman when she is wearing a mask. When demon hunter, Sonam, captures her and they banish her to hell, she drags him down with her, with a few of her guards. So most of this story is set in hell, with different tests they have to past to try and get out! I thought it was a fun venture through hell meeting these different Star Gods in hell and seeing Yue, Sonam and crew fight their way out.

Characters: I love Yue! Yes she’s a demon but she has heart, and it’s been broken. She has rules, she doesn’t eat children, and she’s such a fighter. Sonam is a captain of the guard and an infamous demon hunter. These two clash and fight but when they start seeing each other on a deeper level it’s fantastic. I loved the secondary characters too, Sonam’s friend and cousin who is dragged down to hell with them. The maskmaker is a very intriguing character also!

Romance: enemies to lovers with no spice! I was amazed but it totally worked because I was invested in seeing Yue and Sonam fight, and then fall for one another. I loved their banter too. And it isn’t instant because of what she is to him, a demon that he hunts, and what he is to her, a hunter who hunts her kind. But I was so happy when they fall. I love them. I just wish there was a little more than just a kiss, but that’s my personal preference, it really is perfect as is.

Story: The narrators did such an amazing job with this story! I felt like this was non-stop action and I loved it. It made the story move fast which I appreciated.

Vibes/Tropes: enemies to lovers, demon/demon-hunter, deadly trials

Final Thoughts:

I thoroughly enjoyed this story action packed story about a demon and a demon hunter. I was rooting for them to find their way through hell and fall in love in the process and I was not disappointed! I would have maybe loved a little more steam in the romance but that’s just a personal preference, it was still perfect. Definitely will check out more books from this author!

+ I’ve read a few books from Julie Murphy and love her work so when I saw this new adult rom-com from her, I had to request it, and I’m so glad I did because I was not disappointed.

+~ Clover has come up with a plan to afford going to Wexley University and having on campus housing – getting married. And there is one other person she knows who goes to Wexley – her ex-childhood friend, Bennett Graves. Bennett is gorgeous, rich and once upon a time her best friend until they grew apart. This story is told in 2 POVs though, so we get Bennet’s POV too and that boy is crazy about Clover, which I adored because it’s his POV where we get the yearning. Their romance was so good, and the spice too even though I thought getting married at 19 and 20 is too young, I couldn’t help love watching the two of them experience college and a marriage of convenience. I like how they had a talk about it when their contract of marriage was nearing it’s deadline though. Also, side note about Clover, love that she is a plus-sized girly!

+ This is set in college and I think it captures dorm life pretty well with the strange and unique people you meet – where some will turn out to be some of your closest friends! Also there is a bunch of partying that happens in this story too which also is realistic – even Clover working at the library (I did that too! lol) is just spot on, at least for me. We don’t see Clover in classes much except for pottery class though.

+~ I loved the secondary characters in this book, they were fun and funny. Even jerks like Tate was important to the story because yes those guys exist on campus too. And though the romance is the main focus, there are moments where Bennett is trying to navigate his relationship with his mom – he wants more from her. I would have loved to see if his mom and Clover’s could come back to being friends again. The story explores power dynamics too and the role of money and how it can change in relationships.

+~ I mean sure, Clover could have gotten the money for housing a bunch of different ways. She didn’t have to manipulate Bennett into doing it, but after learning about what happened between them in the past, I think it was a good deal! And it ended up really working out between them.

Final Thoughts:

I ate this up and read it in one day. I loved this book even though the marriage of convenience is happening between a 19 and 20 year old, which personally I think is too young (but that’s just me) – but I love that they are ex-childhood friends who turn into lovers. Bennett’s yearning for her warmed my heart and the story is just fun and reminded me of my college days! I’m looking forward to reading Daisy’s story next!

+ I really enjoyed this audiobook because of the narrator’s voice – I love the warmth in it and she did such a good job with all the characters she had to voice. Though I started off reading this ebook, the audiobook really kept me invested because of the narrator.

+ Siying is a corpse driver – a priestess who guides the dead to their resting place, and she can revive the dead, she’s a necromancer. She’s following in her beloved dad’s footsteps – and now that he’s older and sick she takes on more jobs so that she can help raise money to take him to a healer. She takes a job reviving a corpse not knowing that he is the second prince – but now that he’s sort of awake, she has to gather more qi to keep him alive or else he will die again. This quest for qi takes them through some haunted places which I really enjoyed! I loved the paranormal elements and the dangerous spirits they encounter.

+ I love the family elements. Siying loves her father dearly and will do anything to help him get better. But in the end, she has to accept she’s done everything can and let him go. Ren also deals with some family issues. Ren doesn’t want the crown – throughout their journey they encounter angry people and their stories of exploitation carried out by the kingdom. There is threat of a war coming so Ren doesn’t want to deal with that until he is forced to face the truth of things about his older brother, the heir.

+ The romance is slow burn and so sweet! It’s a dislike to like kind of romance, at least on Siying’s part. I love how Ren is playful and Siying is always scolding him. She’s grumpy and he’s the sunshing – they are opposites but very cute together.

~ Grief and anger really takes over Siying at the end with so many things happening at once – and I was surprised with her feelings of vengeance and rage. I know she was in a hurt place inside, but she really wanted to take someone out and it felt a little out of character. Would have loved more moments between her and her father also.

Final Thoughts:

I enjoyed the audiobook version of this book! Siying and Ren’s journey through haunted woods, a mansion and a haunted town really kept things interesting. I enjoyed the slow burn between Siying who’s the grumpy FMC and Ren who is a golden-retriever who doesn’t want the responsibilities of being a prince. We get to learn both characters and their motivations through their adventures and I also really loved the family element though I wish there were more scenes between Siying and her dad. The romance is slow burn and sweet. Overall, I think this is a good debut.

World Building: I read Lightlark by this author and never continued the series because I just couldn’t get into it. I don’t think the writing worked for me. I did read her contemporary romance and enjoyed it so I decided to try Starside because it’s an adult romantasy. The world building is very lush in this series – there are two sides Stormside (no magic and mortals) and Starside (immortals and magic, species, creatures, and monsters). Aris joins the Questral, first there are some deadly trials in Stormside, but if you pass that then you embark on a very deadly quest in Starside. I really loved how lush Starside is with different landscapes, horrors, and magical creatures. Also there is a big deal about swords in this story – there are different types of swords, and the sword can make or break your quest.

Characters: Aris is determined to complete the Questral and killed the Gods. But first she has to not die. And though she’s had some training, she knows she has a challenge when the other challengers are killers or from wealthy houses with lots of resources. I liked Aris’ determination not to give up, because there were many times she could have. And though she is willing to die for her revenge, she was still able to see beauty around her in Starside. There were times I thought she was so uninformed and naive but this story shows her growth, which I really enjoyed. Even with Harlan Raker, enemy and the king’s guard, always telling her she isn’t good enough. Now Harlan was interesting with his mask, hood and armor, grumpy attitude and killing skills that no one can match. There were some secondary characters along the journey but I was bummed the first two Aris meet in the beginning basically disappears throughout most of the book – I was hoping for some found family with them.

Romance: For 70% of the story I thought the romance read like a young adult novel. There was barely any steam, it’s a SLOW burn. Aris and Harlan hate one another – hate. But Aris wouldn’t have survived Starside without him, and he likes to remind her of that. He was not a nice guy, maybe to prove a point to her that being nice gets you killed but I can see why she hated him. So that’s why it was very surprising at what happens in the 90% mark of the book…yes, you have to wait until the end if you want some chili pepper spice. 😅. I was like whoa….that was unexpected! I was just hoping for a kiss but they are kind of unleashed at the end. But it’s an enemies to lovers to enemies kind of situation.

Story: The story is about a deadly quest and revenge but while in Starside, Aris learns a lot about the immortals and how they feel about the Gods. The pace is fast with fight after fight – it’s almost never ending with just a few breaks here and there. There is a lot of action and at times I wish there was more dialogue between Aris and Harlan but he’s a quiet one. A lot that goes on in this story. There are some plot twists at the end, one that I guessed, that make me very eager for book two. But I still feel like the writing felt like young adult, despite the profanity the characters used and the very vigorous spicy scene, but that just be a me problem not totally gelling with her writing style.

Vibes: it’s giving, Hunger Games but fantasy and lots of swords…and I’ve been kind of over deadly trials and quest not being dangerous enough in other stories but this one had so much danger and non-stop action, that I wanted to keep reading.

Final Thoughts:

This story is full of action, swords, monsters, creatures, immortals and a young woman who is determine to kill the Gods. I liked seeing Aris pick herself back up even when she was scared to go on, or finding beauty in the darkness. I enjoyed the enemies to lovers, even though it’s a very slow burn – romance. I liked this way better than Lightlark and I will definitely be continuing this series after that cliffhanger ending.

World Building: I haven’t read a pirate novel in awhile and I picked this up in Kindle Unlimited because of the title and the book cover. Anne was, as princesses go, pretty privileged – to the point her dad let her pick her own groom if she could defeat his soldiers in a tournament. She picks her groom but gets a harsh lesson in love when she realizes she’s made the wrong move. Left for dead, she finds herself on a ship with other prisoners and from there she learns to rule the high seas and make a name for herself as Blackbeard. I loved the pirate adventures and fights that are featured in this story. Anne and her crew travel all over to hunt down her attackers and free people who are enslaved. Would have love to see them rescuing people though since that’s what their mission was all about. Also, Anne’s dad, the king, was a horrible man, but we only get information about that from people he had wronged. I kind of wish this was a duology so we could get more world building.

Characters: Anne isn’t the most likable character but I liked her. She goes through something very traumatic so her fears and anger are ruling her decisions – she is female rage on borrowed time. So I understood her tunnel vision mission of finding her attackers and picking them off one by one. I also didn’t like some of her decisions because of what that fear and rage is doing to her, but it’s part of her growth. I was all in on her revenge tour after what happened to her. I love her crew members full of misfits and different species! Every one had their own issues to deal with, and I didn’t blame Prudence for doing what she did – but it broke my heart. But together, they were all so funny and I was glad Anne had them.

Romance: After what happened to Anne in the beginning of the book I was hoping this would be a slow burn and it was! She’s had trauma and when Robb comes along, he has to learn to be more gentle with her. It is enemies to lovers though, since Robb is hunting Blackbeard. But right away I could tell he was good for her because of his patience. I enjoyed the spice because he was patient with her. He’s kind of a softie when it comes to her. She seems to be the more domineering one in the relationship which I thought was cute. There are some secrets between them though but I was rooting for them!

Story: This is a dark fantasy with many triggering scenes. So definitely check the triggers. I loved how this was a story of Anne’s survival – she had to become someone else, Blackbeard, to help herself feel strong again. But she also had to learn how to be strong again with help and not always pushing people away to be alone. I didn’t mind her hunting her attackers one by one and torturing some of them, I was angry with her. I love how Blackbeard is retold as a woman, and I really did enjoy her crew of pirates.

There were some parts of the writing where I had to read again because a character, will kind of be forgotten. There were a few chapters where one of my favorite secondary characters wasn’t mentioned anymore and I even stopped and wondered where she was. Then she’d reappear again in other chapters.

Outside all the dark themes of this book, I thought the pirate themes of the book was really fun – especially Anne and her crew. I love them! But as I said, this is a dark book with horrible things that happen to Anne and to the people that wronged her. She’s a person bent on revenge but it consumes her so much that she doesn’t appreciate or know how to be friends with the people that have her back until it’s too late. I enjoyed the romance also but would have loved if this was a duology so we could have had more world-buidling. Other than that though, I enjoyed this retelling of Blackbeard which is full of pirates, some romance and lots of revenge.

+ Ann Liang does young adult rivals to lovers romance so well! This is the second book I’ve read where she uses this trope and I just love it especially when it is set at a wealthy private school. The narrator for this audiobook is becoming one of my favorite voices in the audiobook world, she does a fantastic job voicing the characters in this story.

+ Alice is one of the top people in her class, but she’s poor compared to the other students at her school. All she wants is to be rich like them one day but first she has to figure out how to come up with the tuition money if she wants to stay there. One day she realizes she can be invisible – not sure how or why (kind of wanted a reason for it) – but instead of really freaking out about it, she turns it into a business venture that could help her pay her tuition. She gets Henry Lee, one of the hottest and richest guys at school, and her biggest rival, to create the app where her business can thrive.

+ The romance is so cute. Alice and Henry are always in competition and Henry seems to like her but Alice is so focused on everything else, that she doesn’t really see it until later. They spend more time together now that she has this business using her invisibility and the closer they get, Alice realizes she might feel more about Henry than she is letting on. It’s a slow burn but it gave me all the feels when they finally get together.

+ I like Alice, even though she let her fears and ambition guide her and she makes some big mistakes, I understood her predicament and desires. All she wants is to make her parents proud and one day be wealthy enough to take care of them and I think many kids who are not from wealthy families feel that burden – especially if you are Asian. I love that she turned something that is scary into a business! This business also made her befriend some people at school that she never thought she could be friends with like Chanel.

Final Thoughts:

I kind of need someone at Netflix to make these Ann Liang rival to lovers romance novels into tv shows. I would be obsessed. This book had drama, action, friendship, and romance that melted my heart. I can’t wait to read more from this author!

+~ Shadow Trials is book one in a fantasy series that follows a human, Fiona, and her quest to complete deadly trials in order to become the Champion of Nixthos – who is the God of Darkness and Secrets. The world building is heavy, there are many gods, many champions of the gods, different species, different lands, prophecy, lore, dragons and it is a lot to process, which makes the beginning slow going because of all the information and names to know. But I settled into the story after 20% into the book and then I was addicted to the story. There are some dark themes in this book, especially with Fiona and Azric’s pasts. Also mentions of how some species are created is pretty gruesome.

+ There is a huge cast but our main characters are Fiona (the human with a Priest for a father) and Azric, the Prince of Bones. We get her POV for 90% of the book and then Azric for 10% at the end. I really like Fiona because she’s human and knows her limitations but she’s so brave because she wants purpose in her life even if it means her death. She questions everything, even her choices, but I like that she never takes anything at face value. Azric, is a complicated man, he is Fae, he is blessed by the Gods, but he is broken. Learning more about what happens to him is dark, but my heart broke for him because he had a good childhood, he had a good life until the god he is promised to comes calling. Then there are secondary characters that are very interesting, like Fiona’s father, Azric’s parents, the Fae like Darian, and so many more.

+~ There is romance but it is a very slow burn, barely there spice, though there is a some steam. I love that it is a slow burn because there are so many things happening in this story. It feels like the deadly trials were the most important thing in this story and it was appropriate that the romance take a back seat. I liked seeing Fiona and Azric get to know each other instead, especially with what happened to Azric in the past. I think a slow burn is good for them.

+~ It took me two days to read this book because I was so invested in Fiona’s story. I actually love the length of this book, it wasn’t too long and not too short. But because the world-building is dense, I felt like I missed a prequel or something. Sure enough I checked on Goodreads and I missed a whole series before this book – which now makes total sense why I felt the way I did. I think I got through this book pretty good though without even reading the previous series, but when I have time, I will pick it up because I’m sure it will explain so many things.

+~ The pacing was a little up and down, definitely slow in the beginning, but it was steady throughout, which I appreciated – personally I like a little more romance in my romantasy so I might have been searching it out and got impatient when I realized how slow of a burn this story is. But I love the build up to the ending, and I’m looking forward to book two!

Final Thoughts:

There is a series before this one I think you should read called Shadowed Debts, and I didn’t know it existed until I finished Shadow Trials. But I think if you read Shadowed Debts you will not feel like you are thrown into the world, like how I felt while reading this book. It’s not a bad thing, but it made me feel like I was missing a big chunk of history, despite that I still found this story addictive. Fiona’s character is new to this world also, so through her, I learn some of what took place before Shadow Trials. I love the world-building, but it is heavy. I love the slow burn romance and am invested in Fiona and Azric’s story, I’m totally rooting for them. I’m going to read the previous series while waiting on book two!

+ I like how Nadi and Raziel are always circling around each other, pushing, pulling, not sure what to make of what they are together. Because Nadi has had many changes to kill Raziel, and vice versa but here they are, not dead, but still with one another, not wanting to admit that maybe their relationship has changed into something different. They can’t put the words to it yet and I’m glad because as much as I want them to fall for one another, I didn’t want it to happen quickly because he killed her family. She has to work through some of those complicated feelings of hate turning into love.

+ We learn more about Raziel in book two! He’s just a morally black sadistic killer in book one, but in this book we know more about what he endured when he was growing up, how his family treated and how the things he loves gets taken away from him. I warmed up to him and realize he is a broken vampire with lots of issues and I can see why he hates his family. I like seeing him vulnerable but I also don’t want to see him lose his killer edge – and can’t wait to see what happens in book three.

+ I like that the spice is creative! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 And it meets my expectations of how I assume Raziel would be in bed, so I’m glad he lives up to it. I love how as their relationship changes it shows in the spice also, sometimes dominating, sometimes soft, sometimes desperate. And speaking of their relationship, what a journey it goes through in this story! There are so many trust issues but that ending…I think that ending says it all about what they mean to one another and I love it. I am rooting for them.

~ This is a short book at barely over 300 pages which I love but I also wish it was 350 pages. Here I am complaining about books being too long these days and now I want this one to be longer! 😅. Again, it is light on the world-building but we did get a little more here because we are introduced to another vampire family, and we learn more about Raziel’s family. There are games afoot, and everyone is trying to entice Nadi to be on their side and she has to try and play it right. Though there is family political intrigue between the siblings, it’s never anything heavy – this is a light fantasy read, mostly all vibes, so it’s not like the cat and mouse game between any of them is super intense with surprising plot twists. At times I don’t even feel like Raziel and Nadi is staying ahead of anyone – they keep getting trapped, maybe because of their feelings for one another being their weakness? I’m not sure. Even the violence I feel could be more intense but it isn’t. But I don’t mind because this is one of those addictive reads that you can consume really quick.

Final Thoughts:

This one lived up to my expectations because I like seeing how Nadi and Raziel’s complicated relationship unfolds. I love them together and their spice is just right as much as their questions about what they feel for one another. They are becoming Bonnie and Clyde and I love it. I’m glad we learn about Raziel and his family. And that cliffhanger ending makes me eager for book three right away – I’m glad I don’t have to wait long because it comes out in July! This is an addictive series, light on the world building and easy to consume, I’m really enjoying it so far.

+ Set in an alternate Earth, Harker Academy is a place for demon hunters to learn and train to hone their skills. Viv trained since she was a child with her father, who was a hunter – but he never told her about this school. So when Viv gets an invitation to attend, she goes for the sole purpose of finding out more about her father. Being at Harker Academy open Viv to a whole new world and some secrets revealed leads to betrayal. I loved all the paranormal elements and the fights with different species and monsters. I also was invested in the mystery aspect of the story.

+ I like Viv but she definitely has her stubborn moments. She’s dealing with grief and guilt, but she also is the black sheep in the family. Her mom is running for mayor and it’s all about being proper and keeping up with appearances in her family but Viv is a hunter. And aeon hunter at that so the desire to hunt and kill is strong in her blood, not politics. At first she is someone who doesn’t want to get close to people, she has a best friend she loves dearly in the mortal plane, but at Harker she meets hunters like her and I loved how she grows. She is at times impulsively because of her aeon blood that is hyper-focused on stalking her prey, but she learns the longer she’s at Harker that maybe getting help is a good thing.

+ I loved the secondary characters like Sophia (her roommate), and her other new friends Peter and Eliot. I thought there was a good balance of academia and action in the book. I liked both the scenes of Viv learning in her classes and also being out in the streets hunting.

+ The romance is a slow burn between student and teacher but I really liked how it progressed. Reid is a demon but allowed to teach at Harker, even though he is the enemy. But throughout the story we get to know a little more about him each time and I love how eventually their attraction grows and they learn they work better together than separate – since Viv is stubborn enough to not listen to him. And the spice between them was nice!

~ There is a very abrupt cliffhanger ending! I’m so happy book two comes out this year as well.

~ Viv is leading a double life, she spends all her time at Harker, which is on another plane, and she’s lying to her family and best friend of where she is living. But I didn’t know how she could pull off not showing up to work for 3 weeks – it works out too conveniently for her.
