First Lines Fridays | 12/9/21

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

“Once upon a time, on the coldest night of midwinter, in the darkest heart of the forest, Death and Fortune came to a crossroads.”

Can you guess what book it is?

Did you guess it? I just started this one and already I’m loving it. Have you read this one?

Did you guess it? This one was the summer read of 2021 I think and I’m only reading it now. So far so good! Have you read this one?

How is your week going? Are you ready for Halloween? Do you dress up at all or do you not celebrate it? This year we are going trick or treating and passing out candy. I hope all of you that do celebrate it have a safe Halloween!

“She was born breech, in the deep of the night. The midwife, Martha, had to seize her by the ankles and drag her from the womb. She slipped out easy, dropped limp into Martha’s arms, and lay still as stone.”

Can you guess what book it is?

Did you guess right? And I don’t know why I picked books with births in their first paragraphs for the past two weeks! LOL that is totally coincidental! 🤦🏻‍♀️ I just read this one and it’s dark and witchy! Have you read it?

I haven’t done one of these in a YEAR!! But I need something to post on Fridays since sometimes I have no book reviews ready – so let’s get back into it. Here is what First Lines Fridays is about:

“Far below the darkest waters, in a cell made of bones, a creature was born. She was the only one of her kind to have entered the realm in such a way: on the cold, bloody stones of Saddoriel’s prison.”

Can you guess what book it is?

“Even though my throat was as dry as the stone walls of the castle, a silvery ray of hope kept me anchored in the center of the crowded dining hall. Courtiers pressed in all around me, a sea of golden hair and sharp smiles. But not one of them was my brother. And not one of them was his best friend.”

I actually won this book in a giveaway! I hardly win anything so it’s always exciting when I do. Have you read this book? Did you guess right?

“It was the feverish gossip of the palace maids that got Aidan’s attention. He was bent over the rubbish bin, just outside the kitchen. Straightening up, he flicked a vegetable peel from the collar of his uniform and stood in the back doorway, concentrating on the girls’ whispers.”

And the book is…

Yes…the cover was what made me buy this book haha. It was on sale on Book Outlet and I just loved it. We shall see if I enjoy it! Have you heard of this book?

🌺ALOHA🌺

Hi everyone, I hope you had a nice week! It was a week full of ups and downs for me – I blame that on grief, hormones and the full moon. Let’s say it was a hard week for me to get motivated but I managed to get some things done. I read a lot of Kindle Unlimited books from indie authors – I like how quick they are to read at times. I just lose myself and that’s what I needed this week. I’ve also been working on crafting things for my Etsy shop. And then there is the homeschooling – which has been really lax of late because I was not meant to be a teacher. 😅 My son has 3 more weeks of “school” left. I will say my daughter loves having her brother home with her. 💕

So with that little update…let’s get to the lines!

“Later, he would be known as the First Protector, and under his vision the city would transform. Serfs would be freed, schools would be built, and dragons would, for the first time, be ridden by commoners,”

Hello wonderful people! It’s Friday, our first week of December is almost over and wow, it’s 19 days until Christmas! Woohoo! It’s very exciting!

I went to the library this week and broke my borrowing ban. Oh well! I couldn’t resist haha. So I’m going to choose the first line from one of those books. Ready?

“Be still, Little Priestess.”

Did you get guess it? I love this cover! And I can’t wait to read this. Have you read this book yet? What did you think of it?

Quick Friday Update:

It’s BLACK Friday, for those of you doing some major Christmas shopping. I usually avoid it, I could do it when I was younger and single haha, but now with kids, nah…

But I do have one Black Friday event I want to attend. My cousin makes earrings and she’s selling her items at an event in town and I want to support her and buy earrings for gifts and honestly…for ME. We shall see if I have time to make it out there today.

Okay, let’s get to the lines!

“You’d think someone who wanted to study the stars would know better than to wish on them.”

My Little Friday Update First:

I can’t believe we are almost done with November! I’m so ready to decorate my house for Christmas and yes this year I will be doing it before Thanksgiving because Thanksgiving comes late in the month this year. Once I’m done dog-sitting Maya, the rambunctious husky 😅, I’ll be able to put up ornaments. If I did it now, I’m pretty sure Maya would pull the round ornament off the tree. This dog loves ball toys. She is OBSESSED with them. She even whines/sings when she hears them squeak. It cracks me up.

So here we go with the lines – –

“On a drowsy Sunday afternoon, a man in a long dark coat hesitated in front of a house on a tree-lined street.”

Yes, I’m doing a reread of The Cruel Prince and mind you I’ve read this book a few times already when it first published, then before Wicked King was published and finally, finally we will get The Queen of Nothing on Tuesday! Actually I may have to wait a bit longer for my items to ship. I bought the box set and also I think I got the special box from OwlCrate, I forget. 🤦🏻‍♀️ But I’m so ready to read the final book of this series!
