Top 5 Saturday: Creepy Books

Happy Saturday everyone!

I wanted to try a new weekly prompt for my blog and I’ve seen this one from a few blogger friends so let’s give it a try!

This prompt is hosted byMandy at Devouring Books so check out her blog for bookish content. 😊

Rules!

  • Share your top 5 books of the current topic– these can be books that you want to read, have read and loved, have read and hated, you can do it any way you want.
  • Tag the original post (This one!)
  • Tag 5 people

This is a big trigger book because of the cutting but this story creeped me out. 😖 It’s a murder mystery in a small town with a reporter who has messed up memories about the town, her family is something else 😳 – and the murderer pulls teeth. AHHH! I just can’t. Lol…creepy.

Edgar Allan Poe re-imagined. A few of the stories in this anthology creeped me out so good! I mean being buried alive is creepy. 😧

This book was something! I reviewed it as an arc but I can still remember how on edge I was reading this book. Sending girls out to an encampment to get their “wildness” out before getting married…and the girls turn on each other and there are poachers on the outskirts waiting…yeah, I don’t think I’ll ever forget this book. HAHA.

I haven’t read this yet but it’s on my shelf. The cover alone looks creepy. My son picked it out for me when we were shopping at Target. He said the trees branches looked cool. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I read this a long time ago in high school, so late 90’s? It’s a collection of novellas and the one story that creeped me out was the one called The Langoliers. There are people on a plane, a few wake up and the rest stay sleeping. I don’t remember much of what happens but just the whole idea of waking up on a plane with everyone asleep including the pilot and couldn’t wake up was creepy to me. There is a lot of Stephen King book that scared me as a teenager

And that’s what I got! Have you read any of these? Leave me a comment below!

The Sunshine Blogger Award #3

Thank you to Emer at A Little Haze Book Blog for tagging me for this award! It’s my third one and since I just finished #2, I might as well post #3 right away before I forget and procrastinate on it again. 😂 I am in a fog of sinus pressure so please excuse me! Emer has been so awesome at supporting my blog and she’s so friendly and welcoming, please check out her awesome website!

What is the Sunshine Blogger Award?

The Sunshine Blogger Award is given to those who are creative, positive and inspiring while spreading sunshine to the blogging community.

How does it work?

  • Thank the blogger(s) who nominated you in a blog post and link back to their blog.
  • Answer the 11 questions sent by the person who nominated you.
  • Nominate 11 new blogs to receive the award and write them 11 new questions.
  • List the rules and display the Sunshine Blogger Award logo in your post and/or on your blog.

Emer’s Questions:

Do you own more than one copy of any book? If yes then what book/s?

Yes, Pride and Prejudice because you know…I need all versions. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Nah, I only have 2 copies of it, one I bought for myself and the other because my hubby had the foresight (finally) to grab all the Jane Austen books the library at his workplace were giving away for free.

Describe your perfect day.

It would start off with 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, then a large cookies n creme ice blended coffee drink from Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, half caff/no whip. Then my kids and I would have a fabulous day, and no one would be sick, I would have no sinus headache or allergies, etc…LOL…and I’d have a chance to finish a book in peace while they played together.

What attracts you to a book? The cover? Blurb? Recommendation from others?

I admit, I judge a book by it’s cover…mostly. LOL

You are having a dinner party and can invite three famous people (either living or dead) to the party. Who do you invite?

Prince, Michelle Obama and Lizzo 🤷🏻‍♀️ my brain is mush, and that’s a really random dinner party guest list 😂 but sounds like a fun party right?!

Who is your favourite superhero?

Batman because at least in the Lego show versions he’s so sarcastic, which is quite funny to me.

Which would you prefer to win: an Oscar or a Grammy?

An Oscar maybe? I can’t act to save my life, but maybe like an Oscar for like costume design sounds cool! And no I can’t design costumes either.

What is the first book that you ever wrote a review for?

The Hidden Witch by Chandelle LaVaun

Coca Cola or Pepsi?

I was a Coca Cola addict for a long time! I’ve been off it for about 6 years now!!

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

Ugh…BOTH. But mostly early bird if I can help it, because my kids don’t know how to sleep in. 🤦🏻‍♀️ So they wake me up early.

What is your all time favourite quote from a book you loved?

Hard one that I can’t answer at the moment. 🧐

What’s the last book you bought (eBook, audiobook or physical book)?

And those are my answers – so here are my questions:

  1. What made you start blogging?
  2. How did you come up with the name for your blog?
  3. Name three of your favorite 2019 books so far?
  4. Name a booktuber that you follow?
  5. Do you write blog posts in advance or do you them on the day you want to post something?
  6. What’s the weirdest thing you have ever used as a bookmark?
  7. What’s your favorite bookish item? (page flags, bookmark, book sleeve, etc…?)
  8. What is your most anticipated book for the rest of 2019?
  9. What is your most anticipated book for 2020?
  10. How many books for you usually read in one week?
  11. Are you the type to read one book at a time or multiple books going on at a time?

I am tagging (and as always you are not obligated to do this at all!):

Blogtober Challenge | October 11, 2019 {Witchy YA}

This Blogtober challenge is created by The Library Looter and Anniek’s Library – check out their awesome blog sites to find more Blogtober challenge prompts!

Today’s blogtober challenge post is Witchy YA reads so here are some witchy stories!

I just read this eARC called An Unholy Magick by Kali Rose Schmidt. It releases on October 22, 2019 and it has a witch assassin! Yup, you heard right.

Book blurb from Goodreads:

She’s an assassin with a gift her parents died for.
He’s a reluctant prince content to drink himself into oblivion.
And hiding in plain sight amongst them both, a monster is searching for redemption.

In a kingdom where magick is forbidden and spoken of only in whispers, they must each face their own demons, walking the line between loyalty and betrayal.

Enter a dark new world full of forbidden love, painful loss, and a growing war between those with power and those who crave it. An Unholy Magick is a bloody and spell-binding fantasy debut, the first from Kali Rose Schmidt’s shadowy series, Vile Sacraments.

I just started this eARC and it’s quite witchy already! Looking forward to finish this one.

Book Blurb from Goodreads:

A breakup and a car accident are no way to start your seventeenth birthday.

For Theo Montgomery, that is exactly how it began. Her bad luck turns worse when she returns home from a school dance to find her house on fire–with her parents still inside. Following their deaths, Theo is sent to live with her estranged aunt in Salem, Massachusetts. If a new home and a new school aren’t enough to deal with, Theo discovers her aunt has a secret: she is a witch. And so is Theo.

Theo must learn to keep her magic in check, lest the village’s notorious witch hunters discover that magic has returned to the world after more than three hundred years. But how can she navigate a new school, new magical powers, and avoid the witch hunters, when she finds herself enjoying the company of one?

Trystan de Lancre is a dangerous witch hunter, but that doesn’t keep Theo from wanting to discover more about him. Harboring secrets of his own, Trystan isn’t the only perilous force in Salem. Something has returned to the village; something the witches believed to have been dead and buried long ago.

Salem’s dark past rises to haunt Theo and the present-day witches, unraveling a shocking revelation: the real cause of the Salem Witch Trials.

I read this a month or so ago and it’s a fun, mystery witchy read! Check out my review HERE.

Book Blurb on Goodreads:

Hannah’s a witch, but not the kind you’re thinking of. She’s the real deal, an Elemental with the power to control fire, earth, water, and air. But even though she lives in Salem, Massachusetts, her magic is a secret she has to keep to herself. If she’s ever caught using it in front of a Reg (read: non-witch), she could lose it. For good. So, Hannah spends most of her time avoiding her ex-girlfriend (and fellow Elemental Witch) Veronica, hanging out with her best friend, and working at the Fly by Night Cauldron selling candles and crystals to tourists, goths, and local Wiccans.

But dealing with her ex is the least of Hannah’s concerns when a terrifying blood ritual interrupts the end-of-school-year bonfire. Evidence of dark magic begins to appear all over Salem, and Hannah’s sure it’s the work of a deadly Blood Witch. The issue is, her coven is less than convinced, forcing Hannah to team up with the last person she wants to see: Veronica.

While the pair attempt to smoke out the Blood Witch at a house party, Hannah meets Morgan, a cute new ballerina in town. But trying to date amid a supernatural crisis is easier said than done, and Hannah will have to test the limits of her power if she’s going to save her coven and get the girl, especially when the attacks on Salem’s witches become deadlier by the day.

A witchy graphic novel! This is another fun read, check out my review HERE.

Book Blurb on Goodreads:

A story of love and demons, family and witchcraft.

Nova Huang knows more about magic than your average teen witch. She works at her grandmothers’ bookshop, where she helps them loan out spell books and investigate any supernatural occurrences in their New England town.

One fateful night, she follows reports of a white wolf into the woods, and she comes across the unexpected: her childhood crush, Tam Lang, battling a horse demon in the woods. As a werewolf, Tam has been wandering from place to place for years, unable to call any town home.

Pursued by dark forces eager to claim the magic of wolves and out of options, Tam turns to Nova for help. Their latent feelings are rekindled against the backdrop of witchcraft, untested magic, occult rituals, and family ties both new and old in this enchanting tale of self-discovery.

And lastly is The Wicked Deep, I mean look at that cover, is that not witchy or what? Click HERE for my review!

Book Blurb from Goodreads:

Welcome to the cursed town of Sparrow…

Where, two centuries ago, three sisters were sentenced to death for witchery. Stones were tied to their ankles and they were drowned in the deep waters surrounding the town.

Now, for a brief time each summer, the sisters return, stealing the bodies of three weak-hearted girls so that they may seek their revenge, luring boys into the harbor and pulling them under.

Like many locals, seventeen-year-old Penny Talbot has accepted the fate of the town. But this year, on the eve of the sisters’ return, a boy named Bo Carter arrives; unaware of the danger he has just stumbled into.

Mistrust and lies spread quickly through the salty, rain-soaked streets. The townspeople turn against one another. Penny and Bo suspect each other of hiding secrets. And death comes swiftly to those who cannot resist the call of the sisters.

But only Penny sees what others cannot. And she will be forced to choose: save Bo, or save herself.

Blogtober Challenge | October 8 {Five Perfect Autumn Reads}

This Blogtober challenge is created by The Library Looter and Anniek’s Library – check out their awesome blog sites to find more Blogtober challenge prompts!

Oh the thing I wish we had in Hawaii is a true Autumn with leaves turning and temperatures dropping…but we don’t. It will stay hot out here until about late December, early January and the lowest it will get is in the low 70’s. But reading helps me get into an autumn mood and all things pumpkin spice haha.

So here are my picks for 5 Perfect Autumn Reads:

It’s so good and so witchy and perfect to get you in the mood for Halloween!

Book Blurb from Goodreads:

Bound as one to love, honor, or burn.

Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned.

Sworn to the Church as a Chasseur, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. His path was never meant to cross with Lou’s, but a wicked stunt forces them into an impossible union—holy matrimony.

The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou’s most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. Unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, a choice must be made.

And love makes fools of us all.

I haven’t read this one yet but look at that cover! I have this on my October TBR.

Book Blurb from Goodreads:

Seventeen-year-old Aderyn (“Ryn”) only cares about two things: her family, and her family’s graveyard. And right now, both are in dire straits. Since the death of their parents, Ryn and her siblings have been scraping together a meager existence as gravediggers in the remote village of Colbren, which sits at the foot of a harsh and deadly mountain range that was once home to the fae. The problem with being a gravedigger in Colbren, though, is that the dead don’t always stay dead.

The risen corpses are known as “bone houses,” and legend says that they’re the result of a decades-old curse. When Ellis, an apprentice mapmaker with a mysterious past, arrives in town, the bone houses attack with new ferocity. What is it that draws them near? And more importantly, how can they be stopped for good?

Together, Ellis and Ryn embark on a journey that will take them deep into the heart of the mountains, where they will have to face both the curse and the long-hidden truths about themselves.

Another title I haven’t read yet but it’s called Pumpkin Heads! I mean…enough said. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Book Blurb from Goodreads:

Deja and Josiah are seasonal best friends.

Every autumn, all through high school, they’ve worked together at the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world. (Not many people know that the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world is in Omaha, Nebraska, but it definitely is.) They say good-bye every Halloween, and they’re reunited every September 1.

But this Halloween is different—Josiah and Deja are finally seniors, and this is their last season at the pumpkin patch. Their last shift together. Their last good-bye.

Josiah’s ready to spend the whole night feeling melancholy about it. Deja isn’t ready to let him. She’s got a plan: What if—instead of moping and the usual slinging lima beans down at the Succotash Hut—they went out with a bang? They could see all the sights! Taste all the snacks! And Josiah could finally talk to that cute girl he’s been mooning over for three years . . .

What if their last shift was an adventure?

Because it’s a vampire book and look at that dark, beautiful cover! Still waiting on my copy from the YA Book of the Month. 😕

Book Blurb on Goodreads:

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she’s forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city’s glitzy underworld, known as La Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group’s leader, the enigmatic Sébastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of La Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sébastien’s guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

Another one on my TBR! Look at that cover – I love it and it sounds perfect for this season.

Book Blurb on Goodreads:

Once a year, the path appears in the forest and Lucy Gallows beckons. Who is brave enough to find her–and who won’t make it out of the woods?

It’s been exactly one year since Sara’s sister, Becca, disappeared, and high school life has far from settled back to normal. With her sister gone, Sara doesn’t know whether her former friends no longer like her…or are scared of her, and the days of eating alone at lunch have started to blend together. When a mysterious text message invites Sara and her estranged friends to “play the game” and find local ghost legend Lucy Gallows, Sara is sure this is the only way to find Becca–before she’s lost forever. And even though she’s hardly spoken with them for a year, Sara finds herself deep in the darkness of the forest, her friends–and their cameras–following her down the path. Together, they will have to draw on all of their strengths to survive. The road is rarely forgiving, and no one will be the same on the other side.

And there you have my 5 picks! What are some autumn reads you’d like to recommend? Leave me a comment below and Happy Reading!

Unboxing | LitJoy Crate | September Box 2019

Hello fellow book lovers and bloggers, here we have another unboxing, but this time it’s for the LitJoy Crate September box. Let’s see what goodies were inside my box!

My daughter calls my book boxes the “treasure box”. She loves unboxing it with me and yes she plays with the box and shredded paper in it afterwards. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But look at this box! The theme is called Haunted Manor and I’m loving the purple color scheme. Very Halloween, don’t you think? I know most people do the orange and black for Halloween but I love the purple decorations too!

I love when my box has wearable items like these scrunches! Super cute!

This scarf is my favorite item in the box – look at that ombre purple color and the print! It celebrates the 50th anniversary of Disney’s Haunted Mansion ride! I’m definitely keeping this one for myself, even though it’s blazing hot in Hawaii during Halloween. 😂 Maybe one day when I make my way over to Disneyland for October I can wear it there!

Here we have the smaller items in the box: a ghostbusters patch, a Nightmare Before Christmas bookmark with Zero on the back of it (@brianamoraart), two collector’s cards (artwork by Niru Sky @niru.sky) and the cutest page flag set of the Addam’s Family!

And last but not least is this gorgeous signed copy of A Treason of Thorns by Laura E. Weymouth. The card has a note from the author on the back and the inside jacket cover, like most LitJoy Crate book versions, is gorgeous. See below…

Gorgeous right? And I love these drawstring book bags LitJoy Crate puts their books in. This month it’s an aqua color but I think the first box I got from them it was blue like the LitJoy Crate box. Super useful and cute!

What do you think of this box? I thought it was a great box, and definitely love the scarf. I hope the book is good as well – review will be up for it as soon as I can get to it (life’s been crazy busy lately!). I look forward to next month’s box!

First Lines Friday (10/4/19)

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Aloha fellow readers and bloggers and everyone out there! How are YOU? I hope everyone is having an awesome October so far.

Just when I think my kids are over the illnesses they came down with in September something else happens. I guess my daughter is allergic to her antibiotic but she had a late reaction because she was at the end of her treatment and flared up yesterday in hives! Poor kiddo, but she is in a much better mood than I ever was when I had hives for week when I was around 8 or 9 years old. My doctors never figured out what triggered it either! I remember the itching drove me mad and I would cry from the welts. She’s barely bothered by it, except for the ones on her knees and elbows. Anyway I hope it’s out of her system soon because…mommy needs a break! 😩 That’s how the start of my October has been! I hope yours has been way better!

I am very excited seeing all the houses decorate for Halloween though! My son is still afraid of some of the decorations but my daughter loves all of it. Such opposites, but I hope we just all get better so we can enjoy the festivities this month. 🎃

Let’s get to the lines!

“A lace-trimmed wedding invitation sits on my nightstand and I know, beyond the shadow of the doubt, that Mama is not coming back.”

This cover is gorgeous! I got this book in my LitJoy Crate box so review will come soon to my blog.

Monthly Wrap-Up | September 2019

Hello October!

If I thought August was busy well…September was mostly about me trying to get my household over sinus issues, colds, and ear infections. Yay…not really. 😫 I managed to read a few books while my kiddos were under the weather. And it’s been HUMID, ewww, yuck, I want cooler weather and look at that, today I get that wish and now I’m dealing with more sinus issues and even vertigo. Enough of that depressing stuff, what did I read this month?

And that’s all I got. I read some really good books in September, so I’m really happy about that. If you want to check out my reviews for these books just check out my archive. Hope you had a good reading month and let’s have a great October.🎃

Book Synopsis:

‘In his pursuit of the occult, the Third Reich opened the Gate to a realm of magic and brought the world to ruin. The Gate was eventually closed, but They were already in our world and They were hungry.’

-The Lost History, Library of Avergard

Azure ‘Azzy’ Brimvine lives in a world decimated by magic, where humans have retreated underground from the overwhelming dangers of the surface. But Below is no safer than Above.

Magic borne plagues continue to eat away at the remaining human cities, a sickness that doesn’t merely kill, but creates aberrations from the stricken: people twisted by magic into something dark, dangerous, and powerful. It is an existence of fear and constant dread. When Azzy’s brother, Armin, is infected and cast out into the Above, she sets out after him, determined to be there for him no matter what he becomes.

Armin is captured and bound for the Auction block of Avergard, a ruthless city of inhuman lords and twisted creatures. To reach him, Azzy must brave the perils of the Above and the chaotic life forms created by the Gate. To reach him, she must find allies and forge new bonds in this broken world.

Top Ten Tuesday | 10/01/19

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Book Titles with Numbers In Them

(You could really challenge yourself and do numbers 1-10 or just any numbers at all. Submitted by Emma @ Words and Peace)

There have been a few books lately with numbers in them like these books featuring crowns.

Sorry…I feel like I’m cheating LOL, this whole Three Dark Crowns series by Kendare Blake all have numbers in the titles!!

Just because I’m randomly looking for titles – this one popped up. I never read it before though.

And then there is always the classic Fahrenheit 451.

And of course from one of my favorite historical romance authors we have these titles below.

It’s a pretty easy topic today and that’s what I got. What do you have?

Unboxing | OwlCrate | September 2019 Box

I received by second OwlCrate box and I love it! The theme for September is called Fear the Night which is perfect since Halloween is around the corner. So let’s look at what I got!

So many goodies!

An excerpt of The Beautiful and this card with beautiful artwork.

Coffee in the flavor of Scare-Amel Corn from Bones Coffee! It smells so good, but I may be gifting this to some coffee lovers I know. I love coffee too – but usually the icy blended kine. 😂

Fingerless gloves, SO freaking cute! A jewelry dish that says “Beware for I am Fearless & Therefore Powerful” – Mary Shelley. And a pin!

A close up of the pin and it’s amazing details. Beautiful!

I had two books in the box, yes TWO! This is a paperback of The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and it already looks scary. I mean, look at that cover…👀

And last but not least, this GORGEOUS signed copy of The Bone Houses, with a note from the author and this bookmark! This white cover is lovely but I kind of want a black copy to compare haha. I love the design of that skull so much. I can’t wait to read this book.

I think this was a pretty good box and I can gift a few things away, which is always convenient – I already have some of my Xmas shopping done because of these boxes haha. I am skipping next month’s OwlCrate because I’m not a big sci-fi fan, but I will be trying a new box hopefully.
